I don't think that specific sheet mentioned anything that happened after, people don't even know when it takes place in the film. Heck, it could be towards the beginning, they could use it thinking it'll stop him, but they pull a Kingdom of Monsters and it further mutates him, giving him atomic breath. Who knows?

I think it depends on what monsters are used. Mutations that echo the "real creature" scenerio in the 1950s Toho movies might work: Rodan, Varan, Anguirus... But Mecha-Godzilla? Gigan? I don't think so. Even King Ghidorah, as much as I'd love to see him, probably wouldn't mesh well...

@Kyero

Oh, no, I completely agree. The notion that something that's hit with a nuclear bomb becomes one is absent minded, but so is the idea that anything that gets exposed by a nuclear bomb becomes a freak accident.

With that said, his logic makes just as much sense as anything else in the Godzilla series. It doesn't, however, seem to jive with what's being presented in the new movie.

KaijuKritic, you also make an excellent point outside of the literal stance. The original film and GMK, in particular, made some artistic choices to metaphorically link Godzilla to the bomb. (Wide shots of Tokyo in flames/ashes in Godzilla, the mushroom cloud in GMK.) It's part of what makes those two movies so wonderful. The idea that Godzilla is a nuclear bomb in slow motion was an original intent. While I'm ok with them touching on that in the new movie, I also want them to tackle some other things that have been ignored or untouched throughout the series.

@Kyero  I think you're missing the point of Valkorin's post.

Scientifically, you're right.  Being exposed to a nuclear blast does not turn anything into a nuke.  That is ridiculous.  But Godzilla is not science, it's a story.  Godzilla actually is a nuke.

I know, he looks nothing like a nuclear warhead.  But that's not the point.  Godzilla has always symbolized the pure destructive force nuclear weapons have.  His atomic breath isn't some random power the writers decided to give him, it's a physical representation of this relationship.  Toho stresses this all the time, like in GMK.  The first time we see him use his atomic breath, he creates a mushroom cloud.  I hate that scene, but it shows Godzilla's direct connection to Nuclear weapons.

You can't look at Godzilla scientifically.  His existance makes no logical sense.  It's all about the story and the meaning behind it.  Godzilla is a direct representation of the destruction a nuke can cause.  He actually is a nuclear weapon, both figuratively and literally.  Don't call people out on making those connections.  You're missing the point if you do.

His point isn't that Godzilla's atomic breath is going to be exactly as powerful as a nuclear weapon in one, single, shot.  That is again ridiculous.  But he is suggesting that if they plan on more realistically mirroring a nuke's power, then Godzilla's atomic breath will be that much stronger.  Not on par with a nuke in one blow, but certainly with similar destruction.

wwo that was insightful, i love it, we cant destroy him but maybe we can make something that can push him back into the ocean, now finally someone has put that thought into a way that can be accepted by everybody, as for mechagodzilla being in a movie, why not. make a giant robot just like in the original more or less and just make him look for realistic without taking away from the orginal concept to much. take from campy and make it better that is all, dont remove or destroy our or the fans idea of what would be cool or not. I am really curious on how they will rework the Flying creatures, like Ghidora and Rhodan.

Perhaps a monster similar to Angurius will team up with/aid Godzilla in the battle against the Mutos? That may be a little too much action for this movie, but who knows?

It's because Godzilla fans like to hold their favorite monsters close to them, and I understand, I would LOVE to see some classic Toho monsters in this movie, but its not going to happen. Fans like to imagine how the movie would be with Toho monsters in it. It would be a nice treat.

As much as I would absolutely LOVE to have Orga in the new Godzilla franchise, I know it wouldn't work out very well. I'd like to see some new, creative kaiju for once. :)

@GMAN2887 - Finally, someone who makes sense and has intelligent discussion capabilities! Thank you!

Anyway, my main point was that being exposed to a nuclear blast doesn't make you a nuclear bomb. I wasn't messing with the concept of creating a monster out of anything that's within range, as everyone knows how silly that is.

Still, saying that Godzilla's breath should be as powerful as a nuclear bomb is nonsensical and a rather stupid argument. That was what I was getting at.

That's the thing though. I am not sure he isn't in Japan in this movie, the 2014 one. Because I remember back when Pacific Rim was getting released Del Toro said during the making of he and the director of Godzilla had to discuss which cities would be destroyed in each movie so they didn't do the same things. Basically my point is, I do not think the new Godzilla is 100% set in just the USA.

I'm on the fence. It could certainly be sound effects but considering the love and respect they're giving this film don't be surprised if they throw a lot of winks to us hardcore fans. We're probably going to see twin japanese girls somewhere to honor mothra, a variation of the ifukube score and probably talk about a golden dragon

I think they're going for too much of a realistic aproach to construct giant robots which is why I'm thoroughly against G vs Pacific Rim. That movie was an alright time but the two worlds just are tonal opposites. In this universe we'd be more likely to see creatures like biollante which wouldn't break my heart at all. Also even though I completely don't believe the rumors about Hedorah in this for simple reasons as Toho hasn't given the rights to any other creatures , if reimagined he could be amazing. Think of a constantly shifting form rather than a solid creature and take away the eye beams. Basically Godzilla vs. the blob.

