The relevance of 1954 and the original film, and how it will play out in the new one

What discrepancies with the original story do you see happening to differentiate this film from the likes of all others that simply used the same story of the 1954 film as a starting point? Also, do you guys believe that some of the characters and the likes from the original film could be represented in the new one in some capacity?
Additionally, I've garnered a few theories based on everything I've seen so far in terms of leaks and official/unofficial info (Please note that the following is pure speculation and in no way endorsed as canon):
This new Godzilla may in fact be the very same as the original one, but in the circumstance that the 1954 story never happened, and now we're seeing him emerge fully for the first time in this new origin story. As well, the new modern-day Serizawa may be a descendant of the original, with the above info pointing towards Daisuke Serizawa never having to sacrifice himself to kill the original Godzilla, thus living on to begin his descendant line with Emiko Yamane, and this serving as an important story element.
