As of Thursday, May 9th tracking has finally ended for Godzilla Minus One. After 28 weeks in theaters, only 90 theaters are now showing it in Japan and the number is dwindling. So it's unlikely it will move the needle much now. Its legendary run has placed it as the following:
- 1st highest-grossing live-action domestic film of the Reiwa Political Era.
- 1st highest-grossing domestic live-action 2023 film in Japan.
- 1st live-action Japanese film to pass 7 Billion Yen in 5 years.
- 2nd highest-grossing/attended kaiju film in last 13 years.
- 4th highest-grossing domestic 2023 film in Japan.
- 4th live-action Japanese film to pass 6 Billion Yen in 10 years.
- 5th highest-grossing 2023 film in Japan.
- 8th most attended Godzilla movie in Japan.
- 96th highest-grossing movie in Japan.
Godzilla Minus One ends its tracking with 7.59 Billion Yen ($51.6 Million) and an attendance of 5.04 Million. Congratulations to Godzilla Minus One's team and Toho for the historic box office run. We'll update if actuals ever get released. (Eiga Ranking, Kogyotsushin)

Weekend 27 is the final weekend for tracking Godzilla Minus One. It has accumulated 7.58 Billion Yen ($51.5 Million). It has officially broken 5 million in attendance with 5.03 Million in Attendance! Only 7 other Godzilla movies have surpassed 5 million in attendance and it now joins Shin Godzilla as a recent title to achieve this benchmark! (Toho)
05/14/2024a:
In weekend 26 Godzilla Minus One finally fell out of the top 10, but it still had a solid boost from the Golden Week start which is counted as a four-day weekend. It's hit a total of 7.52 Billion Yen($51.1 Million) and an attendance of 4.99 Million. (Eiga Ranking, Toho)
Well there is no need for that because Gigan will appear in the new MonsterVerse anime: Monarch G-Team
It's set after Godzilla Aftershock, so there's no contradiction. Not yet at least.
TAKE MY FUCKING MONEY
04/25/2024:
It's weekend 25 and Godzilla Minus One is still in the Top 10! It finished at #10 this weekend. It has reached 7.46 Billion Yen ($51.06 Million). It's now the 95th highest-grossing film of all time in Japan. Attendance sits at 4.93 Million. (Toho, Kogyotsushin)
Golden Week begins next week. (A series of Japanese Holidays taking place from April 29th-May 5th.) Both Minus One and the new release Godzilla x Kong should receive a boost in numbers from the double feature they will have this coming weekend. Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color is also returning to theaters, which should increase numbers this coming week.

04/15/2024a:
Weekend 22 saw Godzilla Minus One finish #7 at the Box Office having broken the 7 Billion Yen barrier with 7.13 Billion Yen ($48.1 Million). It is now only one of four live-action Japanese movies to break the 7 Billion Yen barrier in the last 10 years. It continues to be the 8th most attended Godzilla film in the series with a massive attendance of 4.70 Million. It has now been in theaters for as long as Shin Godzilla and will continue to rack up the numbers. It will break 7.2 Billion Yen tomorrow.
04/15/2024b:
Weekend 23 of Godzilla Minus One and it's still in the top 10 at the box office. This weekend it finished at #8. It has hit 7.31 Billion Yen ($49.55 Million), making it Japan's 99th highest-grossing film of all time. (That includes foreign films released in Japan.) Its attendance has grown to a staggering 4.83 Million.
The question is whether or not it will be able to hit 5 Million before it gets released on Home Video in Japan, May 1st. What's more impressive is that the Yen's worth next to the dollar has plummeted to Heisei Godzilla era numbers and despite Japanese audiences being tight on money as a result, it has managed to be less the 1 Billion Yen away from Shin Godzilla's final gross.
Looking forward to season 2 of Monarch, but I really hope they make efforts to connect with the movies' writers before they start filming. Can't have another Stephen Randa situation happening again before it gets out of control.
Also, hopefully we get some more insight into Project Powerhouse in the spin-off shows. Lots of potential there.
Miscellaneous Notes:
1. Godzilla is a mutated member of an ancient superspecies of aquatic synapsid-like creatures that coexisted with humanity during ancient times. The average height of these creatures was around 150 feet tall. Godzilla is around 350 feet tall.
2. The Anunnaki play a background role in several movies leading up to Destroy All Monsters. APEX uses their metal to build Mechagodzilla or Alan Jonah is an android built by the aliens to use to free Ghidorah from Antarctica. The aliens also play a role in manipulating world governments into destroying Earth’s Titans.
3. The Annunaki (or the Ancient Aliens) are Sumerian-esc aliens from Planet X. They resemble Ancient Astronauts.
4. Ghidorah doesn't generate a storm around himself. Humbaba the Terrible does it instead, making him look like Alioth from Loki.
5. Three different options for the final boss are Ghidorah, Jörmungandr (the World Serpent) and Humbaba the Terrible.
6. A portal/rift to Planet X is situated in the Hollow Earth. Ghidorah came to Earth through this portal/rift.
7. Ichor’s kingdom is a massive, frozen region with fossilized Titans littering the landscape. His personal lair is located in the heart of a dormant volcano.
8. Unlike in the official MonsterVerse, Shimo is a polar bear/dragon hybrid.
9. Godzilla fights Jinshin Mushi in Axis Mundi in the finale of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
10. Buraq is a pegasus-like Titan who acts as a guardian of the Hollow Earth Iwi. She is my version of the unused monster Fosphera that was supposed to appear in TNE.
11. In GVK, there are four battles: Skull Island, Tasman Sea, and Hong Kong.
**CREDIT goes to artist Jared Modina for creating Buraq as one of his original MonsterVerse Titans.**

