Very true to her design and not "controversial" so far. ;)

Hopefully the end result will be the creature we all know and love.

Oh man........... IT HAS BEGUN.

It's just a sculpture, so this obviously isn't our final final look, but it's a good tease. That, and it actually resembles the cave paintings pretty well from the post-credits scene from Kong: Skull Island.

Well this past Wednesday was the first Wednesday in three weeks we didn't get a Monarch Timeline video. Either something is being saved for Comic Con (or we already got it in the form of the Skull Island walk through) or they're spacing things out from now on. Warner Bros. has a panel today in a few hours--We'll see.

Universal has a weird way of letting you use their characters without a major deal.

For instance, when Hotel Transylvania was made (you know, that comedy animation by Sony Pictures?), Universal let them use their monsters on really weird stipulations such as Frankenstein not being able to have his metal screws on his neck, Frankenstein's Bride not being able to have the lightning bolt streak in her hair, and Dracula not being able to have the classic Dracula haircut. There were more, but that gives you the basic idea.

Not naming the character "KING Kong" might be another weird rule put on by Universal. Only time will tell, however.

Hi guys, I have a question for those who may be in the know. Sorry if this is off-topic from SDCC, but since you guys are discussing Kong and the rights around him and all, I wanted to ask: Is there a legal reason that the full name "King Kong" never seems to be used for the MonsterVerse stuff?

I can't help but notice that the title of the new Kong movie is just "Kong", no "King Kong". Likewise, throughout the movie, characters only ever call him "Kong". He's called a "king" and such a few points, but at no point are the two words ever used together, and no one ever calls him "King Kong" in the whole movie. Similarly, I know it's still in early pre-production and all, but from everything I've seen and heard, the upcoming rematch film is always called "Godzilla vs Kong", again, it's like they're avoiding using the full name of "King Kong". Is there a reason for this that anyone knows of, or am I just reading way too much into it all?

Regarding the anime films, I think technically Polygon isn't producing the film per se, they're just handling the animation. Toho Animation is technically being credited as the company producing it. I suppose it means Toho is handling all aspects of the production outside of the animation itself. The fact that the films are animated gives me the impression that they're the result of Toho essentially exercising a loophole in their contract with Legendary. Toho wants to capitalize on the success of Shin Godzilla, but can't produce another live-action film until 2020. It's a somewhat clever move on their part.

In regards to the whole legal debacle surrounding Kong, I',m not sure if Universal and Legendary signed some kind of formal deal, or if Uuniversal just sort of let Legendary go through with putting Kong in the MonsterVerse since the companies are production partners currently and have plenty of other projects up and coming together. Universal's "ownership" of Kong is pretty loose, and they aren't able to license the character the same way Toho or Kadokawa would Godzilla or Gamera. I'm not completely clear on how the Kong situation really shakes down, and there are others online who are much better informed on it than I, but the impression I get is that Universal is just letting Legendary do as they please with Kong, knowing actual legal negotiations over the character rights would get messy and probably not be worth it, and expecting a return on investment through their future endeavors with Legendary. Warner Bros. themselves have some kind of claim on Kong as well, owning the rights to the 1933 original and Son of Kong at least in North America, and having distributed the 1976 remake on DVD as well. WB also released all three animated Kong films, for whatever that's worth. I'm sure Universal has gotten paid for Legendary's moving of the project in some way, but probably not in some formal licensing deal. I haven't seen Universal credited in any way in any Kong: Skull Island releases or merchandise.

Sorry if that was kind of off-topic, but I was just trying to offer my input.

I'm personally hoping that SDCC 2017 will unveil an official coining of the MonsterVerse. Obviously, viewers know it's a thing, and the marketing has been making it clearer bit by bit, but it's not officially "THIS IS THE MONSTERVERSE, EVERYONE!" like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, at least in spirit.

Maybe alongside the Kong: Skull Island stuff, Legendary will announce that the MonsterVerse as a whole is taking off and is now a thing to watch alongside the MCU and DCEU.

To sum up, it's not JUST a boiled down list of "X survived this whilst Y didn't", or "X lost here whilst Y didn't".

