@Im Durp your name suits you well. I'm guessing you're young and don't get out much or don't know people outside of your parents, but I assure you in my travels I have heard those things. In many Facebook comments and forum posts a lot of older people in particular cite KKvG as a film they have seen as a kind it made a lot of money. LOL

Not to go against anything anyone here has said but, "When I was pursuing who I thought should win between Kong and Godzilla, it was natural and fitting for the film to end in a draw." -Tomoyuki Tanaka. This was translated from the "Toho special effects resource book".

I agree with Durp. It defeats the purpose of the "vs" title of having them team up, but it's not like we haven't seen monster team ups in the past either. Assuming the general audience take, the typical non-Godzilla fan will see the title "Godzilla vs Kong" and instantly think oh, a fight between the biggest Kaiju icons of pop culture. That is the main reason why people will pay money to see the 2 duke it out. All in all, only time will tell what will happen.

I still don't want to see them team up. I saw that just a year ago with BvS and it sucked. But we'll see what happens 2020. Best of luck to ya

But a team up isn't different it just got used in the last VS movie that was made. As for it being a tie or not, have you watched any vs movies ever? They're always ambiguous with the winner, even the original KKvsG is to some degree. You can have them not team up and still not have one die. As for the general audience I've never seen any general audience see a vs movie and overwhelmingly say hope they just team up. They didn't say it for Frankenstein meets the wolfman, the original KKvsG, Freddy vs Jason, or either of the AVP movies, and all of those movies did fine profit wise, they never teamed up and people came to an agreement with how they were dealt with.

And I can assure you the general audience even if they know about it probably have not seen the original KKvsG movie. This is a very niche fanbase, and that movie came out long enough ago that the target audience for moviegoers are most certainly not the ones that watched that movie, or likely saw it at any point.

@gman thanks for clearing up that G vs KG scene, I must have not paid enough attention when I watched it. Still, it was pretty savage of Godzilla to do that.

@number1Godzillafan, General audiences next to Godzilla vs Megalon all know about King Kong vs Godzilla. Those are the top 2 movies baby boomers know of and when G'14 came out a lot of them were saying "I'd like to see Godzilla and Kong fight again."

I'm telling you here and now it is going to happen. There is a big point in them teaming up and that is they, Legendary, do not want to piss people off. I doubt Toho will have Godzilla be the loser and I doubt Universal will want to see Kong lose. Toho is VERY stingy (as you know) with what entities outside of themselves do with Godzilla so trust me he isn't going to lose on an American screen. There are subtle hints that a team up will happen. Producer Alex Garcia said in an interview while promoting K:SI that quote: "They will clash and who knows where they go from there." Also, in the beginning Gunpei (east) and Marlow (west) try to kill one another but then Kong shows up and they eventually become very close. Bro, here is one major reason why: The GA. They are the ones bringing in the dough. Legendary and these companies don't give a flying f@%k about what the fans want outside of Godzilla looking like Godzilla want. Look at transformers. There is a long video of Thomas Tull talking about concept testing Godzilla vs Kong and they loved it, if they didn't it would not be in development even though us G fans would love to see another it doesn't matter what we think/want. I will end with this, I am all about expanding the brand, i'm about progression and constantly changing; I hate living in the past and I hate doing things that are well enough by themselves over again. A team up is something different and that's why I want to see it.

TrapZillaGodzilla ForumMonster-verse after Godzilla vs. Kong

@morgoth9899, we may have seen Godzilla and Kong fight in '62, but the general audiences likely don't even know that movie exist. They do know that Batman vs Superman exists, and that they teamed up to fight a monster stronger than them. It would seem pretty unoriginal to use that storyline. I'd rather see a storyline from 1962 that hasn't been used in forever rather than something everyone saw only one year ago. But to each their own.

Save the team up for the sequel to GvK when the Xilliens bring in MechaG and King Ghidorah to destroy the world. Then they can become allies for the entire movie and we can all live happily ever after

But the dynamic still sits. You title a movie X VS Y people want them to fight it out. They want to see the winner, you don't do that then completely cop out and pull out a 3rd party that can fight both. If you do you don't call the movie "vs" you call it something else.

There's no point to them teaming up, especially if this is the finale of the monsterverse, you put the two biggest names up and watch them go at it, it's literally worked for almost every other vs movie up till this point and apparently works since they keep making more.

