Godzilla is known worldwide, it's been around longer than probably most of our life-times. I seriously don't think it'll be a flop. Cloverfield was an only movie and it still did rather well and that was based of the point of view of a camera guy.. Imagine what Godzilla will do, fighting monsters, destroying the cities, realisim. I don't think this movie will be a flop, and if you think so, well I feel bad for you man

The fact spiderman 2 came back and won the first round blows my mind, but I don't think it had quite the deficit Godzilla does. Unfortunately Godzilla got a bad draw, a huge viewer base of MTV is teenage girls and unfortunately Godzilla is going up against the biggest movie of the year quite possibly for most of them, granted the voting on that poll is 1 of the most random, uncommon voting I've ever seen so who knows

Ill tell everyone why i love it so much, reasons:
His head: his idk "eyebrows-forehead" looks exactly like the one from the 1974 goji
His neck:so much detail with the skin, his gills make him way more realistic considering hes a water type creature.
His body: well a lil skinny like u said not rly godzilla-isch but i must say it looks good to me, his spines dont look like they're made out of rubber like 90'goji instead of a solid rock-bone material and i hope they dont move this time.
His tail: looks so much like classic godzilla i love it.

If pacific rim showed us anything no matter how good a movie is it will be beaten out by movies around it if they have a bigger name associated with it(I don't think any1 would say Grown Ups 2 is better than Pacific Rim, actually is was almost universally hated but it did better than Pacific rim in the box office) So Godzilla has 1 week to itself before X men comes out the week after and kills a huge amount of its potential audience.

Of course this movie could flop. But there's no evidence in the first post that supports that possibility, especially in relation to Cloverfield. Cloverfield did well both domestically and worldwide for a 1st quarter movie. It made its budget back seven times over.

Why the heck would they kill him off?
That would be a waste. It worked in 1954 because he wasnt a franchise back then. But he is now. And you would need to be a complete moron(like Emmerich) to kill him of. Godzilla wont die, he will win a glorious battle, and then walk into the ocean to explore this new world.

This design is great because they knew they didnt have to differentiate. They kept this design at Godzilla, and knew there was no reason to change it into a shitty oversized dinosaur. They kept him at a design that looked like it was the next millenium design.
He looks like Godzilla.
He works like Godzilla.
He acts like Godzilla.
He IS the TOHO Godzilla, done in cgi. And that is what i love about this.

I never really like it when they keep the concept close to heart and conservative. This Godzilla is the perfect midway point between a normal godzilla and let's say Zilla for our purposes. It's got enough kick to look totally new and can deprecate itself from all the other G's but doesn't go against the grain as much as Zilla did concept wise (and for the record I love the Zilla design and movie).

I dont think so, I think it will do really well. They did an excellent job of casting this movie. Brian Cranston just won the Grammy for best actor in a TV show people totally adored. So that will bring in a ton of viewers who may not know Godzilla but will be enticed because of him.
It will be hyped to high heaven I think and for good reason it looks ah-mazing. I wasn't a fan before, now I am after seeing this level of actor choices, the gorgeous effects and the care that the people making the movie put into it, it all looks fantastic and I can safely tell you other people I know who would normally not be stoked to see it are now too. This movie is special people can feel that, it's gonna be big.
People want to see the classics done well, I know a lot of older people that didn't watch the newer Godzilla movies because they thought they got stupid. Seeing this new version, they are excited to see Godzilla again.

G. H. (Gman)Godzilla 2014 ForumNo Super Bowl Commercial?Jan 17, 2014Reply
You're right, movies are a commodity to be sold like beer/cars...etc... But it's a product that's not reaching the Super Bowl audience according studies. That's great you remember the trailer for Transformers 2 and that you seem to be a part of the 30% that is taken by movie trailers. I for one didn't even remember Transformers 2 being advertised. Nor do I recall any other trailers outside of Star Trek, but that's because I was looking for it.
Based on that it may not be the most lucrative outlet to advertise films. So what if it's not, as you say, good for the gander? We have to consider the audience and what they cater to. "Millions of people" don't always equate the "target people". You wouldn't advertise Criminal Minds during Power Rangers. Maybe movies aren't the right outlet to advertise during the Super Bowl? There isn't necessarily evidence of that, but there is evidence these spots aren't staying with the Super Bowl audience like other ads. Perhaps those studies are on to something.
In any case I feel like the advertising for Godzilla has been fairly standard just as any other movie. Saving the Godzilla trailer for the end of the year and releasing it after the X-Men and Captain America trailers was brilliant because it sticks out more and overshadows previously released trailers. I think most people are just nervous after what happened to Pacific Rim-- which is understandable, but not entirely warranted. That and there's an arrogant sense of self-entitlment from a large portion of the fanbase. Many of them just want more immediately and others feel Godzilla should get a special treatment because, well, they're fans of it.

I dont think it will be a flop - but its also not going to be close to the big hit of the year either. It's got a decent amount of competition around the time it comes out - and I dont thinka lot of parents are going to be taking young children to this after they see the trailers lol. All of that is fine by me. As long as it does well enough for a sequel to be greenlit immediately, I dont care if it does just ok.
Im actually proud of Legendary - if they only cared about making the most money possible, this would be a very different movie...maybe they would have showed some chick with big boobs washing a car in the trailer (*ahem Transformers) and thrown a few big name (but not necessarily talented) actors into the film. So many movies nowadays feel focus group tested. This Godzilla is going to be something different-which means its a little bit of a risk. But if its as good as it looks - word of mouth will carry it and it will do just fine.