Power can be attributed to many different facets of each individual Godzilla, and not always in clear-cut ways. Heck, breaking down the physics of it all is challenging enough in and of itself, since showings that SEEM impressive might not actually be so upon further dissection, and vice versa.

For example, that black hole in Godzilla VS. Megaguirus isn't a true black hole, since it clearly didn't behave like one. If it did, Earth would've gone POOF, or at least Japan, so we have to judge its gravitational singularity based on what we DID see it do, which isn't too different from a nuclear detonation in terms of destructive potential.

That's just one example, one in which context and proper knowledge go hand-in-hand in these fictional debates. If my time at Spacebattles has taught me anything, you gotta dig deeper before you make the call.

@GMan.   Right; G2014 came back after the double teaming stopped. My point is that many Godzillas do not fare well when double teamed. G2k got double teamed and suffered for it, KiryuGoji got double teamed and only started coming back once either Mothra or Kiryu was down, ShowaGoji got double teamed on multiple occasion and never fared well with it, G2014 didn't do well of course when double teamed, and even HeiseiGoji didn't do well when he was double teamed by Mothra and Battra. Heck, the instant they teamed up to stop him, he lost. The only Godzillas that have been double teamed and didn't seem to be bothered by it was GMKGoji and FinalGoji. That's it. All the others got kicked and tossed around until it was one on one again.

The MUTOs are pretty serious adversaries. Sure they aren't up there with the likes of King Ghidorah, Destoroyah, or Biollante, but they could easily take down a number of Toho Kaiju like Baragon, Anguirus, Ebirah, Kumonga, I can see them taking down Orga, etc. Heck their EMPs alone render any Mecha useless (and probably Gigan too cause cybernetics), so that means even the likes of MechaG and MechaKG would probably go down if they fought them.

My point is that the Godzillas in these movies did not fight adversaries that were equal in strength all together; not to mention the two that never had an opponent at all. Shin too seems to be universally ranked sort of low according to many, and yet he easily has the most powerful atomic capabilities of all the Godzillas considering his breath's lightsaber-like qualities. That's something even BurningGoji would have a really hard time with.

My sentence there in an earlier comment seems to have gotten cut off. I'm saying that it's easy to do a list off the top of the head, but to be more accurate, we would have to look into more stipulations and consider more input than just "well this Godzilla did this thing this one time" or "this Godzilla survived this".

Anyone who says the Mutos are tough need to watch Terror of Mechagodzilla, GMK, Godzilla 2000, you can use basically any Toho movie and pin G '14 and I'm afraid he's going to end up dead. I have a feeling he will prove himself in GKOTM. I think he will be in for the fight of his life against this new Ghidorah, who may be the most powerful Ghidorah yet. Especially if they intend for him to be a villain in GvK.

And the only reason Godzilla won against the MUTOs is when they stopped double teaming against him when Ford blew up the nest.

It should be easy to do a list like this off the top of our head, because it's ultimately a pretty dumb conversation to begin with. Just go off what we see in the films and anything extra that source books can add, sure take it. But it's really not worth wasting time and deducing into the A, B, C and D that you seem to be losing sleep over. I call it like I see it and I see other Godzillas to be far more impressive than the 2014 one.

Surviving a nuclear blast point blank is still an accomplishment not to blink at, for sure. The core of a nuclear explosion can reach temperatures of around 100,000,000 degrees Celsius; the temperature of the Sun's core.

And Showa Godzilla only got the upper hand once they stopped double teaming as well; as Titano was hit with the soundwave cannon and his mind control disfigured.

I think what really need to do if we truly want to deduce which Godzilla is stronger over the other is consider a number of variables instead of "well this one could do this and this" or "this one survived this".

I think it would be more accurate if we could somehow deduce A) The power of their special abilities (Atomic breath, pulse, etc.) B) Physical strength and agility C. Durability D. Stamina E. How tough their opponent was and how the battle played out. For instance, defeating Heisei Rodan is a little less impressive than defeating Showa Rodan. That kind of thing.

Cause I mean, there's questionable stuff all across the board. For instance, does one consider the red spiral ray a trait the 90's Godzilla owns or not (since it technically was given to him; it wasn't an initial trait)? Does a Godzilla getting tossed around and knocked down show signs of a weak Godzilla or a tough opponent?

