I haven't watched this movie in a long time. I need to though.
It's definitely in my top 5, along with Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
Wow I saw I put it in my top 5, and had to look at the date.
Not is my top 5 anymore maybe the lower end of top 10 though for it's crazyness. Still an enjoyable movie
Destoroyah is probably the strongest, but you can't really count Biollante out since well she's immortal and consistantly comes back stronger.
Worst, uhhhhh like design or powerwise? Mothra or Battra probably due to the extreme power the other monsters bring and it's made pretty clear Godzilla could deal with both Mothra and Battra if they were alone, and they had some of the worst, most immobile props is the series.
Strongest is probably Ghidorah, with Mechagodzilla being a close second
Weakest is a toss up between Kamakaris, and the Giant Condor, but I hate the Condor so I'll give it to that.
I want to say Godzilla vs Hedorah since it's my least favorite, but it would probably be Godzilla's Revenge for this particular question.
My personal opinion is:
Best Showa Series Godzilla - "Mothra vs Godzilla" (1964)
Best Heisei Series Godzilla - "Godzilla vs Biollante" (1989)
Best Millennium Series Godzilla - "Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla (2002)
And the worst Godzilla of all time - "Son of Godzilla" (1967)
No problem. Welcome to the forums.
Wow - this is just what I was envisioning. Thank you very much!
A unique question. I don't know if a list exists of every 6" Godzilla figure regardless of manufacturer. That's quite an undertaking. But a good place to start would be here: Club Tokyo Godzilla Figures Section
There's even a few different 6" sections under a few of the different toy company names. Hope it helps.
Love this film.
As much as I love King Ghidorah, I don't think his Heisei appearance is very prominent. It's not bad, but after it took 6-to-11 monsters to defeat the Showa King Ghidorah, Godzilla doing it all on his own was a little underwhelming by comparison. I was also disappointed that the Heisei King Ghidorah's movements were not improved upon even though the 1991 film had a budget many times that of Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster, Monster Zero and Destroy All Monsters. Using a stiff prop for a few of the flying shots is inexcusable.
Strength-wise, I suppose I'd give it to Destoroyah who was able to handle Godzilla at his most powerful. But I'm not really fond of the suit and its inability to move.
Personally, Biollante should be awarded for being the first real foe of the Heisei series and for the amazing puppetry that brought it to life. I've always felt it was the most well executed monsters with one of the more inspired backstories.
@Godzilla 2014 Himself: My sentiments, exactly. Godzilla should be a menace, malevolent. The Legendary take was good, almost Gamera-like, as he was here to 'restore balance.' But, with a new director, I would like to see a kaiju that is more scary and frightening.
@KoldWarKid62: An anti-hero Godzilla is great-we've seen it done-but I would just like to see him more unpredictable, more dangerous. There was a moment in Godzilla 2014 when Godzilla and Lieutenant Brody seemed to exchange glances. That kind of characterization went with the general tone of the film. But, personally, I would like to see a film, and, a Godzilla that is edgier, unpredictable, with moments of horror.
I hope Godzilla 2: The King of the Monsters is shocking and wild.
I really need to watch these movie again.
Tamblyn did mail it in! But WOTG is still one of my all time favorites. I'd love to get a pristine subtitled Japanese version on Blu-Ray.
^Nor have I, actually. It might be an interesting experiment, but I already find Frankenstein Conquers the World stronger than War of the Gargantuas. I don't know if a back-to-back viewing will do it any favors--Especially when you compare Adams to Tamblyn...
@GMan2887 - Good analogy! I've never watched them back to back. That may be a plan sometime soon. Always a bonus to see Kumi Mizuno in her prime!
@Jamaal - As much as I’d love to see that happen, I don’t see them changing his “character” that drastically. They’ve already established him as, if not an anti-hero, then certainly not a malicious monster. It would take real cojones to turn around and make him scary and/or bad. I’d love to see that classic military versus Godzilla scene, as opposed to him being shot at and basically ignoring the military altogether.
If we’re lucky enough to get to it, I envision he and Kong going at it initially, but then uniting against some common foe, a la Batman V Superman, with neither character necessarily being the antagonist, or “bad guy”.
Either way, I’m looking forward to this, and I already have my ticket purchased for Kong: Skull Island (7:30 pm, 3/9).
@Jamaal Same, I'm wanting a Godzilla who'll destroy buildings and fight the military.
The King of the Monsters - made an excellent point that I hadn't considered. I figured it simply was an attempt to appeal to the American audience. I never made the Kong connection. Thanks The King of the Monsters. :)
Just an attempt to cash-in on the De Laurentiis King Kong remake.
As an avid King Ghidorah fan, especially the Showa version, I can hardly argue against the three headed king of terror. Although one could make an argument that perhaps Hedorah or MechaGodzilla were tougher, I don't think either had the same amount of charm and insanity as the unhinged King Ghidorah. (Although he was looking worse for wear in Godzilla vs. Gigan and Zone Fighter.)
