Huge-BenGodzilla ForumMonster-verse after Godzilla vs. Kong

Except the fact that Godzilla attacked the U.S.S Lawton in 1943 as provided by Randa in Kong Skull Island. I mean, he apparently attacked the ship for no reason unless there was a purpose behind it. Yes, 2014 depicts Godzilla as a hero, but thanks to Kong Skull Island, it seems he's not so much a hero, especially after attacking a ship for seemingly no reason. Randa did say "I saw what I saw. It had no conscious, no reasoning. Just destroy."

I'll agree that it appears the contract may expire after 2020 with Godzilla vs Kong. But, it may also depend on what Toho wants to do. I even think it depends on how successful these next 2 films are.

I really don't understand this fascination with a film to end the MonsterVerse where Godzilla is suddenly the villain and fights no other monsters. As far as I see it that would be a complete regression, both for the film's marquee value and the MonsterVerse's portrayal of Godzilla. The MonsterVerse is characterized by monsters battling other monsters, and that is a major part of its box office draw. Making a film with none of that would be a confusing move on Legendary's part. Sequels tend to escalate the stakes and premises, not scale them back. Sure Shin Godzilla is a successful film that follows that formula, but it's a very different film from G14 and has a reason for being a solo Godzilla film. Making a solo Godzilla film in the MonsterVerse would just be, for lack of a better term, anticlimactic.

Second, it would make no sense from a narrative standpoint. The MonsterVerse Godzilla is a force of nature that has no interest in combating humanity. The film goes out of its way to portray him in a noble and sympathetic light, and proves humanity could not hope to defeat him even if it wanted to. Monsters like Godzilla and Kong are the "heroes" of the MonsterVerse, the audience is meant to root for them. The entire point is that they are forces beyond humanity's control that they cannot hope to destroy or contain, and humanity simply has to stand back and let them keep order. Having a film where Godzilla is suddenly the villain and gets defeated or killed by humanity defeats the entire purpose of this version of the character. Future films could certainly pit Godzilla against humanity to some extent and illustrate that he is indeed dangerous to them, but in the end he is still the only hope for overcoming more dangerous creatures and cannot be brought down by humanity's resources.

I see no reason for a solo Godzilla film in the MonsterVerse. It would do nothing to increase the series' appeal, and would make no sense from a narrative standpoint. I'm not against solo Godzilla films or anything, in fact I think making Shin Godzilla a solo film was a great idea, but I'm completely against one in the MonsterVerse. Besides, I get the impression from Higuchi's remarks at G-Fest that Legendary's rights to Godzilla expire after Godzilla vs. Kong and Toho has no intention of re-licensing them. We likely won't get any more MonsterVerse films featuring Godzilla after Godzilla vs. Kong, though that certainly isn't set in stone.

Spider-Man and Black Panther got/are getting solo movies after being introduced in Captain America: Civil War. I think there's many reasons why a solo Rodan or Mothra film won't happen, but it won't be simply because they were introduced in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

WillnotbenamedGodzilla ForumWhat is that creature studied by Monarch in Siberia?

I would rather something like Bagarah (but I wouldn't even bet a single penny on it) as the creature in Siberia.

Or maybe even that centipede like place holder creature that showed up in the 2012 comicon trailer for Godzilla 2014. It would be a shameful waste just to ignore such a potential creature design.

It would also be nice to see Biollante or Destroyah as the Kaiju in Siberia.

Wonder when (or even if) the creature in Siberia will be revealed?

I like the Idea of Legenndary ending with a classic Godzilla vs the military film.

Nice list, Kaiju Psycho, but I really don't think we need a Mothra or Rodan film since they are being introduced in the next Godzilla movie. If they were going to make them it should have been pre 2019.

I don't think we need another Kong movie either. You don't need a solo Kong movie after GvK since they will most likely become allies. To each their own though.

Post 2020 I would like to see a Destroy all Monsters with Kong, and Godzilla fighting together. The more villians the tougher Kong and Godzilla look. I say in DAM let all the other monsters die, including Kong. Godzilla gets so mad he kills all the other monsters. Kinda like when Obi wan goes on that rampage on Darth Maul when Qui-gon dies.

After that I would only want one more movie, in which Godzilla would go on a rampage to destroy the world. Where hummanity has pissed him off to the point of no return. They would have to kill him with the Oxygen Destroyer, putting an end to the Monster-Verse in the best way possible.

Would pay perfect homage to the original Godzilla and would most likely be an instant classic. I'd also like to see him make quick work of a monster, showing how powerful and pissed he really is.

^There was the Skull Island walkthrough. The MonsterVerse did make a prominent appearance, it was simply for a movie that's been released and not an announcement at a panel.

If Kong gets his big arms around Godzilla's neck.. he could choke him to death... provided Godzilla doesn't beat Kong to death with that massive tail. In Edwards movie.. that tail was more than a formidable weapon.. He hit that MUTO so hard against the building.. that building came down upon him. NOW THAT'S POWER!

Kong's main advantage is his limberness.. but as he gets bigger.. he might slow down.

