UPDATE 07/20/2021:
Godzilla vs. Kong dropped to #3 in its third weekend, via Kogyotsushin.
Pixiin reports the film's total is now at an estimated 1.41 Billion Yen ($12.9 Million)--$2.4 Million up from last weekend. This puts attendance at an estimated, 902,491, which is still just under Terror of MechaGodzilla for the series attendance.
Here's how Godzilla vs. Kong stacks up to the last three live action Godzilla films third weekend totals.
3rd Weekend Total Comparison:
Godzilla 2014: $20.5M.
Shin Godzilla: $32.6M.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters: $20.5
Godzilla vs. Kong: $12.9
I believe that was the latest Monarch Director played by Lance Riddick, not Brooks. Riddick originally had a bigger part in the film, but his scenes were cut.
That wasn't Houston Brooks. You can find him in the prequel comic Kingdom Kong though.
like the scene after kong wakes up where He and the other dr talk
dilophosaurus has a flat broad head if you remove its crests it looks like a ceolophysis
Kind of, but Im thinking of Dilophosaurus, Cryolophosaurus, Monolophosaurus, and others, which all dont have flat heads
maybe not sauropods but theropods tend to have flat broad heads
Im pretty sure Dr. Brooks survived kotm because I see him in gvk
Japanese creatures tend to be more insectoid or mammailian in mythology. But dinosaurs didnt have particularly flat heads.
Well its because reptiles tend to have flat heads while mammals tend to have round heads.
Godzilla is supposed to be a reptile which is why americans make him more reptilian however the Japanese design him to be more mammalian? who knows why?
No but only Godzilla related is king of all monsters movie and Aftershocks and in that comic he said he was going to skull island
Thats not at all the point of this thread. iT was talking about a design choice, whether or not you like the design is your opinion.
I want to counter your arguament in saying MOnsterverse Goji cant be called
the king of the monsters because it didnt fight classic toho monsters is flawed. He fought Ghidorah, and hesei fought a new kaiju in its first two monster movie.
Also random note, the flat head seems to be a very american design choice.
isnt Dr brooks in GvK?
Other than that info I cant contribute much
So you're trying to dictate what a "True Godzilla" design is based only on their head shapes...
are you serious...?
Now Godzilla Ultima is bsically hesei gamera
This is a funny thread. I guess I'll add I never thought about the flat head thing, but I prefer my titular kaiju to have mohawks.
I like the less flat head of 1954. The brows make godzilla more menacing to me
HinikunaGoji,
This will be its third weekend coming up, so it's too early to say. But some analysts are projecting it to finish with $15-20 million which would put its attendance around 1.05-1.40 million. If that's the case it will be the lowest grossing and least attended Monsterverse Godzilla film, which isn't great incentive for Toho.
However, I think it will very much surpass $15 million--I'm not sure why analysts are claiming that's a potential cap unless it drops really hard this weekend. Japanese Godzilla fans seems to like it, so if they keep coming back for it the drop might not be very significant. It's just having a hard time finding an audience outside the fan base.
I cant answer that question.
Do we know if it did better than kotm yet?
so what exactly is your point? Is it in response to people saying kong rules hollow earth?
UPDATE 07/16/2021:
The actuals for Godzilla vs. Kong last weekend come from Bunkatsushin, with 1.15 Billion Yen which translates to roughly $10.5 Million. Attendance is now at 734,586. With any luck it should surpass Terror of MechaGodzilla and Godzilla vs. Megalon this weekend.
It's currently projected to finish around 1.05-1.40 million.
sorry for low quality
UPDATE 07/11/2021:
Via box office commentator Luiz Fernando, weekend estimates for Godzilla vs. Kong put it at #2 with a $2.1 million--About $1 million less than expected and 51% drop from last weekend.
It's current estimated total is $10.1 million and is eyeing a $15-20 million finish depending on how solid its legs are. Actuals later.
UPDATE 07/09/2021:
According to Bunkatsushin weekend actuals keep Godzilla vs. Kong at 5.62 million with a 392,343 attendance. The first Hollywood or western movie to open #1 in Japan in 40 weeks.
Japan has recently declared another state of emergency due to rising Covid numbers. Prior states of emergency have had negligible effect on the box office according to Japanese B.O. pundits. We'll see how well Godzilla vs. Kong holds this weekend.
Just loved this slope unblocked, can't tell in words!!!
Personally, I'm waiting for all the Godzilla Singular Point episodes to come out on Netflix. After watching all the episodes, you can judge the origin: is Godzilla one of a kind? Or is the Ultima version a recurring spawn that leads to the catastrophe of the universe? Too many "maybe".And not enough employee monitoring
Summer of 1988. I was seven years old, and already a huge King Kong fan. I saw that King Kong Vs. Godzilla was showing on TBS one afternoon, and I started watching it halfway through. I was watching it for Kong, but by the end of the movie, I was hooked on Godzilla. All throughout 2nd and 3rd Grade, I absolutely devoured every Godzilla VHS I could get my hands on. I don't know what it was I loved so much about Godzilla, but it's a fascination that's never left me.
Chris,
I'm not expecting it due to Covid, but it's always hard to tell with the first week in Japan. Either GvK was front loaded or it has legs. We'll have a better idea next weekend.
Do we think GvK will surpass KOTM's Japanese box office performance like it did in the US? Still baffled at that.
UPDATE 07/05/2021:
Cinema Today Japan reports the film had an attendance of 390,000 over the three day weekend. (293,000 for Saturday and Sunday). Kogyotsushin confirms it was #1 for the weekend having opened in 364 screens--roughly 70 less than the last three live action Godzilla movies, but over 200 more than the anime films.
