Pacific Rim vs. Godzilla Monsterverse movie crossover might actually happen.

Next year, Legendary and Universal Pictures will unleash the Pacific Rim sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising to audiences and the year after that Legendary and Warner Brothets will release Godzilla 2 King of the Monsters and then Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020. Since the first Pacific Rim released in 2013 fans have been comparing the two cinematic universes and have been debating on whether or not the two should ever eventually cross over.

For years, the notion was shut down by those behind Pacific Rim because their original intentions for Pacific Rim were to create a completely new and self-sustaining universe which they could build on over time. The creators of Pacific Rim worked hard to keep the film out of the shadows of other high-profile monster movies such as Godzilla. However it would seem interest in such a cross-over has been ignited within Pacific Rim Uprising's director Steven DeKnight.

Speaking to Collider, DeKnight mentioned that this cross-over has been discussed and is a theoretical possibility. Theoretical, being the key word here:

I won’t say there’s an Easter Egg but there’s been a lot of discussion about that possibility [of crossing over]. Look I think it would be fantastic to have the Pacific Rim universe join Legendary’s Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step. And part of the big overall plan after the third movie we’ve talked about is that could happen, it’s always a possibility. It’s by far not a certainty; it’s merely theoretical at this point, but as a fan myself I would love to see that happen.

Now, before we jump to conclusions and assume DeKnight's interest means a cross-over is secured (which MANY news outlets are claiming) we need to look at the hurdles such a cross-over would face.

For one, Toho might not be for it. Remember, there were massive stipulations associated with Legendary, Warner Brothers and Godzilla rights holders Toho to bring Godzilla back to Hollywood. After Godzilla vs. Kong, if Legendary and Warner Bros. wish to continue the Monsterverse they will need to renegotiate a new deal with Toho - a deal which relies on the commercial and ciritcal success of the next two Godzilla movies.

Also, if such a cross-over was to take place, it would require Universal Pictures and Warner Brothers creating a distribution deal of their own, if not establishing a buy-out.

Not to mention, the timelines of the Monsterverse and Pacific Rim universe do not line up at all. A retelling or reboot of Godzilla within a cross-over universe would be required, especially depending on how the trilogy ends with Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020.

Those few points mentioned above plus Pacific Rim Uprising's box office performance and critical reactions will heavily weigh on the liklihood of this cross-over ever coming to fruition.

There are just so many factors at play with such a massive potential cross-over it seems extremely unlikely that the stars will allign in a way to grant such a fan service project. But for the sake of debate, let us know what you think about this possibility in the comments section.

Uh... YES!!!!

Honestly, this idea is not nearly as nuts as it sounds.  Rights and licensing issues notwithstanding, a crossover of the CHARACTERS, not the universes, is highly doable.  The easy solution is to simply insert a NEW Godzilla, unrelated to Legendary's version of the character or any other that currently exists, into a third Pacific Rim film, a sequel to Pacific Rim: Uprising, or potentially a fourth film if the series proves to be that franchise-able.  Godzilla could act as the ultimate kaiju threat to the world, the PPDC and the Jaeger program, a literal "King of the Monsters".  He could even be redesigned to feature the bio-luminescence seen in the Pacific Rim kaiju of the first (and likely the second) film.  A few tweaks, a couple of embeleshments, and BAM!  Crossover potentiality.

Here's another school of thought: including Godzilla might be the thing that secures us a third Pacific Rim movie.  If Uprising performs underwhelmingly, or at least not enough that the studios feel continuing the series would be profitable, the idea of bringing Godzilla in might just make a third film possible.  Godzilla is a highly marketable character, and is in the public eye in a big way these days.  Adding the marquee value of the Godzilla name to the Pacific Rim franchise might be seen as a viable way to continue it.

The same thing almost happened to Hellboy nearly a decade ago: after middling box office for Hellboy II, the idea of having Hellboy fight more recognizable monsters like the Frankenstein Monster, Dracula, and the Wolfman in the third film was briefly discussed.  The idea was quickly dropped, and eventually the film was, too.

In other words, the possibility of Godzilla appearing in a Pacific Rim film won't be seriously considered until Pacific Rim: Uprising hits theaters.  If it is successful enough for a third film to be considered, the possiblity of a crossover will increase both for fans, and maybe for studio executives.

Whst a time to be alive, kaiju fans. :)

Hopefully this happens, seeing how these films will all likely have good profits, I don't see why the companies wouldn't do it.

Please do this!!  Thejaegers would be the new jet jaguar. And the would face off against the alien race itself n their home land.  Bring the fight to them.  Kinda like how they did in monster zero. Just with giant robots and special effects.  #moremonstermoviesplease

I don’t see a crossover working very well but I’d love to see Godzilla in a Pacific Rim movie, unrelated to Legenday’s.

Oh man, imagine a three way brawl between the Precursors' Kaiju, the Jaegers, and the classic Kaiju like Godzilla!

Absolutely bonkers!

IMO... they should remain separate entities. I think an introduction to Gamera in the Pac Rim franchise.. fits better than Godzilla. besides.. The two are not compatible.. given the themes of the two franchises... not to mention the timelines are way off.

If Godzilla had started with the Pac Rim concept in the background.. then maybe.. but they've already built a story line around Godzilla and at this point.. it would be too late to cross the two.

No, keep them separated, but if Jet Jaguar appears then take my money.

I love the idea, but please keep them separated. The timeline doesn't fit in each other films.

As much as I would love to see a crossover between the two franchises, I just cant see it looking good. If they do it then they might go cheap and ask you to forgo the possibility of a stupid sci-fi monster movie mash up than have 2 smart and still entertaining franchises going on at the same time. It might ask too much of the audience to go along with it.

Not trying to say im against the crossover. Im trying to say if we have this "orgy", then we might wake up after its all done and ask why we wanted to have this mess in the first place.
