I never said this, but I will now: Such a poorly-rushed execution on the marketing with this one. Instead of using shots that look like it would actually be from a real security camera or found footage, they decided to use shots from the trailers and call that found-footage. A stark contrast to what they used for Mothra. So disappointing.

Since when did this forum go from "The use of Ghidorah's tails" to "Symbolism in Godzilla movies"? Also, can we please get back on topic? Thanks.

Godzilla Movie Reviews,
Listing all of this is really an exercise in undermining all the individual variables that make up themes and meanings that are truly too broad to list. The bottom line is pretty much every one of these movies is about something, even when they don't pull it off.

The Showa Godzilla goes through such a diverse, varied development that I feel he best represents all facets of the character. From nightmare fuel to a seasoned superhero, the Showa Godzilla encompassed just about everything that makes Godzilla what he is.
As far as static interpretations go, Heisei comes next. I'm not a huge fan of the 1990s movies, but I did like the design and execution.

I have to say it's '93 for me. He's the perfect Godzilla to me. My second fave is '95, then probably Tokyo S.O.S. or '54 for sheer classic-ness. The 60s and 70s Godzillas are awesomely cheesy. Actually they're all awesome. The only ones I don't like are GINO, (who really doesn't count) Shin (I can't get used to the bowling pin shape. or the purple breath. or the fact that he looks like bacon. I could go on, but I digress) I'm not a fan of GMK Goji in execution, though I like the initial design: the dinosaur-like stance was a cool idea. I'm not comfortable with his white eyeballs.

This actually funny that this was posted. My buddy and I were just talking about this. I told him to pay attention to Ghidorah’s tail and listen to it rattle. I remember reading an article about Dougherty explaining that they made Ghidorah to be similar to a snake. So pay attention to that tail and his movements. Also worth noting, in the trailer when his three heads simultaneously attack Big G, the attack is similar to a snake bite times 3!!!

I thought that the Godzilla Anime Trilogy was spectacular. I really liked the Godzilla design as well. Also, I am aware that many people disliked MechaGodzilla City, but I thought it was a genius idea. On the series as a whole, a friend of mine wrote a very interesting perspective on it, which can be found here.

TheLazyFish, I don't know if you are joking, but here goes. Gojira(1954) was a metaphor for the dangers of nuclear weapons. Godzilla Raids Again(1955) is a metaphor for the price of progress. Godzilla vs. Hedorah(1971), had a very strong environmental message, portraying Godzilla fighting pollution. Jumping forward, Shin Godzilla was a metaphor for the ineffectiveness of the governement in handling the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011. Also, from Gojira(1954), through the Heisei era, Godzilla films show how the Japanese people felt about the United States. Godzilla became gradually friendlier as Japan became closer to the U.S., but by the time the Heisei era arrived, Japan had begun to change its view. This is most evident in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah(1991), when the U.S. troops are portrayed as stupid and incompetent. Symbolism was the origin of the Godzilla franchise, and still continues to be a driving force in its development.

I wasn't a huge fan of it but it wasn't terrible. Honestly my biggest problem was that we got another version of MechaG, and King Ghidorah like this new medium meant absolutely nothing and we were going to get the same 3-4 monsters that always get used. 20+ monsters better use the same 2 again right?

Heisei, in particular the Biogoji and Ghidogoji in terms of pure design.

To be fair, its actual performance is better than people are giving it credit for.
It has a fair bit of regular kinetic energy dump, seeing as how it visibly pushes the female MUTO around, even briefly reversing her momentum. Its heat is also immense, being able to damage her where nukes are considered iffy.
And of course you have the moment where it burns through her neck cleanly. Upon further analysis, it's actually quite a strong iteration of the atomic breath. It just looks more realistic, being a plasmatic vapour, and thus not as visually striking as a solid beam. I do agree that it has a more refined appearance in the upcoming film.

Keep in mind, this could extend to other Monsters, not just Godzilla! I would love to see origin stories based on other Toho Monsters. I'd love a Manda movie or Titanosaurus. I would kill for a Gigan movie... but that might be a stretch.

A lot better ^ and more powerful. It seemed a bit weak in 2014 compared to what it looks like in the KOTM trailers.

Heisei Godzilla was my favorite until Legendary redesigned big G. In all honesty, I am loving the look of KOTM Goji so far, more so than G'14. Not to sound cliche, but I think KOTM Goji will have my vote for all time favorite.

If I remember correctly, some of Godzilla comics had the big G romping around in different historic periods. So there is precedence for the big G to appear in different time periods.

Could be. That would be an interesting scene transition, to put it mildy. Although it's also possible that this takes place earlier in the film before the monster action gets going. Maybe more as a foreshadowing of what is to come later in the film. We'll find out soon enough.

Donzilla55: Agreed. I like the Heisei era Godzilla the most (although the millienuim series were not bad, my second favorite design, well, for the Tokyo S.O.S version anyway). The Heisei series have the proportions just right. His head shape and size, his spikes and tail, were the right proportions that adds up to a great design. Although the 1985 version had his head too big, but this was corrected in Godzilla vs Biollante.

I didn't really like it that much, the aliens' motives were weak, voice acting was off, pretty sure the main character did something he shouldn't have with his sister, and it got REAL weird, I think the first one was best. THEY ALSO UNDERPOWERED A MEGAGODZILLA!!!!!! HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?!!!!!!!