Just because BvS messed it up doesn't mean that GvK will. That Martha thing was just super cringe. I think they both will be confronted by a threat that one on one will kill them and then they realize that they have the best chance of survival if the join forces. I really wish people would stop using the BvS comparison, they are two ENTIRELY different things; one movie features humans, the other giant monsters.

Reply

I really really really hope they don't team up, of all the vs movies in history the only one the 2 combatants teamed up in is BVS. That's the vs movie we want to emulate and take from?

Reply
morgoth9899Godzilla ForumMonster-verse after Godzilla vs. Kong

They are going to beat the living crap out of each other then team up, and to be honest I hope they do. You can call me fanboy trash, an idiot, a gimmick lover, whatever, but we have seen them fight one on one before. I want something new and different. This got solidified in my head even more so while watching the Kong Skull Island commentary with Jordan Vogt-Roberts. He was constantly making references to the fact that he wanted something different than dinosaurs and he wanted the mother longlegs to be different by not shooting a web but by having those sticky tendrils. I wholeheartedly agree with this. We have seen that movie before. I also don't want G2 to be just another GTTHM, again, we have seen that movie before and it is awesome. We don't need another one. Don't get me wrong; I want to see them brawl and I mean full bore, but I would love to see the most iconic kaiju in history team up and beat a bigger threat, maybe the Siberian monster if it is in fact a monster.

One of my very first memories of my life is literally Godzilla. my older brother must of put on a channel featuring a classic Godzilla movie. I was hypnotized, giant monsters destroying whole cities, fire literally coming out of there mouth, aliens and flying saucers? What's not to like for a 2 year old little boy? ever since then my brother and father and I rented every Godzilla or giant monster movie the local Blockbuster or video rental shop had. every Christmas I would wake up and open presents and I would just be so happy to find a new Godzilla vhs in my stocking or a new monster toy. im 30 now and every November I dedicate an entire month to watching Godzilla and other Toho movies. Now I have a 2 year old daughter named Ripley who can share in the same passion as I did with my brother and father. waking up early on a Saturday morning or staying up late we can enjoy a good old Godzilla movie together until the day I die.

I agree, I think there will be 2 generations of mothra's fighting in this one. A popular formula in a lot of Godzilla films as well in Rebirth of Mothra. this could be an interesting way of showing an adult Mothra in another film with different colors or patterns. It would be cool to see Kind Ghidorah just tear the adult Mothra apart. Giving the larva a good reason to team up with Godzilla and Rodan to combat Ghidorah. But all in all I love that they did not shy away from her original design. I think they got a lot of crap about the Godzilla they designed for 2014 that they thought changing any other monster would distract fans from the story of the film.

Meltdown Godzilla(Heisei 1995) can possibly blow up an entire planet! That's pretty powerful. However he would be destroyed before the planet is. But if we are considering "Zilla" as a Godzilla in this topic, then he is by far the weakest. Cant even take on some missiles? what a pathetic excuse for a monster that is called Godzilla. its like we made a superman movie but superman cant take a bullet, not very super right? The people involved either didn't have enough respect for the character they were trying to portray or they had a huge hard-on for American artillery and thought, there is no way any giant monster can take the good old U.S. of A. artillery to the chest and live. Im glad Zilla was knocked out in Final Wars. It is the biggest middle finger Toho could give to our movie studios over here.

@Number1GodzillaFan,

That honestly boils down to how successful 2019 is and if Toho is comfortable with Legendary moving on after 2020.

@riggzamortis86,

I don't think this is a place to bring up our political views. I don't know what/why people hate Donald Trump but, that can easily offend people that actually voted him in that are members here on this website. Especially saying "I'd pay big money to see Trump take on Godzilla and lose horribly in a movie plot."

 let's not forget, when Godzilla arrives to take on the MUTO's he causes great damage and deaths to the people around them. even if its not intentional. I can see a wave of "anti-muto" organizations formed to stop and kill MUTO's like Godzilla by the 4th film. kind of how the world of X-men exists. there are people within the government that see this as an agenda to start a new campaign for a president to put together a task force (a G-force or something like that nature) and that can start a new era in the monster-verse. introducing a mecha-unit like Mecha Godzilla(they do have that Godzilla skeleton from which the first MUTO's came from, they can make a Kiryu model from that) or if King Ghidorah dies in King Of the Monsters they have that to go off of. I would love to see a "Trumpian" character become president and try to play off the fears of the citizens to rise to fight Godzilla and the rest of the monsters. I think it would be interesting to see that, making the movie relevant to what is going on now in the White House. (I would love to see trump take on Godzilla and lose horribly in a movie plot). I would pay a lot of money to see that. anyway this is what I would like to see the Monster-verse go after KKvG in 2020. I think it would be fresh and interesting to see a political aspect thrown into the mix.

