MemberTitanosaurusDec-07-2014 8:04 AMWhy were the first two series called the Showa and Heisei series/era? I understand why the third series was called the Millennium series since it was the begining of the new millennium (begining of the year 2000). But I never understood why the first two were called what they were. So does anyone know why?

The initial series of movies is named for the Sh?wa period in Japan (as all of these films were produced before Emperor Hirohito's death in 1989). This Sh?wa timeline spanned from 1954, with Godzilla, to 1975, with Terror of Mechagodzilla. With the exceptions of Godzilla, Godzilla Raids Again, and Mothra vs. Godzilla, much of the Sh?wa series is relatively light-hearted.
Heisei series (1984–1995)
The timeline was revamped in 1984 with The Return of Godzilla; this movie was created as a direct sequel to the 1954 film, and ignores the continuity of the Sh?wa series.

AdminGodzillaDec-07-2014 8:45 AMThe Showa period is the era in Japan ruled by Emporer Hirohito, or the "Showa Emporer" posthumously. Hirohito's reign lasted from 1945-1989.
The Heisei period is the era in Japan ruled by Hirohito's son, Akihito. It started the day after Hirohito's death in 1989. The Heisei period is still going on in Japan since Akihito is still alive.
Because all of the original Godzilla movies from 1954-1975 take place in the Showa period of Japan it's known by fans as "The Showa Series". Although The Return of Godzilla/Godzilla 1985 also takes place in the Showa Period of Japan, all of its sequels were released from 1989-1995 during the Heisei Period of Japan. So even though The Return of Godzilla/Godzilla 1985 is technically a Showa Period film, it's a Heisei Series Godzilla movie due to the continuity of the sequels which take place during the Heisei Period. (It simply makes sense to lump the film with its sequels.)
The Millennium Series is called a different name to separate it from the Heisei series, even the though the Heisei Period is still going on in Japan. I've heard that Japan doesn't seperate the Godzilla series with the Showa and Heisei names as often as Westerners do though. Apparently in Japan the Showa Series is called "The Original Series", the Heisei Series is called "The VS Series" and the Millennium Series is the same.

MemberGiganDec-07-2014 10:14 AMThe Showa and Heisei periods were named after the times of the Emperor's who ruled, at that time. But the genius above me explained it in more detail.
Good grief.

MemberMothra LarvaeDec-07-2014 10:25 AMI've heard of fans in Japan calling the Millennium Series the "X Series" like they call the Heisei Series the "VS Series," since three of the Millennium films use "X" instead of "tai" or "VS."

AdminGodzillaDec-07-2014 3:02 PMI've heard that as well, but not quite as often as the "Original" and "VS" series titles. Probably just because it's the most recent series.
