Recently Dman has been analyzing the chances of either of the main monsters in GvK becoming the “bad guy” or antagonist of some sort. Now his Kong video was logical and made sense. Kong has always been a sympathetic character, and being more humanoid than Godzilla he’s more relatable. The film would suck absolute gonads if he was the “bad guy”. This thread mostly covers why I don’t want Godzilla to become a “bad guy” either, despite Dman’s wishes.
1. Defeats the purpose of KOTM.
Now everyone who sees this will probably go to the “good thing he’s one our side” “For now” scene. I really think this is just sequel bait. They did something really similar at the end Gamera: Attack of Legion. While at the start of GIII: Revenge of Iris, Gamera seemed to be becoming less friendly with humanity, being extremely careless in the destruction he causes from fighting the Hyper Gyaos, he still turned out to be on our side by the end of the film. Now I’m open to the idea of something like that in GvsK with Godzilla, but I really don’t want him to actually become hostile towards humanity. It renders the coexistence aspect in KOTM meaningless. The entire point of the film was for humanity to officially become allies with Godzilla. Serizawa’s sacrifice would be in vain and the military teaming up with Godzilla in Boston completely pointless.
2. Fights between Monsters in the Monsterverse have never been about humanity, at least not fully.
Dman wants Godzilla to do something to humans that makes Kong mad and that’s what their fight will be about. This would be kind of a jarring switch from what we’ve seen in the Monsterverse so far. Yes, Godzilla and Kong might partially fight other monsters to protect humans, but they are mainly concerned with all life in their respective territories, Godzilla’s being the Earth and Kong’s being Skull Island. And they don’t care if they squash a few of us if we’re in their way. It has always mainly been about territory, the environment, and/or dominance. Honestly I think a similar reason for their fight would make more sense in the context of the Monsterverse.
3. It’s been done before
Most of us don’t want a rehash of King Kong vs Godzilla even though it was a good film. This is my main reason for not wanting a “bad guy” between the two monsters. I want something new. Godzilla has already been the “bad guy” in their first film together. I get wanting to respect the original, but that doesn’t mean the new one has to be a copy paste of it.
So those are my reasons why I don’t want either Kong or Godzilla to be a villain.
