AdminSpaceGodzillaMay-03-2013 12:00 AMGodzilla's new design for Godzilla 2014 remains a mystery. All we have to go by are the fan renderings which some have attempted to create based on the one and only officially released still of the Monster himself:

Granted, it's hard to divert too far from the classic look of Godzilla, but still fans are meticulous about every detail - legs too big, neck too fat, spikes need to be a certain shape, face needs to not resemble an iguana, etc...
To us hard core fans, the look of Godzilla is extremely important. We have put our faith in the creative team at Legendary to honor the classic Monster which kick started an entire genre of films back in 1954. Godzilla 2014 will be a testament to every Godzilla film which came before it and the groundwork for any to follow. So, there's a lot riding on it. One of the primary concerns fans have are about the look of Godzilla himself.
My question is, do you think Godzilla's new design should remain a secret? Or do you think Legendary should, at some point down the viral marketing road, release what the big G looks like in Godzilla 2014?
Personally I would like to see what he looks like in this new film. But at the same time, I want there to be some (good) surprises when I go see the film on May 16th of next year. So, it's a tough call, at least for me, whether or not I think the studio should show off the new Godzilla design.
What do you think? Let me know your thoughts by responding below.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-03-2013 10:43 AMI think it should be kept close to the chest. Too many times.. movies are ruined simply by revealing too many things about it before it even hits the theaters. In 98.. a zilla toy was prematurely released at a chain of K-mart stores 2 weeks before anyone knew what it looked like.. and it frankly looked stupid.. I know cause I bought it 2 weeks before the movie came out.. I still have the receipt and its still in the box. Did this have an impact on my perception of the movie.. yes. but only because it did not look like Godzilla. NOT to mention the movie sucked moose ballz. What I hope to see happen with Edward's version.. is a glimpse here and there.. a huge shadow cast against a sky scraper.. a roar from hell.. fire and death and gore and screaming.. well.. you get the idea. I am certain that Thomas Tull will not want to ruin this for everyone of us hardcore fans.

Ahaha that quote made me laugh, haha. So true though, I'm hoping they don't release any merchandise which could give away the look of the beast before it's time.
As for your mention of glimpses, I totally agree with you there. I think keeping Godzilla's look a secret could be one of the more powerful tools that can use in the viral marketing campaign. Like you said, have a shadow cast across a skyscraper, or the roar in a teaser trailer, followed by screams, it could all be do very well and very effectively to draw in larger crowds of people next May.
I'm with you, I want to see glimpses, and teases, but no outright photos of the full creature, they need to keep this under wraps for as long as they can. Plus it's fun to see artists speculate on their ideas of what the new Godzilla will look like.

MemberGiganMay-03-2013 3:40 PMI'm happy to wait until the Big G hits the big screen. I think we can be almost certain that Legendary will honour that fine tradition Chris.
@kaiju-seeker glimpses & roars are all we need! I'm totally with you in regards to the element of surprise being taken away by spoiler filled trailers.
Prometheus was shrouded in secrecy, then the trailers gave practically the whole story away!! :-(

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-08-2013 12:45 PMI think that it should be kept secret. I just hope that they keep the form true to the original Godzilla and not lizard like, like zilla 98. I also hope that the atomic breath returns as well.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-10-2013 8:03 AMHe shouldn't be kept secret, everyone knows how Godzilla looks like. Keeping it secret is like keeping Batman's look in a Batman movie secret.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-11-2013 10:36 AMi don't know because i wanna see what he's going to look like but but it will probobly be bad for marketing. plus it's a good idea to keep the fans waiting. it's like a hunger effect. food taste better when your hungry. same goes for godzilla you will be more anticipated to see him the longer you wait.