Otherwise I'd say Kamakaris is the least memorable, though I have massive respect for the critter these days due to the incredible puppetry and wirework.
Well it's certainly not something that would be made today.
The connections between these two movies have always confused fans--Especially with the different cuts of Frankenstein Conquers the World floating around. My take on it is that Frankenstein Conquers the World relates to War of the Gargantuas in the same way Evil Dead relates to Evil Dead II.
There's a lot of retconning going on and it doesn't seem like War of the Gargantuas was made to adhere strictly to Frankenstein Conquers the World's cannon. So since the two films are "sequels" at heart, but only loosely connected, I don't think the Giant Octopus in the latter film was intended to be the same creature. I think Tsuburaya just loved the creature so much it was hard to resist not throwing it in again.
@KoldWarKid62
"I wouldn't mind if they tweaked it a bit. Looking forward to Dougherty's take."
Me too. I'm starting to get more interested in the whole project. Two years can go pretty fast. With a new director, one would hope there will be a markedly different direction. I would like to see a Godzilla who doesn't allow the US Navy to escort him across the ocean. Scary is what I want to see. So it should be reflected in the design. With all those airborne giant monsters, the potential for monumental chaos is immense. I'm thinking King Ghidorah has to be a bad guy. And he should be huge, overwhelming.
Yep. Starting to get Godzilla 2 fever.
Thank you for all the responses - we will be closing the results now and prepping for the episode. Look for it sometime in the next month or so!
Since they're using the title "Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters" (which is great, IMO), a scene of Steve Martin-like on-the-scene-reporting might be a nice homage. Especially so if the design bares a definite resemblance to the 1954 version.
Just thinking out loud from over 700 and some odd days out.
I liked the GarethGoji (or whatever it's being called). But, with a new director some tweaking might be interesting, especially if Godzilla is portrayed differently. I've always loved this:

I would love to see the ShodaiGoji recapitulated, using the latest VFX.
Just having more Godzillas appear would be a cop-out and take away from the importance of Godzilla as a character in my opinion. I'm all for maybe showing flashbacks of other members of his kind or maybe having a juvenile in the vein of Minilla or Godzilla Junior appearing, but not just suddenly introducing more Godzillas that look slightly different just to reestablish Godzilla with a new design. If they really want to change Godzilla's design, they can just do it and not worry about explaining it, since Toho has done the same thing countless times in the past.
Honestly was it ever confirmed in the last film that the Godzilla shown was the last of his kind? If not there could be 2 or 3 more still left. Can be used as a way to have a slightly different design.
One of the best of any of the Godzilla series. I love the scene where Mecha-King Ghidorah levels the city on top of Godzilla. Excellent film.
This film, along with "Godzilla's Revenge", in my opinion are the abyss of the Godzilla films. I haven't watched either of them since I saw them on TV in the 1970's. That being said, I do acknowledge that they are good entries for very young children to watch.
Hands down the answer is: KING GHIDORAH (from any of the series). We can only imagine how much more formidable he would be if he only had arms!
For me it is all about Godzilla's roar. I can't get enough of it. It is my ringtone on my phone and I uploaded it to my laptop as the alert for an incoming message.
I loved the whole package! Giant monster battling great looking models of real fighting vehicles and imaginary fighting vehicles (my favorite was the Maser) and then facing off against at least one other giant monster (my favorite was Ghidorah from the very beginning).
The first time I was allowed to stay up past my bedtime when I was a child was to watch "Godzilla vs The Thing" (aka "Godzilla vs Mothra") on a Saturday night episode of Creature Feature which was broadcast over my hometown's local UHF station.
One of my fondest memories was when my grandfather took my older brother and I to see "Godzilla vs Megalon" at the theater when it was released in the United States (1976).
Entering my teenage years I lost interest when I discovered girls and the "cooler" things to entertain myself.
When I got out of the Army in 1992 I stumbled against "Godzilla vs Biollante" in my local video store and was curious. After watching it the first time that night, I ended up renting the video cassette seven days straight and watching it at least twice every night after work.
I'VE BEEN HOOKED EVER SINCE!
@Gman2887 agreed. I feel like if they tried hard enough they could make an even better design.

I tend to agree with the feeling that my top 5 to 10 and my bottom 5 to 10 are pretty much accurate with the middle rankings in a somewhat fluid state.
I'm all for tweaking the design. It's by no means a perfect design and Godzilla's look has changed from move to movie before anyway. Go for it.
Well that kindof destroyed the name for the M.U.T.Os from G14 because now MUTO is just a term from Monarch and not a real name like how Godzilla is Godzilla.
Already got my ticket for Thursday the 9th at 7:30. Then, the family and I will be seeing it that Saturday. Can't wait.