See it's questions like this that keep me up at night XD
I kinda feel like it's easy to do a list like this off the top of the hea

Kaiser GhidorahGodzilla ForumMonster-verse after Godzilla vs. Kong

I am really hoping that after Godzilla vs Kong that the Monsterverse expands, bringing in classic enemies like Gigan and Mechagodzilla, while also bringing in original monsters, and maybe we can get another Destroy All Monsters/Final Wars kind of deal in the end. I also reeeeeeeeeally hope that they don't kill Ghidorah off in King of the Monsters, and end up being sort of the reoccurring antagonist of the franchise, like how he was in Showa. Can't wait to see Godzilla show Kong who's King in 2020, and am excited to see what lies beyond!

I think surviving a black hole is a little more unconventional than a nuclear bomb. In any case I think the GxM Godzilla's greatest "feat" (I can't begin to explain how much I despise that word with all my heart, soul and mind) is his impressive aerial leap onto Megaguirus.

And with by the same logic you use, the Showa Godzilla may as well be one of the stronger ones since he took on Titanosaurus and MechaGodzilla, an arguably more deadly combo (alien technology anyone?) and still came out on top. Being double teamed is nothing new to Godzilla, but it doesn't exactly equate power within context or comparison of others.

I'm not necessarily saying G'14 is weak, all Godzillas have proven they're tough, but I'm absolutely unimpressed with his abilities in comparison to other incarnations--By far.

Reply
NateZilla10000Godzilla ForumNot available

But if surviving doesn't add up to great power, then how does Godzilla from GvM rank up there? His greatest feats were surviving a black hole (falling into the surviving category) and roasting Megaguirus and her swarm, and yet he's a top tier?

Like I said, the only time G2014 physically showed damage was when he was getting double teamed by the MUTOs. Other than that, he was on top of every damage-dealing encounter he was in in 2014. The first fight with the Hokmuto he walks out unscathed, the bridge scene he walks out unscathed, the second fight with Hokmuto he walks out unscathed, and in the opening fight with Femuto, Femuto can't even get a hit in; she's too busy getting grappled and tossed around by Godzilla. Only when he's double teamed does he actually start to face trouble in the movie. Then immediately when they stop double teaming him, he outright kills them with a single tailswipe and an atomic breath down the throat.

I'm not saying G2014's the most powerful out there (Final Wars is more powerful, Burning G is obviously more powerful, etc.) but I really don't see how he could be so low down the pole when we have other incarnations that hardly hold their own in a 1 on 1 fight, let alone be double teamed by organisms that evolved specifically to kill them.

Reply
G. H. (Gman)Godzilla ForumNot available

I'd still rank Godzilla '14 pretty low on the totem pole, especially compared to some of the later Godzillas from Toho. Sure he's a survivor, but surviving doesn't really add up to great power.

And he did not fight the MUTOs for three days straight with no rest. He fought one for one night and two for another. He casually swam the rest of the time which should be no issue for a creature who has been swimming underwater for much of the previous 60 years.

Number1GodzillaFan,

"I rank him weakest until I see what he does in KOTM."

I honestly do not see how LegendaryGoji is any weaker than ShodaiGoji or the Showa Godzilla, in general.

NateZilla10000Godzilla ForumNot available

I'm honestly surprised how much people don't consider G2014 powerful XD

He took a nuke to the face for crying out loud and walked away fine. And, being from before the Permian era, he survived both the Permian extinction (an event that eliminated 90% of all life on Earth) as well as the KT Event (the extinction that wiped out all life bigger than about 55 pounds). Then he faced off against MUTOs, a species that literally evolved to be a parasite to his own species, for 3 days straight with no rest in between. Furthermore, even though he obviously didn't like getting hit with missiles via the military in the one scene, he certainly took absolutely no damage from them; not a scratch on his body from that encounter at the bridge. The only time he actually bled was again when he faced the animals that evolved to be a parasite to his species alone.

I don't really see how that all calls for a weaker Godzilla incarnation label. Seems pretty mid-tier at the very least.