@TKOM,

The films may potray them in a positive light for the audience to cheer for each of them, but people cheered for either Godzilla or Kong in 1962 even when Godzilla was the antagonist. I'm more than sure that eventually either Godzilla or Kong will be the antagonist come 2020. It would make sense to have one of them be the antagonist because it is a versus film, in which I sincerely hope they don't make it a BVS type film.

Even then, Godzilla did kill those comrades you speak of in 1943. Even a few deaths in 2014, although accidentally if that would be the correct term to use, because he was only interested in fighting the mutos. He may have accidentally crushed the ship in 1943, but he purposely evaded the other ships traveling to Hawaii in 2014. It doesn't make sense if he destroys one ship then avoid others for no reason. The ships were tagging along with him in 2014 and even then he ignored them.

Number1GodzillaFan,

Yes, but even in the scene in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Shindo wasn't exactly innocent. The man had turned his back on his own nation's anti-nuclear arms policy and built a submarine with nuclear weapons. Additionally he had abandoned Godzilla whom he considered his hero.

The idea about that scene wasn't that Godzilla was evil, it was that both Shindo and Godzilla had become monsters in their own sense. Shindo knew Godzilla was going to kill him. That's why he was there. He wanted to die. Godzilla was merely carrying out both his will and some sort of narrative justice. It's not remotely as simple as one being good or evil. In a sense neither Shindo or Godzilla were evil, just tragic.

Ultimately, the Heisei Godzilla was never "evil" but often the antagonist or an anti-hero. There are plenty of situations in the Heisei series where Godzilla's victory was narratively preferred.

@The King Of The Monsters, I actually said I'd like to see Godzilla fight another monster. It would also make sense if hummanity pissed him off bad enough. I have a feeling he will be the bad guy in GvK as well. I am just tired of all of these superhero movies trying to tie too many characters together(mainly Marvel, don't care for D.C. much)

@gman    I don't even get excited anymore when they bring another movie out. It's always the same old thing, building for the next Avengers movie.

  I don't know if y'all have seen the second Avengers, but it was not even close to the 1st one,IMO. Hell, I'd rather watch the first 3 Ironmans than A2. I'm hoping the 3rd will be the best though. I also doubt Rodan and Mothra need anymore character development since they are giant monsters, though Legendary could make some money since people will know them. Godzilla needs a stand alone film, if anyone does, after only being shown for 10 freaking minutes in 2014.

      I'd much rather have a Logan/GvsDestroyah type film to end the series after the big shabang goes down rather than just keep throwing random monsters in the mix for the next royal Rumble. I know they can market the shit out of them cause they have big names, but that's not what I want to see. I want to see good quality filmmaking, without the intentions of simply using these monsters for money(dc,marvel) I want to see them try and make the best possible movie they can, resulting in a better product overall. Even if that means killing Rodan/Mothra/Kong/whoever

@Huge Ben, Godzilla vs Kong will make so much money Toho will probably want them to make 10 more Godzilla movies lol

The King of the MonstersGodzilla ForumMonster-verse after Godzilla vs. Kong

There's a difference between Godzilla being a threat and becoming the primary antagonist of a film. I'm sure upcoming films will address the threat he poses to humanity and introduce some characters who want to kill him, but the films go out of their way to portray him and Kong in a positive light and make the audience root for them. Godzilla isn't intentionally helping humanity, but neither is he intentionally attacking them. Randa's line about the creature having no conscience is understandable from someone who watched his comrades being killed by a giant monster. He had no reason to see anything beyond a destructive wild animal, while characters like Serizawa who are actually familiar with Godzilla view him with respect and admiration. Godzilla could have destroyed that ship completely by accident for all we know, simply swimming into it and destroying it with his mass. It's still a big jump to take an anti-hero Godzilla who is presented as a protagonistic monster into an all-out villain who must be destroyed. I could certainly see some scenes where Godzilla battles the military in upcoming films, or even see him presented as the greater of two evils in his battle with Kong, but not him becoming the villain of a solo film in the MonsterVerse.