Godzilla's advantage is His breath.. obviously.. but he is a brawler when he fights.. You can see that in the PS4 game. He get in your face and is relentless... but Kong thinks.. and I see this new KK vs G movie as being a pretty even match. And I still think they're gonna go with the B vs S approach. Ghidorah too.. is formidable and may survive the next flick to fight in KK vs G in 2020.. and I still say the battle will be on skull island.. due in part to that cave painting we saw in Skull Island after credits scene. Think about it.. giant skulls.. Godzilla.. King Ghidorah.. all in one picture.  Yeah.

King of the Monsters - thanks for the extra info! I am very curious to see if they'll ever call him "King Kong" in the movies, maybe once he grows some more and is a match for Godzilla? Or if it just a weird legal thing, I suppose we'll all just have to wait and see.

And I agree, it seems kind of lame there's pretty much nothing about the MonsterVerse at the con, or even much for the upcoming Pacific Rim sequel. It comes out in barely half a year, this would have been the perfect time to debut a (real) trailer or some footage. And Pacific Rim is on even shakier ground than the MonsterVerse, they could have really used the boost. Too bad.

Godzilla

Advantages: Atomic Breath, heavier, bigger, more durable and more experiences.

Disadvantages: Shorter arms, slower, Kong's superior speed could give Goji a problem.

Kong

Advantages: Faster, more agile, longer arms, smarter(Not saying that Goji is dumb), and can use tools to his advantages,

Disadvantages: Lacks projectiles, smaller, not as durable, and Godzilla's Atomic Breath would do damage to Kong.

I think this battle could be fair as long Kong can dodge Godzilla's Atomic Breath.

What we got as far as Godzilla/Monsterverse stuff is about what I expected. I'm still disappointed that we got no PR2 trailer. I know the director says it's not ready, but they should have had the forethought to be ready. A Comic-Con reveal gets your movie's name in the head of a lot of people and the teaser we did get was weak.

I can already tell she'll be a beautiful Goddess. I love that she has the circle pattern in her wings, a design present in every incarnation of her imago form. Can't wait for more.

The dynamic will probably be Godzilla having size and power whereas Kong has youth and speed.

I don't think there's much of a chance of Kong being bigger than Godzilla. He's only less than a third of his size as it stands now, and I could see him maybe growing to 250-300 feet by 2020, but I don't see how they'd make him grow larger than Godzilla. Even in the original King Kong vs. Godzilla he was a little shorter than Godzilla. Kong will be the underdog against Godzilla, I don't think there's much chance that he won't be. Godzilla will have the size advantage, but Kong will be forced to rely on his other strengths to compete with him.

This is a lot less change than I was expecting. Granted it is only a stone sculpture, so maybe it doesn't really show all the differences they made.

Legendary has used the name "King Kong" in marketing for the film, just not to a great extent. Obviously the film is just called Kong: Skull Island and the character is just referred to as "Kong" in dialogue, but he is rarely if ever called "King Kong" by characters in any of the American films. The Japanese version of the film is titled "King Kong: Giant God of Skull Island" and all of the Japanese marketing elects to call him by his full name of "King Kong".

Some of the American marketing for the MonsterVerse still calls him "King Kong" though. Legendary's press releases for the Skull Island: The Birth of Kong comic refer to it as "the story of King Kong," and one of the tracks on the film's soundtrack is called "King Kong." The FunKo Pop! vinyl figure of Kong from the film is also called "King Kong" (it has a "tm" symbol next to it also, which is odd because I am unsure who, if anyone, actually owns the trademark to Kong's name). Not to mention, the film and marketing also tend to frequently refer to Kong as a "king."

There may very well be some weird thing with Universal that prevents Legendary and WB from using "King Kong" prominently in the titles or marketing from the film, but it's also possible Legendary is just trying to set their Kong films apart from previous ones by avoiding using "King Kong" in the titles. Skull Island is meant to be the story of "how Kong became King," so it's possible he hadn't yet earned the full title of "King Kong."

Very cool! Really looking forward to seeing more of Mothra, as she's always been one of my favorites.

I guess it should still be taken with a grain of salt as to whether this will really be what she'll look like in the final film or not, or if this is just early teaser stuff. But if this is her official silhouette from the film, it's interesting that overall she looks the most here like she did in GMK.

I wonder if Mothra will have any beam or energy-type weapons in the film, or if she'll be purely physical? The Heisei series Mothra and especially the Rebirth of Mothra incarnations all had lots of impressive energy weapons, which actually made Mothra a very powerful combatant, which allowed her to more easily go toe to toe with enemies like Godzilla and King Ghidorah. But then in the Millennium-era movies there seemed to be more of a push to return Mothra to more old school roots, with just hurricane winds, stingers, poison powder and the like.

And of course, I also have to wonder if Mothra might die in this new movie, since she's traditionally the Sean Bean of Toho kaiju.

Hmm, thanks NateZilla. It sounds like Universal can be almost as anal/protective about things as Toho themselves (almost)!

I guess it will be very interesting to see if Kong is ever upgraded to "King Kong" at any point later on or not.

You know what'd be kind of hilarious? If Mothra was worshiped as a Goddess of WAR by the ancient Chinese due to how, well, DESTRUCTIVE a giant moth that can generate hurricane winds from the beating of her wings would be.

I wouldn't be too sure about "Goddess of PEACE" just yet there, buddy. The plot so far is that it's a free-for-all, and those generally aren't very peaceful :P