Wow! Shimo is huge!
1) after watching terror of mechagodzilla on youtube in 2014 when I was young I I started to watch older godzilla movies on YouTube and paying for it and I was 4
2)my all time favorite Toho movie was Shin godzilla that one is just basically my childhood and the atomic breath scene is so cool and Kamata kun gills spilling blood is disgusting but a great thriller
3)my favorite monsterverse movie has to go to Godzilla:King of the monsters it's just so good and thermonuclear godzilla looked badass also the characters were great and mothra sacrificed herself to save godzilla which shows what true love truly is
why is there a $40,000 dollar charge on my credit card bill?
My first memory was when I was very very very young. I don’t remember exactly how old I was, but I vividly remember Godzilla vs Megaguirus being my first movie I’ve seen. It was on cable, it was the scene of the Meganula hunting down those humans in the city. I somehow remember the movie being Godzilla vs Mothra, funnily enough. And that it was black and white. But both of those turned out to be really false lmao.
My favorite Toho Godzilla movie is probably Godzilla Minus One. Which admittedly is very basic, but it’s just so amazing on every level. I’m also gonna shoutout Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II as my favorite heisei movie. I love that one.
My favorite Monsterverse movie is tough because they’re all great IMO. But I‘m gonna have to go with Godzilla: King of the Monsters. It has the great sound design that I love, amazing music, great fights. Kinda has it all for a Monsterverse movie, I think.
My first introduction to Godzilla was through the 1998 Godzilla movie and i have been in love ever since
My favorite Toho Godzilla movie is Godzilla Final Wars
My favorite Monsterverse movie is Godzilla: King of the Monsters because I really fell in love with that film the first time i watched it
My first memory of Godzilla was finding a discounted triple feature of Godzilla Vs Kong Ghidorah, Godzilla and Mothra, and GMK, all at a Dollar General when I was 14. I loved those films so much, and they kick-started my adoration for Mothra and Baragon alongside Godzilla.
My favorite Toho Godzilla movie is GMK, perfect suits, wonderful characters, a great story, and amazing set pieces. I love it so much. The score is amazing too!!
My favorite Monster verse film is KOTM, just because of Mothra and Bear McCreary's amazing score!!!
I really hope to win, I've never been to a Godzilla convention, and I'd love to go someday!
maybe a giant warbat because the upper fangs
That looks neat, especially when he did it all by himself using only clay
Damnnnn that looks epic, I cant wait to watch the movieee
Will vote, after I watch the movie
Right back at ya Chris! See you changed your display name lol good to see you on here again! And yeah, for me I just recall how awe-inspiring the visual effects weee for the first Godzilla and Pacific Rim films and it really boils down to the realistic representation of these giant beings moving around. Same reason the Dinosaurs in Jurassic Park looked so much more believable than the ones in Jurassic World.
Hey Chris! Very long time no see! I actually was making my own little post about this myself since I just saw it for the second time in a row haha. I completely agree with a lot of the points you made and that second viewing really helped me make some criticisms I wasnt thinking about too much the first time.
After seeing GxK, I have to cast my vote for Ghidorah as being the victor if a battle with Shimo ever took place. Ghidorah was vastly more aggressive, has the ability of flight, regeneration and Grabity Beam would cut through the Ice breath of Shimo.
My vote goes to Ghidorah!
I haven't seen GxK yet but yeah I can see where you are coming from