@Kyero

As much as I agree with you, you have to admit Toho clearly doesn't understand how nuclear bombs work anymore either. They proved such ineptness by writing increasingly stupid characters that think anything that gets hit by an atomic bomb automatically transforms into a giant beast. (Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah)

So on the one hand, Valkorin's playing on Toho's Heisei playing field. On the other hand, Toho's not in charge of this film.

KyeroGodzilla 2014 ForumGodzilla's most powerful abilities incorporated into the new movie.

The problem here is that Godzilla is not a nuclear bomb, he's a product of the nuclear bomb.

Something that you clearly didn't understand when writing this thread for everyone is that something that gets hit by a nuke doesn't turn into a nuke itself. Godzilla's thermonuclear breath is nothing more than a concentrated stream of radiation. It's power is not going to be anywhere near as destructive as that of a nuclear bomb.

Godzilla is a kaiju created from the atomic bomb. He himself is not an atomic bomb. He can't cause the same devastation in one shot as an atomic bomb.

Watching documentaries on nuclear bombs does not make you an authority on them, and you clearly have no idea what they are truly capable of beyond what you've been told on the screen. Do some real research, graduate with some kind of degree specializing in nuclear energy, and then you can tell us what Godzilla's nuclear breath should be like in real life.

As of now, you're just basing an opinion created by watching a few videos. Not enough to be credible.

Toho monsters will NOT be appearing in this franchise.

A reboot, be definition, ignores ALL previous content and continuity for the purpose of reinventing its characters, storyline, etc,.

Having Dr. Serizawa is already a big deviation and something of a risky move. However, given that he's so closely associated with Godzilla I can see why they'd bring him back even if his character is not the same as it was in the 50's version. No eye patch, no oxygen destroyer, an entirely new version of the character.

Still, Toho monsters are Toho monsters. They are not Legendary monsters. Legendary must acquire rights to EACH monster in the Toho lineup if they want to use them in their movies, and that would get crazy expensive especially if this first movie does well enough.

Another reason it's not going to happen is because Toho is not actually a part of this production. They own Godzilla, they do not own Legendary's story, its human characters, nor any other part of the feature except the monster known as Godzilla. All other Toho monsters should stay with Toho and in their original forms. Bringing them to the screen in CG just to please a few fans that want to see updated versions of them is not something Legendary is going to do, nor should they.

As I said, Toho monsters are Toho monsters. All of them: King Ghidorah, Mothra, Gigan, Anguirus, Destoroyah, Biollante, Spacegodzilla, Mechagodzilla... ALL Toho monsters belong in their original Toho forms and should NOT be used in Legendary's franchise.

This is a new version of Godzilla. A new story. A new universe centered around the creature. Bringing back Toho monsters just because a few fans want to see them would be contrived, irresponsible, and downright lackluster on the part of Legendary. If they can't create and maintain their own version of the creature without falling back on Toho for support, then they don't deserve to make the franchise in the first place.

No other Toho monsters besides Godzilla himself belong in Legendary's new franchise.

In short: No.

This is a reboot, not a remake. They are two very different things.

In a reboot, ALL previous content is ignored for the purpose of beginning a new franchise. Bringing back Dr. Serizawa alone is something of a risky and bold move on the part of Legendary as it breaks pattern for what it means to create a reboot. However, having the good doctor back for the sake of nostalgia is acceptable, though he is not going to be the same as he was before obviously. There won't be an oxygen destroyer this time around, nor does he have his eye patch (for all those Serizawa buffs out there).

Bringing back Toho monsters (even mechanical ones) is not something Legendary should do, nor is it likely that it will happen at all. Acquiring the rights to all of the different creatures is crazy expensive and not worth doing. We all love Toho monsters, but bringing them to the big screen in an AMERICAN franchise run by Legendary Pictures is not something that should happen. They are Toho monsters, and they are meant to be used by Toho. They are on board the project to make sure it goes well and that Legendary doesn't stray from Godzilla's design. They are not actually in charge of what happens, nor are they actually technically affiliated with the Legendary franchise outside of owning the original Godzilla character.

Toho has no input on what Legendary's story is, the human characters, nor anything else involved save for Godzilla himself. Toho is not going to give Legendary their monsetrs just to please a few fans that want to see them on the big screen in CG as opposed to a 1960's or 70's suit. Contrary to popular belief, big name companies do NOT always appease the fans, nor do they even pay attention to them most of the time. They pay more attention to professional criticism and total income than they do fan reaction.

Your idea might be interesting for a fan comic, if you'd care to write it on a public online fan fiction writing website, but as far as being a possibility for a movie produced by Legendary, not happening.

looked into this myself. Can't help people may be acting on wishful thinking when they've said that, because when you give it a few more listens it becomes clear that it's just a mixture of twisting/grinding metal sounds and the score.

On the subject of the score did anyone else catch near the end of the trailer, more so at the end? The homage to the "BOOM/THUMP" noises in the 1954 original's opening credits? If you you watch the Japanese trailer it's actually featured more! But this may also be, like this Anguirus thing, a bit of wishful thinking?
