MemberMothra LarvaeMay-18-2014 8:54 AMWill we see Mothra in the inevitable "Godzilla" sequel? Despite director Gareth Edwards' apparent distaste for post-credit scenes, KStarsDrama, via JapNation AniManga, reports that a post-credits scene featuring Godzilla's biggest rival was shown in select Asian countries.
The site claims that in the scene, Mothra commands an army of fellow MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms) and generates a hurricane with its wings.
If Mothra does indeed appear in a future "Godzilla" movie, it'll be interesting to see how Edwards (or whomever else might end up helming the franchise) tackles the beast. It might be difficult to make the monster — which is literally a giant moth — scary and not cheesy or goofy.
Granted, the creature does have some terrifying powers, including spraying silk, dropping poison, and metamorphosing. KStarsDrama also points out that Godzilla has never been able to defeat Mothra on his own, so if we do have a Mothra-centric movie, Godzilla will most likely need the help of other Kaiju.
Maybe an appearance by Mothra will appease Japanese viewers who aren't impressed by previews of the American reboot.
“American Godzilla is just a giant iguana freaking out,” Mudai Nozaki told the Associated Press. Meanwhile, Godzilla enthusiast Kazuya Haraguchi lamented, "I hope the day will come when a Japanese director can make a Godzilla movie again for the world.”
Others, meanwhile, feel our new Godzilla is too "fat."
"That's what happens when all you do is eat and lay around," one person commented on a trailer for the film.
Edwards, for his part, isn't taking the criticisms too seriously.
"I feel really bad because I know Godzilla reads the forums," he told UrbanDaily. "He’s already got an image complex and he’s a really lonely guy. If people want to see him in a sequel, we need to learn to accept him the way he is. Don’t be too critical."