"the damage has been done."?! WHAT KIND OF NEGATIVE TALKING IS THAT?! There hasn't been any damage done to this film, it just starts its marketing like any other big budget film would. I remember the 2005 King Kong film starting it's marketing in December of 2004, and Pacific Rim's marketing did the same thing in 2012, so this isn't any different. You are apparently confusing the difference between movie marketing and how a movie is executed, depenging on what direction the director is going for. Big budget films ALWAYS makes their first trailer debut in December, and I'd be lying if I didn't say I sorta knew Godzilla was going to make his first trailer debut in December. But overall, no damage hasn't been done to the movie, it's just all the false speculations that made you think like this.

I feel you are making an odd distinction here... you seem to be assuming that what's good for the goose isn't good for the gander. What I mean by this is that a company advertises it's product during the Super Bowl to promote it's product and increase it's awareness/popularity/sales/namebrand/etc. The same could be said to apply to movies. Movies are products that are sold in the form of tickets. They are a commodity much like beer, cars, etc. Showing a memorable enough trailer could do for Godzilla what advertising does for Chrysler, budweiser, etc. Sure the creators of Star Trek think they made a mistake premiering the trailer there... then again they premiered a very short trailer that didn't show much. I actually remember the teaser trailer for Transformers 2 premiering during it's Super Bowl and being actually quite impressed with that one. Now yes you are correct it wouldn't be a premiere... yet they could premiere something big enough to draw attention, such as showing Godzilla or one of the MUTOS or a battle of some sort that would draw more attention. I agree not having one will hopefully not break the movie... however I'm not terribly sure when they will premiere the actual trailer. 300 seems too far out from now/too close to Godzilla's actual release and I can't think of any other big WB/Legendary movies coming out between now and then so it's going to be interesting... I almost feel like Legendary waited too long to release the teaser that came out with the Hobbit.

I agree they have to cater to modern audiences, but they have to do it in a way that's appropriate for the movie. There's nothing in the mood piece or first trailer to suggest they're going for a pop/trendy route of promotions. They're selling it like a horror piece. Imagine Dragons and Radioactive are a far cry away from any sort of horror.

No show or show runner EVER has hard factual evidence that they will get a return on what they spend their money on.
Very true. That's why the Nielson ratings system exists. It gives them a worked (albiet, flawed) factsheet that tells them if they should continue or not.
Let's say an advertiser spent the premium, 4 million dollars per 30 seconds, for air time for a two minute trailer. That would be 16 million dollars on what could easily be a return far exceeding that if it helps the movie bring in say $500 million or more (and let's face it, many many media outlets are placing this at the top of their most anticipated lists the number of which was last seen with the Avengers which brought in over a billion if I recall correctly). It's high risk high reward that's the point.
But the problem is there is no way to determine if a Super Bowl ad had anything to do with a movie raking in those kind of numbers. There is no system able to determine if a Super Bowl ad helped a movie get to $500 million or not. In the case of Paramount Pictures, Star Trek into Darkness didn't perform to the expectations they had hoped. There was a Super Bowl ad for that movie and they later admitted fault to spending the dough on that. All it did was put an already expensive movie further into a hole. $16 million is a great deal of money. Some smaller movies are made on a budget like that and it's simply not worth risking that much on something like a Super Bowl ad.
As for those ads, I'll have to take your word for it, but I don't remember them being quite as long. It'll be interesting to see which ads do run long for the Super Bowl this year and how much certain companies spent on them.
The Super Bowl is viewed by over 100 million people. The point of advertising, as I'm sure you know, is to promote your product to the largest audience possible. The more you promote a good, strong, message to the more likely you will receive a fair if not excellent rate of return.
Very true, but the fact that 70% of that 100 million remember the comercials you posted over movie trailers in the last year isn't encouraging for film studios and they're going to need harder evidence to make that kind of leap. By all means, I'd love Godzilla to have a Super Bowl trailer, but it's not something that will break the movie. And it's certainly not something that will propel it to boxoffice gold either. At most, it would just raise some awarness and that's just not worth $8-$16 million when that amount could be more appropriately spread to various TV spots and other media promotions closer to its release.
Interestingly, I could see Transformers going for a minute long spot. The difference simply being that Transformers has already proven to make an annoyingly large amount of dough three seperate time and that this is the movies first trailer. That's a much bigger deal than a secondary trailer or TV spot. But again, there are also hard numbers in Transformers favor. Not a lot of risk there.

The story for vs. King Ghidorah is a complete and utter mess, I agree, but it actually did aim to explain the origin of the Heisei Godzilla. All of the actions of the Futurians led to the Heisei Godzilla's birth in the 1970s and then he attacked in 1984. The only reason he got bigger is becaused he absorbed the radiation from a modern nuclear sub. (Which also doesn't make sense, but... why not.)
Did the origin of the Heisei Godzilla need to be explained? No. But it was a fun excuse to involve time travel for the first time in the series.

I think you could've chosen a better example. Divergent is Wally Pfister's debut film. He's an Oscar winning cinematographer who worked with Christopher Nolan on all the Dark Knight movies and Inception. He has put together an impressive cast and Nolan-inspired script to create something far more original and less trendy than most of the other movies on that list.
Interstellar looks incredible, but I'm just as intrigued about Divergent and curious to see if Wally Pfister is as good of a director as he is a cinematographer.
I'm also not entirely sure what you mean about the advertising being poor for Godzilla. I know it's "trendy" for Godzilla fans to complain about this kind of thing, but the truth is the promotional work has been pretty standard to this point. It's released just as many trailers and incorporated just as much viral marketing as X-Men, Captain America...etc... I also don't see any example of fans "having to take matters into their own hands," if anyone is arrogant enough to believe such a thing...
