MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-02-2014 1:08 PMwith the upcoming release of the summer blockbuster Godzilla only stomping closer, it could actualy cause a revoloution, with the 30 million plus vews on youtube and worldwide fan base of the kaiju movies, if godzilla does good in box office, not only may we get a trilogy, but a wide rang of new kaiju movies. new american kaiju movies, japan making more kaiju films, and the 2016-2017 pacific rim 2, the kaiju movie genra has a good chance of starting a world wide trend with its success. we might even get a gamera remake and following that, the legendary fight fans has been waiting for.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-02-2014 2:03 PMThat would be great.
and it will stop having the annoying people who take godzilla as something small and childish.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-02-2014 2:04 PMput superhero movies to sleep, no that wont happen, start a revolution and a new wave of popularity for the kaiju genre, most likely.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-02-2014 2:34 PMeeeeeeehhhhhhh probably not this is'nt JAPAN as mutch as i would love to see that happen,By lengendary fight do you mean GODZILLA vs GAMERA??? that should and would NEVER!! happen.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-02-2014 2:44 PMyeah that 'legendary' fight might never happen unless toho would buy gamera which is unlikely.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-02-2014 3:28 PMLOL! Never happen-- Godzilla is not Robert Downey Jr, Godzilla is not Chris Hemsworth.
The only reason Godzilla will do good in theaters is because of its cast. Girls are already wanting to see it because of Aaron Johnson-- and most movie goers in the US are comprised of young girls between ages 10-16.
You'll never tell me those kind of girls have any interest in Godzilla or super heroes and at the end of the day-- quoting an actual girl here 'Avengers had more hotties in it than any film ever. So yeah.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-02-2014 3:33 PMit could happen, nothing is stoping legendary from buying the rights to gamera, but most likley it isnt going to happen, but it is possible the rights to gamera could be bought and be remade, if that happend, i have a felling michael bay or Gareth Edwards would direct it, but still fun to think about

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-02-2014 4:28 PM@AKAGI you say that it is the actors and actress are going to be the 'only' reason that this movie does well, well maybe but you can't say it will be the 'only' reason, the name will help and despite the big names i belive that godzilla will be the main star of the movie everytime he shows up, i can just see reviwers saying that. beside the young girls will be a minority of the audience, you've got moster/kaiju and godzilla fans (who consit of boys and girls), children(possibly) those who grew up having watched at least 1 godzilla movie and and godzilla appeals to non-western audiences audience and also you got bryan cranstons fans. but when those fans of the actor watch the movie, i belive godzilla WILL be the star of the movie, no matter the amont of screen time.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-02-2014 4:35 PMIn all honesty, I'm really, REALLY tired of superhero movies. However, Godzilla will probably not put the superhero movies to sleep.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-02-2014 6:56 PMThat will be cool and I don't known if superhero movies will ever go away. I will love to see a American version of Gamera.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-02-2014 7:09 PMIt won't dethrone Superhero movies for two simple reasons.
1. Superhero movies are popular when th economy isn't good (and it's in the tank right now).
2. Right now when asked what your ideal date movie is, just under 50% of men say superhero movies while over 70% of women say that superhero movies are their ideal date movies. Going to the movies for date night are a big reason people go to the movies and with groups like the avengers and the justice league just getting started there will be no dethroning anytime soon

I'm not sure if you understand how the theatrical market works, but Godzilla fans probably make up a small, maybe 1.2 percent of movie goers/ticket sales-- for a film to do well, it needs to appeal to a massive audience. If you had told me fifteen years ago that Bayformers would have made as much money as it has, I would have laughed at you.
But in the end Shia put young girls asses in seats and Megan Fox put teen boy asses in seats. Before Bayformers, people made fun of transformers, no one knew about it or even cared, now everyone acts like they've always been fans.
Look at King Kong, it had a great team behind it, Peter Jackson's name attached to it, but it didn't have the RIGHT star power. King Kong did so bad in the theaters, I don't think it even made as much money as the Pokemon movie.
No matter how GOOD the Godzilla film is, it won't do well without appeal to the CORE movie going demographic-- which are teenagers.
Anyone who works at a movie theater would testify to the fact that adults over the age of 21 make up a very small portion fo movie goers. Every time I go to the theater I can say the majority of asses in seats are ages 9-17.
So yes, I do think the cast has a lot to do with how well a film does, ask any producer-- they'll tell you that big budget films will always have popular actors in them to guarantee patronage.
Teen girls wouldn't have flocked to Ironman if it was about some fat unknown actor, they wouldn't have flocked to Thor if it wasn't for Chris Hemsworth.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-02-2014 8:04 PM@akagi, do you like to just steorotype young females? Or just generalize everyone? Because there are plenty of movies with attractive casts that didn't do well (LONE RANGER, JOHN CARTER). Yes, cast is important, but it's more than just attraction. Also, FYI, King Kong made $500 million worldwide. Not amazing, but still impressive.
As for if it will put Superhero movies to sleep? Probably not. But it does seem like dinosaurs and monsters are getting popular again. Transformers 4 features dinobots, Jurassic World is coming out next year, and if a new Pacific Rim gets green lit we might well be in for a renewal, or better well put a "renaissance" of Kaiju film. Maybe that Will Smith Ultraman film will happen.

I think you're putting a little too much stock into actors, teen audiences...etc... I don't necessarily disagree with you, but name recognition and good looking actors only go so far. Iron Man came out during the height of the superhero boom with a strong ad campaign, Robert Downey Jr.'s suave power and word of mouth for a great movie. Transformers, granted, had Megan Fox. But Michael Bay's name was recognized before Transformers and his name was used to sell the movie. Fox's was not. Thor had Chris Hemsworth, but he was an unknown at the time. Thor was riding on the success of other successful Marvel movies: Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Hulk...etc... People had caught on that these movies were connected by then.
Word of mouth does a great deal for movies and sometimes a good movie is enough to sell itself. Not always, granted, but it still happens. I don't doubt star power has a lot to do with some movies' success, but some of the examples you're using are a bit of a stretch.
