Bandai/Tamashii Nations’ S.H.MonsterArts line has had a resurgence as of late, with a busy year of releases focusing entirely on Godzilla himself in various incarnations, including the original 1954 design, the 2001 design, and, of course, all three forms of the King of the Monster seen in this year’s record shattering Shin Godzilla. With so much focus on Godzilla, it was only a matter of time before Tamashii once again returned to releasing non-Godzilla kaiju from the long running series.
While the newest announcement is not a monster new to the line, it does represent a well-deserved second chance for a fan favorite monster, as well as a chance for new collectors to acquire an essential Godzilla villain for their S.H.MonsterArts collection. Not seen since 2013, the final, nightmarish form of Destoroyah, Godzilla’s apocalyptically ultimate opponent from 1995’s epic Godzilla vs Destoroyah will receive a re-release as the Destoroyah: Special Color Version.
Painted to replicate the darker colors of the film’s famous advance poster (seen below), this new version of Destoroyah will also feature film accurate eyes (a fix from the original figure), and will be an all-together more accurate depiction of the creature than Tamashii’s first version. The figure is set to feature four Maser Tanks and four Maser Guns as extras. Sadly, none of Destoroyah’s myriad beam weapons will be included. However, the figure is sure to display brilliantly with Tamashii’s upcoming Ultimate Burning Godzilla figure (as seen above), due out early next year.
Although a price has yet to be confirmed, expect it to be more than the original figure’s $149.99. Despite the high price tag, this is a golden opportunity for fans who missed out on the now out-of-print first release to finally add this terrifying character to their shelves. Destoroyah: Special Color Version bows in North America in March, 2017.
So, what do you think? Will you be adding this figure to your collection? Are those of you who own the original tempted to double dip to get a more film accurate version of the character?
