MemberMothra LarvaeMay-20-2014 6:35 PMWho is James Rolfe, and why are we worried about his opinion? I'm not trying to be mean or anything, I've honestly never heard of him? Is he a kaiju expert, film critic, youtube celeb? A bit of all the above?

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-20-2014 7:19 PMAlways enjoyed his videos. Loved his video where he took a large Toho trivia quiz. I wasn't really a fan of the Mutos either, considering they do look astonishingly similar/identical to Cloverfield.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-20-2014 7:22 PMI love James Rolfe and I have been following him since 2006. He is my favourite YouTuber but I kinda disagree with him. I think the MUTOs are pretty creative and original. Everyone has their opinions.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-20-2014 7:24 PMWOLFGUY- true but you got to agree they are at the same time there on thing with emp powers and instead of Pairsites dropping off of them they mate and have baby's. Plus baby cloverfield (the one from the movie) would get drop in 5 seconds. Idk maybe a adult cloverfeild could do better

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-21-2014 1:30 AMMonsters will always be inspired by other designs. Gareth Edwards has even rebuttled claims like Mr. Rolfe's on a few occasions, explaining that designing a new monster is like finding the last parking space at Disneyland. I look at the fan art forums of people's own Kaiju designs & they ALL bear a resemblance to another in some way. So as much as I respect AVGN's opinion, I personally feel he may have jumped the gun a little bit here.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-21-2014 7:42 AMAs an avid follower of James Rolfe, better known as the Angry VideoGame Nerd, as the OP should have mentioned actually, let me move in on this topic.
Now, I have watched pretty much every video James Rolfe has ever put up on his site Cinemassacre, including Godzillathon and the likes. What strikes me, always strikes me, is that though James is a great reviewer and a very smart guy, he's perpetually stuck in nostalgia. He also criticizes the Nolan Batman movies using nostalgic arguments, favoring towards the older more whimsical conceptions of Batman and he actually disliked the way they had made Batman into such a serious movie, again something which was new at the time. I just couldn't disagree more. He reluctantly accepts CGI is the future in movies for example, and his oncoming movie, the Angry videogame nerd movie, relies heavily and allmost solely on visual practical effects in stead of CGI. He even once did a video on old film recording tape used for cameras versus modern digital cameras. Even though he said that old film recording tape was hugely impractical and awful to work with, he still acted nostalgic towards it.
You have to know that he reviews old videogames from the 80's and 90's for a reason, his completely nostalgic nature. James Rolfe would naturally always prefer the Toho Godzilla rubber suit version over any american CGI version, no matter how good it is. Now he said he did like the movie, I know that, but honestly I have the feeling he thought it was just ok compared to 1998.If James had his way, the Muto monsters would have had crazy designs like Gigan or Destroyah. These designs would have lost the attention and of the mainstream immediately by sheer disbelief at how poorly they fit into the rest of the movie. I look up to James Rolfe and he's one of the main reasons I became a big Godzilla fan, but I heavily disagree with the statement that the Muto's suck. I mean seriously, during the movie I was actually wondering which I liked more, Godzilla or the Muto! I don't remember the design of cloverfield monster or the monster from Super 8, but what I can say is that at least the Behaviour of the Mutos was very unique, as was their fighting style and especially their roaring sounds.
