MemberMothra LarvaeMay-06-2014 5:28 PMIt has come to my attention that what we were told in the beginning of this Godzilla being a menace like the first Godzilla in 1954 might not be true. Through trailers and recent reviews with Gareth Edwards, Godzilla seems more like his Heisei counterpart more than the 1954 horror monster. They've made it seem like the thing that's causing humans trouble are the MUTO, and Godzilla's only purpose is to awaken just to stop them (like most heisei and showa movies). More and more they seem to make him out as the anti-hero, who doesn't pay attention to humans much and just wants to fight the other monsters. This contrasts the whole idea of the original Godzilla, who was mad at mankind and wanted vengeance. Anyone else find this a bit disappointing?
I was hoping for a Godzilla enraged at humanity for what they've done to him, seeking revenge. What we seem to be getting is a Godzilla who could care less for us and just walks through our cities as a short path to destroy the MUTOs, our existence unkown to him. This reminds me all to well of the heisei movies, which weren't bad, but they're not what I was looking for in a dark reboot.
I apologize if there is already a topic on this particular matter, I looked but couldn't find one.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-06-2014 5:37 PMWell, Godzilla is an animal in this movie. Also, we humans are like miniscule ants to Godzilla, and we don't even get Godzilla's recognition becuase we are so puny. He represents nature, and how we are not superior and rather inferior to it.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-06-2014 5:49 PMIts sad to say that most Godzilla fans are going to be very dissapointed with this movie because of the over hype and expectations. Honestly all of the concerns everyone has been posting doesnt matter... A good movie is all that matters now and thats it. #InGarethWeTrust

MemberBaragonMay-06-2014 5:50 PM^Well said, Daikaiju_Danielle! :) The concept of a malevolent Godzilla directing his wrath directly at humans would likely not be taken seriously by audiences. It would be like a really ticked off hunter going into the woods and squishing every ant he could find... it might make sense to the hunter for some reason, but its not plausible. Instead, the hunter would ignore the ants he's stepping on while he's hunting the bears that are just as intent on hunting him down. That's far more realistic, and its in the casualties that result from this that the darkenss of the film will come!

MemberBaragonMay-06-2014 6:13 PMOutside of GMK, Godzilla has never truly been evil, even in the original. He was never out to get humans per se, but he's always let us know he's none too happy with his situation. We were responsible for him and he was coming home. I would say he was completely malevolent in GMK; no redeeming qualities. Outside of the later Showa films, Godzilla wasn't good either. Even in the Heisei series, he was tearing s#!t up. Millennium series - Remember the end of Godzilla 2000? He beats Orga and the aliens, then sets the city to burn. Good guy? Bad guy? You tell me. I think this Godzilla is going to be basically the same as the vast majority of Godzillas we know, including '54, except there are other creatures who may be his enemies, and the true baddies.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-06-2014 6:20 PMI totally agree with DAIKAIJU_DANIELLE and DANZILLA93. I mean seriously, What would be the motives for Godzilla coming after people ?...

The-True-Batman
MemberMothra LarvaeMay-06-2014 6:22 PMI see your points. I don't understand the whole dropping nukes on him and not having any backlash from him. Wouldn't he try to find out what his threat is? It also seems from the lines said in the Asian trailer Godzilla is awoken by mankind to fight the MUTOs. That's a little disappointing compared to having him awaken on his own terms and being the first threat instead of the second threat/solution. The MUTOs seem to belittle Godzilla's importance in this movie.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-06-2014 6:35 PMNot specific people. Think about it this way: Humanity is a large hive of insects that are causing nature too many problems. Godzilla is nature's pest control.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-06-2014 7:37 PMFellas:
A good writer can create a reason for Godzilla to attack humainty:
He's tired of man trying to kill him.
Or an archeologist discovered a large egg, and took it back the the US to study it, not knowing that it was Godzilla'a offspring.
Or he is attracted to nuclear power plants and the miltary must stop him.
But Actually Godzilla does not need a reason to attack. Did Cloverfield have a reason to attack? Maybe, but we never found out what is was? Not knowing th reason for the attack isa dramactic subplot in itself.
Don't worry G-fans. Everything will be ok.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-06-2014 8:18 PMEdwards already said that he made the movie that he wanted to make, not, the movie any of us wanted to make. Its not to please any of the fans, but himself really. To a degree, that is the way it has to be. A director makes the movie they want to make. You can't please everyone. Some might want Godzilla to be the "hero" others a "menace" or others "the antihero" etc
There are many things I would have done different. But I am at home drinking tea and typing these words, so i don't have much say:)

MemberBaragonMay-06-2014 8:43 PMWell said Talisman. Of course, the folks behind Godzilla '98 also did it their way and that didn't turn out so well. The point is that so long as it retains a certain "feel" or "trademark" of Godzilla, then its all fine by me. Whether he is good or bad, hero or terror, is of secondary importance.
Speaking of which, I think its been made quite clear that Godzilla is a force of nature in the movie. Not good or evil. Just indifferent to the concerns of human kind. This concept reminds me of those Lovecraftian monsters/deities where Cthulhu and others like him are utterly indifferent to humans.
