Godzilla will be a hero again???

Today I was looking at the programm of a cinema in germany and search for "godzilla" and there was this little text written:

"Die einzige, unwahrscheinliche Hoffnung für die Welt ist das Echsenmonster namens Godzilla, das sich den Ungeheuern in den Weg stellt ... "

translatet into english:

"The last and unexpected hope of the earth is the lizard monster Godzilla who fights against the monsters..."

So the question: Is Godzilla a hero again? Or will he be an antihero?

Godzilla will be a force of nature, not an antagonist or a hero, but an anti-hero. "He's the punishment we deserve".

He doesn't mean to hurt anybody, he just does what Godzilla does. When the MUTOS have risen, the humans use him to their advantage.

I've sort of wondered this as well. I'd like to point out a "dark" Godzilla movie has happened before with Godzilla as the hero. (Terror of MechaGodzilla)

"Dark" is nothing new in the Godzilla genre. If you look at almost all the Showa Godzilla films, I'd say they're far darker than all the heisei Godzilla movies (including Millenium movies as well)

Reasons being simple, the Showa films actually showed death, or at least implied them. All the nineties films really downplayed how many people died, you never heard about it. Honestly the 'darkest' Mill-film was GMK, but even then, it was in a goofy, silly comic-bookish way. Lets not forget that Showa Mothra and Rodan, in their respective films, had higher deathtolls than Godzilla in his original film.

Look at Godzilla vs Hedorah, you see the actually effects of Hedorah's poison. People melt-- they fricken melt. One thing you can say in the films where Godzilla is a 'hero' is that he is more of an anti hero, and at least in that guise, he has a purpose. To me-- that is a lot more interesting than 'big dumb animal happens to accidentally stumble upon world saving battles all the time" ala what the fans seem to want.

He is 350ft Tall people, those things on his neck ARE gills, and the Brazil photo is part of the final advertising design-- Deal with it.

Eh, I don't think on-screen death exactly equates dark. I think that's mostly up to the tone of the film and how it carries specific elements like death. Bambi displayed death as well, that doesn't make it a particularly dark movie.

A lot of people point at Godzilla vs. Hedorah as a dark movie for its death toll and how Hedorah effects humans. Maybe visually, yes it is dark, but atmospherically I don't exactly agree. I do think it's a wonderful and welcomed break in series norm, tone-wise, but it's still mostly fun-- albeit, arguably arthouse fun.

This Godzilla is supposed to be a "force of nature". That can work with or against you. So it all depends on the situation.

Godzilla is the only one that can stop the Mutos. After he destroys them, he'll go back to his normal rampage on humanity as always. :)
