Opposition

Something Real

Hello there. I've a simple question I'd like to pose. With all the new information and videos popping up across the site, It's quite obvious that Godzilla is going to have his claws full when it comes to his battles. My interest is in just how much opposition our hero is going to face throughout the film. Will this be a non-stop assault on Godzilla from the MUTO organisms and the military? Is it possible that Godzilla might recieve support in one way, shape or form from mankind once it's evident that his interests are in wiping-out the creatures the "threaten our very existence"? As always, your thoughts and conjecture on this topic are most appreciated, even if you choose to keep them to yourself. :)

Maybe the military will try to kill Godzilla first, then later in the movie, when they realize the MUTOs are a threat too, they will try to kill both. Or the military will see that Godzilla and the MUTOs are enemies to each other and give temporary support to Godzilla to destroy the MUTOs quicker, then they will find a way to destroy Godzilla after. Also keep in mind that there is a "Damaged Godzilla" figure which will mean he will get severe injuries in battle.

Indeed, I've seen the "Damaged Godzilla". I wonder who or what is responsible for inflicting the injuries. I've a feeling it's likely to be the MUTO creatures as I have a doubt that Mankind's weapons are up to snuff. ;)

You are probably right, Something Real. I can't wait to see what kind of "Damage" has been done.

Hopefully the trauma Godzilla sustains will be enough to give us a feel that he's really been injured - but not so catastrophic that he's hobbled. Of course, if Godzilla does become crippled by his injuries close to the film's end but still manages to destroy the MUTO creatures, that's likely to be an awesome seen!

Well, I doubt that the military will try to fight Godzilla at all, since they already tried and failed to kill him wth nuclear weapons in 1954 (unless, maybe, they thought that it did kill him?). I am very confused about how the Mutos will oppose him, since all information seems to indicate that the only monsters other than Godzilla will be one Hokmuto and one winged Muto, which are tiny compared to Godzilla, yet they will be a serious threat to Godzilla's life. These are the only possibilities I could think of:

1.) They will be able to seriously harm Godzilla despite their small size, which would make Godzilla seem like a wimp and not the King of the Monsters.

2.) The Hokmuto is only a juvenile in the Honolulu airport scene and the Mutos are closer to Godzilla's size by the end of the movie.

3.) There will be a lot more than two Mutos.

4.) The monster that threatens his survival and forces him to reappear is something separate from the Mutos.

Those are very compelling theories, LINKZILLA. I happen to believe that the "Ancient Enemy" threatnening Godzilla is something we've yet to see. Thanks for your conjecture! :)

A lot of people seem to be confusing "an ancient enemy" with the word "predator." The likelihood of Godzilla being prey to the Muto's is very small.

However, as for the original question about the opposition Godzilla faces, here are my thoughts:

Godzilla will almost ceratinly face heavy military opposition. The reason I say this isn't because of the TV spots, it's simply because one of our main human protagonists is a soldier. If he wasn't a soldier I would say the military probably wouldn't play in as much, but since he's a soldier there is likely to be A LOT of military opposition.

I'm thinking that the Muto's won't fight with Godzilla nearly as much as everyone seems to think. (Though I am almost hoping I'm dead wrong on that) When he does fight them, it's either going to be a quick battle, or (for Godzilla at least) an annoyingly long one.

All in all, I doubt that Godzilla will ultimately face that much heavy opposition to the point where he doesn't appear to be the King of the Monsters we know and love. I save that weakling stuff for Zilla and the Godzilla animated series where he was taken down by a lot of smaller creatures including some pathetic mutant rats. I mean come on. Rats?

TW_G-FAN2014 - You've a fine set of thoughts here. Indeed, I certainly hope that Godzilla is given his due and not made out to look like a big whimp. That being siad, I also hope he's not made to be completely and utterly unstoppable. If there's no chance that he can be hurt or even weakened a little, there's really no reason for us to be concerned for his safety in the film. Oh, and, yes: I agree that the whole mutant rat thing was dreadful in the extreme. However, you gave this girl quite a laugh by bringing it up; I hadn't thought of that in quite some time! :)

Well, it seems from the looks of recent TV spots that Godzilla can be visibly affected by our weapons, though I highly doubt they'll even leave a scratch. More like a fly that keeps touching you, and you feel it and it's really annoying, with bigger weapons maybe getting a flinch reaction like a mosquito bite that still doesn't show any real damage done. I can only see some huge Muto creature getting in some good hits that'll put the king on edge.

lurker here. (been reading this site for a while. Even talked a bit about the mutos on my blog. So i thought i'd finally get in the ring with the rest of ya)

I hope he gets a run for his money. He is the King of the Monsters and all, but watching him plow through all comers without batting an eye would be boring and get repetive very fast. Would Pacific Rim have been such a fun ride if defeating the kaiju was as easy and routine as the first bout with Knifehead made it look? Having characters and creatures who actually have to fight for their lives makes for entertaining and interesting cinema. After all, it would mean we get to cheer for them when they finally prevail!

Now against the military obviously. As THEGMAN123 pointed out, it apears like our conventional weapons have some effect, though it looks to be more like a minor inconvienance. So naturally Godzilla vs the army would get dull fast. Thankfully he's not against just the army. We have the mutos. What kind of  a threat they will pose is currently up for debate. They don't look like anything that could take Godzilla head on (even if Godzilla was having an off day). Many have suggested the mutos may have a parasitice relationship to Godzilla. Parasites may not be a glamorous as predators, but nature shows us that while they may not win any straight up fights, parasites can can bring even the mightiest creatures low. As with so much about this movie, time will tell what kinda fights were gonna get.

BARUDARROWI - You bring some very compelling thoughts to this discussion. Why on Earth havbe you stayed out of the ring? This girl is more than happy to spar with theories and conjecture! Oh, and welcome to the site, sweetheart! Hope you like it! :)

The parasitic angle is very fair, specially when we compare the first Mutos being much smaller then Godzilla; but in the wild there are creatures considered natural enemies not for having the predator/prey relation, but the competition for survival instead. Think in African lions, they do not get along with other predators, specially hyenas, that's because the presence of them means they need to compete for the food and territory, so the lions tend to attack other predators in order to repel or destroy them in order to have all the stock for themselves.

Good point GOJIRA19. Wolves and coyotes have something similar (though it's usually onsided, in the wolves favor). I'm gonna play devil's advocate and engage in some random, baseless speculation. There has been a lot of hubub about the number of monsters in the film, with 2 being the most often cited. Now, do the film makers mean two monsters period... or two types of monsters? Could be that while we have the two very simlar hocmuto and winged muto, could it be that there are many of them? They could make up for their lack of size and strength with numbers. A single bee sting isn't enough to kill a person (unless they are alergic of course) but killer bees can kill a fulll grown adult because they swarm their victum. It's the same thing with ants, locusts, and even pirahna. Small organisims can humble creatures far larger than themselves because they swarm. Maybe, just maybe, there will be a horde of mutos who swarm Godzilla. Who knows...

I also saw/read some things about military weapons having some minor effect on Godzilla; and the Mutos don't have to be overly large to inflict damage. I believe this version of Godzilla will not go through any and all opposition as easily as he has been shown to do in past movies, he'll have to put some sweat into it. That only makes it more interesting, IMHO.
