I see that there has been a change in the wording in the description of the special features on the Shin Godzilla Blu-ray/DVD being released by Madman Entertainment:

https://www.madman.com.au/catalogue/view/39478/shin-godzilla-bluray

I've emailed them for clarification: will they still be subtitled? Do the 'outtakes' include the previously listed 'behind-the-scenes' and 'making-of' features?

I wish it was possible to special order discs with features one could request, for a price, of course.

After looking at the list of the voice actors and reading about their past work, I must say that I'm a little intrigued about the English dub for Shin Godzilla. The dub and the digital version are strong reasons to get the Funimation release even if you already have the film. Although, with the exception of Monster Zero, I prefer subtitled to dubbed, this release looks to be a quality dub from a company that's good at it. The box art is beautiful and hopefully the picture will be sharp. And who knows, perhaps "Godzilla vs. The Nerds" will be memorable.

Or not.

Although I'm disappointed with aspects of the pending Fumination release of Shin Godzilla, I am also grateful for their releasing this film in theaters last year. That theatrical run was perhaps the most enjoyable time I've had as a fan. There is simply nothing like seeing Godzilla on the big screen, especially with an audience that is knowledgeable and engaged. I hope their release sells well and fans benefit from the English dub and enjoy the trailers. However, I think this a missed opportunity of sorts, especially given the critical and commercial success of Shin Godzilla in Japan, and here, as well. Having a digital version of the film is also a major plus. But, all things considered, a release that includes revealing special features and enjoyable extras has to be seriously considered.

Glad to see a Stateside release but definitely disappointed that the extra content for this release is incredibly lackluster

G.H. (Gman):

What you say makes perfect sense. It's just that the interview with Paul Fruge' of Funimation over at Toho Kingdom last year gave me some hope for some decent, not extravagant, but decent, entertaining features, especially for a film like Shin Godzilla. He said during it, "So we will have some special features that the Japanese have on theirs and some we won't. It really depends on what we're able to get our hands on, what they're willing to share, and or what we're willing to add ourselves for the US release."

Fruge' said that they would have some features that are on the Toho release. I don't see this on the Funimation release as advertised. His saying this last year gave me the impression that there was some understanding with Toho about the materials that would be available. Maybe there was but it all fell apart at some point. Anyway, the dub with all of those voice actors looks to be very good. And there will be a digital version. So, these are two good things about the Funimation release. I'm looking at the Madman release mainly for the promise that there will be some nice, revealing special features, and that they will be subtitled. I have the Toho 3-disc set, and the extras are copious, but there are no subtitles. I want to know what Hideaki Anno was saying to the staff and crew at the onset of production, etc. I realize the announced features are to be confirmed, but Madman did list them, so I'm hopeful.

Jamaal,
I share your disappointment, but at the same time I'm not at all shocked by this. Ever since the Media Blasters disaster with Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla vs. Megalon, Toho has been on lock down in terms of special features for their films.Either they're asking too much for the material or have blatantly refused to share it with North American distributors.

Additionally, I've been educated on how Toho likely holds a grudge against North American distributors--A grudge spanning all the way back to the Saperstein days. Long story short when Toho found out the US was making more money on their films than they were, prices went up: Distribution rights. Photos. Names. Character designs.

Making Toho budge without a lot of dollar signs is like trying to fish without a line.

An interview and trailers?

Really?

How about some making of, behind the scenes, SFX/VFX footage? Other releases are apparently going to have these.

I would rather hear from the filmmakers and actors, the artists, than from 'fandom personalities.'

Thank God for region-free DVD players.

"The exclusive is said to include various personalities in the Godzilla fandom."

This, is what the Godzilla vs. The Nerds interview featurette is going to offer

In contrast, the release Region B Blu-ray/Region 4 DVD release by Madman Entertainment in Australia will have the following special features:

Behind the Scenes                                                                   Making Of                                                                               Animation Tests & Storyboards                                             SFX Featurette

https://b2b.madman.com.au/actions/catalogue.do?method=view&releaseId=39478

And, according to an email I got from Madman, these features will be subtitled.

Funimation is offering a dub and a digital version, but, for my money, the Madman release has a lot more to offer.

Finally! While I'll admit it is kinda disappointing it isn't getting as many special features as the Japanese version (I would have loved some deleted scenes and more) but at least I can finally have Shin Godzilla and my Godzilla movie collection will once again be complete.

JamaalShin-Gojira ForumWhen does Shin Godzilla come out on DVD/BluRay?

The Funimation Blu-ray/DVD release of Shin Godzilla will apparently have two special features: an interview, "Godzilla vs. The Nerds," and trailers:

https://www.funimation.com/shop/home-video/shin-godzilla-movie-bddvd-combo-uv-bld-00531/

In contrast, the Blu-ray Region B/DVD Region 4 release by Madman Entertainment will have the following special features:

Behind the Scenes, Making Of, Animation Tests & Storyboards and SFX Featurette:

https://b2b.madman.com.au/actions/catalogue.do?method=view&releaseId=39478

Funimation will have an English dub along with an Ultra Violet digital version. But Madman has the better features in terms of enhancing the enjoyment of the film. And, Madman told me in an email that these special features will be subtitled. Therefore the experience will not be purely 'visual' as it is with the Toho released discs. Personally, I'm looking forward to the features on the Madman release in terms of insights into how the filmmakers approached this seminal Godzilla film. An English dub is nice and a digital version is handy, but what Madman is offering is, to me, more valuable.

