Tokyo Comic Con provided a monstrous panel for Godzilla: King of the Monsters and director Michael Dougherty. While new S.H. MonsterArts figures for the upcoming film were revealed, the event also gave fans a lot more to chew on!
As Toho has done with the last two live action movies, and the anime trilogy, a new statue representing Godzilla's updated design was unveiled to the public. Of Godzilla's updates Dougherty said,
"These spikes come from the 1954 version. And I made his feet a little bit bigger--He needed bigger claws. Godzilla's spikes are his crown, so they needed to be big."
The 2014 Godzilla design received criticism from some fans for the decidedly elephantine feet and lack of traditional, maple-leaf shaped spikes. But Godzilla's "crown" has definitely returned for the 2019 film. You can see it represented in the new statue below:
Here are all of the Godzilla statues released over the last few years together:
Godzilla: King of the Monsters stars Kyle Chandler (Super 8, Friday Night Lights), Vera Farmiga (The Departed), Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), O'Shea Jackson (Straight Outta Compton), Aisha Hinds (If I Stay), Anthony Ramos (Hamilton), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Randy Havens (Stranger Things), Ken Watanabe, (Godzilla), Sally Hawkins (Godzilla), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), Bradley Whitford (Get Out, West Wing) and Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). The film will be directed by Michael Dougherty from his screenplay co-written by Zach Shields. Alex Garcia is producing.
The film bows May 31st, 2019.
