Will this upcoming Toho Godzilla interfere with Legendary's Godzilla? Now i dont mean the film itself, of course Godzilla 2-3-4 will be released. What i do mean is will people not be as hyped for Godzilla 2? Will they forget about how awesome Godzilla's design is compared to the 2016 one?

The main thing i loved about Godzilla 2014 is Godzilla's design, when they make the new design will you all forget about how awesome the 2014 was?

Good grief.

A little early to say. The new Toho design might either suck or be great. As far as we know there's nothing put to paper as of yet. The nice thing is Toho seems to be taking more time with this production than they have with Godzilla in the last 40-ish years.

I think, like the 2014 Godzilla, there will be a honeymoon period with fans. People will see it. Call the design, or effects or story, or whatever the, "best of the series" because it's new (just like the 2014 version) and eventually people will come down from their high on it and be more critical of it. (Also like the 2014 version.)

As far as designs go I never thought the 2014 look was anything overtly special, so I can't really relate to the question. As far as the movie itself, I think keeping Godzilla in public mind while we wait for the 2018 film is smart. I just didn't expect Toho would make a new movie to do it. It'd be kinda cool if we got a new movie every two years, one Toho and one Legendary.

I don't think it will intervine, and personally id prefer for toho to stick with a classic godzilla design, making it more dinosaur like

I don't understand how you can say 'how awesome Godzilla's design is compared to the 2016 one' when we haven't even seen the 2016 design.  For all we know it could be even better. I do enjoy the 2014 design, but I wouldn't be surprised if Toho made something even more compelling.

In terms of making people less excited about the 2018 movie, I don't see this being an issue. I get the feeling that the only people that will even care that Toho has a new Godzilla film will be Godzilla fans. If they manage to get non-fans into the movie, then they're keeping Godzilla relevant and in people's brains.

Perhaps. It really depends on if the Toho film is shown in American theaters.

If anything I feel the movie will add more hype to the 2018 Godzilla 2. As for the design that's opinion related. If people liked the 2014 design they still will, if people didn't then nothing will change. If someone loves the 2014 design but thinks the 2016 is done better that doesn't mean they forgot about the 2014 design it just means they found the 2016 design more to their tastes.

"Will Godzilla 2016 interfere with Godzilla 2018?"

Answer: No.

Reason:  Toho thought of doing a series that alternates with the American Movies if the Godzilla 2014 was a success.  An American reboot to kick things off, then a Japanese Reboot, and then alternate every other year or so.  2014 American, 2016 Japanese, a second possible 2017 Japanese, 2018 American, 2019 Japanese, 2020- 2021 Japanese, 2022 American, 2023 Japanese and so forth.

Just a guess, but I think some arrangement will be worked out between Toho and Legendary about the Toho Godzilla being released in the States (or North America for that matter), hopefully it will be on the big screens, but if not, I can live with watching it first on DVD, so long as we can watch it.

^Yeah, lets hope we don't have to wait too long after its Japanese release to get it here.

Here's a question.. who would release it here on home video?  Warner Brothers perhaps?  Media Blasters, like they did with Gamera the Brave?  Is there still some deal that ties the property to Sony?

Only time will tell. :)

Danzilla,
I've been wondering that as well. As far as 2005/2006 (somewhere in that range) Sony had first rights refusal. I'm not sure if they still do or if there's any distribution deal in place with Legendary and Warner Brothers or if a past deal with Sony Home Video has made that impossible.

I don't think anyone will forget Godzilla 2014's design by a long shot. Yeah, we're getting a new Toho Godzilla movie, and will have a new design. But how different will it look? Obviously in nearly every Godzilla movie, the suits are adjusted or completely remodeled by scratch. The only time however where Godzilla got a drastic change was Godzilla 2000. Clearly not counting Zilla for obvious reasons, but regardless of what I'm trying to say, knowing Toho, the suit will be different than the others in the past but how different is probably the key question?

I doubt Toho would be making this movie if they thought it would undermine Legendary's series.  Remember Toho gets both liscensing fees and Japanese distribution rights and they get this despite not having to infest a dime in its production.  I see this move as similar to to how when a new Batman or Superman movie hits the big screen there is often a lower budgeted animated movie premire on video at the same time.  Nobody wories that one of these flicks undermines the big screen versions.  There are times the animated tie ins are better than what hits theaters.  Who can forget how much better Subzero was than Batman and Robin.  Its an opportunity to cash in on the popularity of the character and keep the character in the public lexicon and of course make money off the 2014 movies popularity and take advantage of public demand for more with Legendary waiting till 2018 to deliever any sequel

Simple Answer: They release it worldwide, the legendary series will sadly be screwed! Why? The General Audiance are the ones who gave this film it's money! We jack to none! So if they release it worldwide, the general audiance will be confuse if its canon to the legendary series! And if they go full on suit, Then sadly Godzilla dies in box office again and Godzilla 3 will probably suck because no one except us will wanna see it!!!

Which A) isn't true and B) assumes Toho has the power to distribute movies outside Japan on their own. They don't

I understand westerners make light of the Godzilla series due to a lack of understanding. Legendary's movie hasn't changed nor will ever change that. To assume one film can change the minds of people that have already formed a multi-decade opinion is shortsighted. Regardless, that's never stopped Godzilla bouncing back for sixty years now. Claiming Godzilla would "die at the box office" has little to nothing to do with Toho wanting to greenlight their own productions.

And far, far more Godzilla movies have been released theatrically in North America (and other countries) than in the years you've listed. Toho can not release movies outside Japan on their own without making a deal with a distributor. Distributors have to want to put the money into releasing them theatrically. Toho's current North American rights holder of the franchise is Legendary-- So if Godzilla 2016 were to be released theatrically Legendary would have to agree to do it. Do you really think they're going to? On DVD and Bluray, sure; but theatrically? It has no chance outside of some minor showings in maybe six theaters across the country. Legendary won't want it to conflict with their own film and will likely just release it on home video like Sony did with the Millennium series after Godzilla 2000.

Toho would also need to find distributors wanting to release the movie theatrically in every other country if they wish it to be a worldwide, theatrical endeavor. They may succeed if it's a solid movie, but even then it's far from assured. But you need to understand, "They've done it before I'm sure they can get help again" is ignoring a great deal of logistics with a lot of hand waving.