I'd love to see a remake of Biollante, Destoroyah and Orga, maybe in a leter movie. I think it would be super cool if they where able to have Gigan take a part as a Pacific Rim Kaiju, and have him dominate the Jaegers sent against him.

Godzilla vs Hedorah is my least favorite Godzilla movie, but it's clear that Banno had a lot of love for this franchise and its characters.

So RIP Banno, I didn't agree with your movie but I still have a lot of respect for the work you put into one of my favorite franchises.

Let's see....

For Kong against Godzilla, I definitely wanna see the giant ape use his surprising amount of agility, speed, and creativity to make up for Godzilla's raw power and durability.

I also wanna see Mothra and Rodan have an aerial tussle, since the two look to be around the same size and could have interesting dogfights. Heck, have them both take to the skies against King Ghidorah!

I'd like to see Ghidorah as an alien.  I'd like to see a large mix of new monsters as well as old.  Speaking of old, I'd like to see Varan, Destoroyah, Gigan, and maybe even Orga thrown in, and even though I am kind of finding him boring in the Toho movies nowadays, I really wouldn't mind seeing MechaGodzilla introduced at some point.  It would be neat to have a post credits scene that shows him under construction, teasing an upcoming battle.  I would also like to see some monsters that aren't necessarily Toho related, like Gorgo.  I think he could be a cool monster to see in a Godzilla film.  I think the Gargantuas would be neat to see in a Kong film.  As my want for an alien Ghidorah implies, I would like to see some alien involvement in the films.  Doesn't have to intelligent aliens, maybe just alien monsters.

I'd like more realism chucked out the window in favor of the fantastical. Just like the slow progression into over-the-top insanity the Showa series went through. Or the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This is a great topic (upvoted)! You mentioned a lot of what I'm hoping for as well.

Without a doubt we need some amazing areal shots of Rodan and Ghidorah. We also need to believe how much of a threat Ghidorah is, so seeing him dominate Godzilla I agree is a must.

In terms of Godzilla vs. Kong, yeah I can see Kong being confident enough to run head on at Godzilla. That brawl is going to be incredible, I really can't wait to see that unfold on the big screen.

Beyond those few points I too would like to see cameos and reference to other Toho monsters. Varan and Baragon could fit into the Hollywood mythos seeing as their origins and organic nature would make it easy to write them in, opposed to Gigan or Megalon. Although, I would LOVE a Legendary Gigan... I realize how unrealistic it is to assume he'll ever be included. Haha

I honestly never knew that he started the MonsterVerse. Without him, we wouldn't have Shin Godzilla, the anime, and other yet to be future Godzilla movies.

I actually am one of the ones that enjoyed Godzilla vs. Hedorah. Sad though he never got to see his dream of a sequel to happen. He very clearly though was a passionate fan of Godzilla and always will be.

Rest in peace Yoshimitsu Banno.

You will be missed.

RR44,
Geez, you really dug this out of mothballs. I think the point is moot now since we know Borenstein is no longer the lead writer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters--In fact he may not be credited at all anymore. I don't know.

Michael Dougherty is the one who wrote the script, so at the moment I'm just relieved it wasn't Borenstein who took charge of Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

RR44Shin-Gojira ForumMax Borenstein Interview Says Godzilla 2 will be Bigger and Better

Remember this too.. Godzilla 2014 movie was a roll of the dice. They did not put a lot into it money wise.. for if by chance it was not well received by the movie goers at large.. then WB could at least break even. But it did do well.. and it was enough to give them a green light for more. Also.. the amount of CGI required for the sequel.. is going to be huge.. and costly. But the Avengers used a ton of CGI which required a crap load of cash.. and it did way better than expected. So if WB wants to create a monster verse.. they are going to have to spend the big bucks to to make G KOM.. something people will go to the theater twice to see because it is just too cool to only see once. In my opinion.. this Showa style approach to the new Godzilla.. has the potential for massive success in the box office. Maybe Borenstein  is being honest.. when he says bigger better. He's an ok screen play writer.. but everyone learns from experience and learns to improve. I hope that's the case with him. Also.. he is now a part of what is making this all happen.. he is not going to want to be known as the guy who killed this franchise. in my opinion.

that's just fine and all.. but there needs to be more info on the second movie. It seems like there is more focus on the third. Hopefully they will surprise us with the G sequel.. and it will be so awesome.. that people will beat a path to the theaters to see the third one.. with Kong. Kaiju films today.. should dominate the big screen.. because of all the years that have past and all the ways that improvements can be made in making a giant monster flick even better than in days of old. in my opinion.

Something of an "honorable mention" I suppose, but I always felt that Sato's best Godzilla theme (he always wrote a new one) was from Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla. I wish he was given the chance to develop it further--After three attempts at Godzilla he really nailed it here.

It's extremely overlooked and most fans don't even recall it. I think it serves as an excellent foil to the big-band style score, fitting Godzilla very well. Take a whirl:
