Warning, there may be spoilers for those who have not seen the film. Read at you own risk.

I have seen the film twice, once in regular 3D and once in IMAX 3D which is a lot more awesome. I find the Muto monsters to be very interesting enemies for Godzilla.

First there is the Male Muto, aka HokMuto. It would seem the male of the species is the only one to have the ability to fly. This would suggest that when nesting, the male would be somthing of a hunter-gather, bringing food back to the nest for it's mate. It may also suggets that they mate like fish since the Muto eggs look like fish eggs. HokMuto is smaller than Godzilla, but faster. This suggests the HokMuto specializes in light attacks. As the male matures, he constantly calls out to a potential mate. Once mature, he will pursue a female using ecolocation. This makes the Muto the new bat monster thing (sorry Destoroyah).

Then there is the Female Muto, aka FemMuto. She does not have wings, but in there place an extra set of legs. The FemMuto seems to specialize in heavy attacks. The females also seem to be larger. Whether this is due to where the female hatched, or that the females are supposted to be larger is a little unclear (odd how midgets like HokMuto always get women twice ther size, huh.). The Female tends to stay near the nest once she lays her eggs. This may suggest that the Female will gaurd the eggs until they hatch, while the flying male brings home nuclear dinner. The parental behavior of these monsters is unknown since all the eggs were destroyed, but FemMuto looked very sad and very pissed at the same time when see saw the wreckage of her eggs.

Both use EMP attacks. This sends planes and helichopters out of the sky, and renders all ground electronics usless. This is a problem for us humans, since we are too reliant on out technology. The Mutos, in combat, work together. This makes them a problem for any animal (besides Godzilla) misfortunate to run into them.

On a final note, I believe the Mutos are worthy adversaries for the King of Monsters and would love to see them again in another film.

KINGKAIJUGOJIRA - I agree - the MUTOs are indeed a worthy adversary for Godzilla. Your analysis of their species is very interesting to read. Thank you very much for presenting this to us! :)

Larger female is consistent with many animal species, especially insects, but others too.  Agree they were worthy adversaries but to bring them back you've gotta bring something else new to the table.  Maybe  a larger, sentient "Queen" type--with something far more insidious in store for earth and mankind.

Dunno, it was a decent idea, but I'd like the next movie to do something new and unexpected...

That's mostly accurate apart from "hokmuto" and "femuto", but other than that it's a very thorough insight into these phenomenal monstrosities!

How far can we push nature before it pushes back?

in many species the female is larger than the male: Hyenas, birds of prey, spiders, and anglerfish (the most extreme example. it's crazy, look it up). However, the way they behaved in the movie reminded me in a way of a species of fish called a snake head. To defend their young, the male swims around close to the brood while the much larger female patrols the outer peremeter. It's a kind of specialization of the sexes to fulfill different roles in perpetuating the species. In the case of the Mutos it could be that the male acts first to repel a threat to the nest but if he has trouble the female is more than capable of dealing with the intruder.

I'd like the guy from the comic con footage to appear. But anything along the line of the Mutos would rock. They hinted at an entire world overrun with monster in the ancient past. Let's see some more of them!

why do the mutos have an EMP ability? electronics weren't around millions of years ago.

@ZillaForLife

The only reason I can think of, which is very farfetched or just plain outragious, is that back in their prehistoric era, there are a lot of organisms that feed on radiation and as a result had different abilities to attack/defend themselves. It may be possible that there are monsters with similar atomic breath or the like. MUTO's may have developed their EMP ability in order to counter or prevent other predator/attackers from using special abilities by nullifying it. Perhaps, similar to how it destroys electronics, it shuts down or incapacitates organs.

Actually the EMP is a bit easier to explain than that. Nucear energy when realesedhas a natural EMP that goes out, so Im gonna say that the way they pound thhe ground is a sign of dominance and is used to frighten smaller creatures and it takes an amount of energy to have that strength,so the glow and EMP are just a form of exhaust. A convenient side effect.

Or maybe the emp attack was to stop certain kaiju's attacks like King Ghidora's gravity beams. Also the Muto's wouldn't need to bring radiation to the nest. The kaiju just fed off the radiation or i guess ate the other kaiju.

Well, MECHA RODAN, I don't know... Godzilla wasn't exactally eating the MUTOs. I like to thing more along the lines that they ate IT... XD. And Muto where label as being parasitic in nature in the movie, laying the eggs in a creature rather thanmaking a nest. Perhaps the ristricted access to a lesser Kaiju to inject the eggs into. Yah know, like Komebas or Maguma or Gezora even...
