MemberTitanosaurusMay-13-2014 10:32 AMProbably not. After all, Legendary's Godzilla looks like Godzilla, has Atomic Breath, and is connected to the original movie by the mention of 1954. Plus, if renames, what would they call it?

AdminGodzillaMay-13-2014 10:49 AMToho rebranded GINO because 1) they knew fan reaction was overtly negative and 2) realized they could still make/make more money off of it by rebranding it as a different monster.
The likeness to Legendary's Godzilla is too close for a rebranding.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-13-2014 11:03 AMI heard one of the Toho executives was quite pleased with Godzilla and how it was protrayed. So no way. This Godzilla will be Godzilla.
It was never really fair to any of the fans of Godzilla to have the other creature associated with the history of Godzilla movies. Sure they took the name, but, really it was just another creature.

MemberTitanosaurusMay-13-2014 12:12 PMGMAN2887, when you say that "the likeness to Legendary's Godzilla is too close for a rebranding," you mean it would be a very bad move to rename him right?

Essentially, yes. What I mean is if Toho wanted to rebrand the new Godzilla as another creature, I don't think they could make a very good case for it because it distinctly looks like a traditional Godzilla-- barring very minor differences. GINO, on the other hand, easily looked like something else altogether.
But the head of Toho told Legendary CEO Thomas Tull that the Godzilla in Edward's film is the same one he grew up with and loved. So no, Toho won't be doing any rebranding.

AdminGodzillaMay-13-2014 3:55 PMThe cheapest you're going to find David Kalat's book is about $90. It's a great resource, but I don't think you're going to want to shell out the money for that.
Right now I would recommend August Ragone's book on Eiji Tsuburaya called "Master of Monsters". It's the same book Gareth Edwards read during the production and it gives an excellent insight into just how imporant Tsuburaya was as well as the hurdles he had to overcome at Toho. Take a look:

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-13-2014 5:04 PMI highly doubt the rename. As is stated about, Zilla received a negative reception in among the fandom due the nature and characteristics of the creature (specially the egg laying thing I think), those jus did not match with the true Godzilla. That was the reason why Toho thrown Godzilla 2000, to bring him back. Later on decided to identify, Zilla as another monster like they briefly specified in GMK, I am pretty sure you know that scene: during the Colonnel´s Speech two soldiers comment about a creature that attacked an American city at the end of 90s. They said that Americans thought it was Godzilla but they were wrong. Finally they made it official at Final Wars, were Godzilla faced and bashed Zilla

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-13-2014 11:50 PMI don't think so. Because Godzilla 98 just wasn't Godzilla. He was a giant iguana who looked like a T-rex and couldn't even breathe atmoic breathe. This Godzilla, is Godzilla!
