MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-27-2014 2:42 PMHey kaiju fans!
I've watched the latest trailer countless times and I love the tone of the movie...fear, fear of an unstoppable destructive force. But do you think that may hurt the movie? I'm worried that regular cinema audience goers will be expecting that same crash, bang spectacle they were delivered in last years other monster punch fest, Pacific Rim...and wont have the patience to sit through what I expect will be compelling human drama with Godzilla thrown in. I get that same sense of people coming together through adversity and disaster that was portrayed in Gareth Edwards' previous film 'Monsters'...and I respected that, but regular Joe audiences nowadays are more drawn by flashy CGI.
I want this film to be a success and not go the way of Pacific Rim box office wise, I'm just just concerned that people will walk out of the film saying...'meh, all they did was talk, talk, talk...Godzilla didnt even punch anything!'...
Chime in guys!

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-27-2014 3:51 PMwell considering that the main trailer showed that this movie has a good cast, you can't say that the modern audience will dislike it for that, infact it would be bad to have less human drama, the only people who have complained about the human drama are godzilla fans, the general audience will not care if there is more humans, they are the ones who make the story not godzilla or the monster, the monsters are just the plot device, surely the trailer must have brought faith in the human drama and come on, Bryan Cranston is a major character in this, that was what got the general audincese attention in the first place.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-27-2014 4:01 PMBryan Cranston was in the Total Recall remake...and the less said about about that the better, but you make some valid points GodzillaFan1995. I get a 'Jaws' feeling from this Godzilla reboot...we'll get glimpses of the main man, all the while building up the tension to an all-out kaiju brawl between all the monsters of some sort.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-27-2014 4:07 PMalso there have been so much postives comments and reviews on this trailer, even by those who disliked the teaser trailer or weren't convinced that this movie will be good. and yeah since everyone like jaws and this movie uses a jaws technique with godzilla making him both awesome and more terrifying then this movie will surprise and be loved by audiences, any fear i had with this movie was crushed by this trailer, also this trailer had virtually no spoilers and kept secrecy and mystery with the movie, unlike pacific rim and spiderman which gave and has given 90% of the plot of the movie away, pacific rim just gave 100% of the begining and middle of the movie, spiderman gave the premise of the movie and even showed Electro's origin... on the 2nd trailer, that is a stupid move.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-27-2014 4:15 PMsorry i beat you again bigbadben
there are many factors that will make this movie a success
1. mystery of the plot in the trailers (mostly no spoilers)
2. a completly new story in other wrods the fact that this is not a remake
3. good and well known actors as teh main cast, all of them look like they will do a fantastic job
4. godzilla looks like a bad ass
5. the audience now knows that this godzilla is almost indestructable
6. it looks like a godzilla
7. ITS GODZILLA
8. there is more than 1 Monster
9. it looks terrifying
10. it is being promoted by nearly every form of media, from IGN-MTV, from New York Times-The Metro (UK newspaper)

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-27-2014 4:40 PMLYNK: Your argument sort of refutes itself. You say:
1. Godzilla's trailer is making the movie look different from Pacific Rim
2. Audiences want to see another Pacific Rim
3. I don't want to Godzilla to fail like Pacific Rim did.
It's just kind of backwards in that if Pacific Rim failed, that's evidence that audiences DO NOT want to see another Pacific Rim. Therefore, Godzilla separating itself from Pacific Rim is a GOOD thing.
As a side note; technically Pacific Rim didn't fail. It did 'OK'. But I feel your concern, Godzilla needs to do better than just 'OK' if we are going to get a sequel.
To that end, I don't think you need to worry about Godzilla's perception vs Pacific Rim. Nor do I think you need to worry about what people will think AFTER they leave the theatre. I believe most people will like the movie if they go see it.
The big obstacle is getting people to GO SEE IT. In order to get people to see it, Godzilla's main opponent isn't Pacific Rim.....it's Godzillla. Or rather, the general public's perception of Godzilla.
If people are going to see this movie, then we/Legendary/WB have to make people aware of this movie, and let them know that it is going to be unlike any Godzilla movie they have ever seen before. Which the trailer did a good job of that.
Long story short. That trailer helped. It didn't hurt. Godzilla advertising doesn't need to/shouldn't try and dress itself up as Pacific Rim.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-27-2014 4:44 PMHell Toho helped with the movie and is advertising it in Japan, what does that tell you?
I admit that when I was little all I wanted to see was Godzilla but now that I'm older I appreciate the human part as well. I just hope they show enough Godzilla too but the New Traitler gives me so much hope

AdminGodzillaFeb-27-2014 4:55 PMMy faith in this movie is mostly from how audiences have accepted more nerd-driven franchise material as of recent. Iron Man, Captain America and Thor have been fully embraced with the Avengers. Doctor Who is has some crazy mass following now days. Transformers, a geeky toyline, is now one of the most anticipated movie franchises of all time... the list goes on.
I hope that kind of attitude is evident with Godzilla. If so it will be successful. If not... Well, there's always China...

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-27-2014 6:01 PM@Madison Thanks for our reply. I think one of the reasons Pacific Rim did not perform at the box office as well as the studios thought it would was because it was a new property that no-one had heard of. The general audience after seeing trailers and promotional art just cast it off as a Transformers offspring. This is not the case for Godzilla, the last major cinematic release for our favourite king of the monsters (not including Japanese productions) was Emmerichs attempt, and I hope Gareth Edwards will do a 'Christopher Nolan' and reinvigorate the franchise 'a la Batman Begins'...how fantastic would it be if Godzilla became the 'hero that we fear most...but the one we need right now!'...cut to credits...
But you're right, after people watched Pacific Rim and word of mouth spread of how awesome it was, it started to gain popularity (too bad it was beaten by Grown Ups 2 when it was released...really people?)
