I agree with G.H.Gman,

Toho did a fantastic job with Shin Gojira, honestly I think its the best installment since The Return Of Godzilla(1984). I hope there is as much Monsterverse as possible but I think it'll be a longer wait to see more Toho kaiju movies featuring Godzilla. Toho always does it better.

with all these "new" MUTO's and back stories, I hope they don't give all this time to the new human characters. There is a whole new cast with there stories. I hope the Legendary learned their lesson last time and focus on what is selling tickets. K:SI did a fantastic job with both the monster fights and main character drama. I hope this will be the new trend.

riggzamortis86Godzilla ForumWhat I noticed when I looked closely at Rodan's cave painting.

I think that would really give Rodan an advantage over his oppenents. He can fly and have some kind of offensive attack while in flight. we already have mothra that can also fly but at least can have this supposed "toxic" attack. Rodan should have something neat as well.

in Godzilla vs Mech-Godzilla 2(1993) we barely see Fire Rodan do any damage with its fire beam against any foe. When it used it on Mecha-G2 it didn't even make MG2 flinch! it was the first time we see Rodan in this new form with a new ability and it doesn't even matter much. so I hope if he can fire some kind beam or fire, it should look like it hurts when getting hit by Rodans breath.

Both Godzilla and Skull Island kept it at a pretty tight 2 hours.  Godzilla: King of the Monsters will likely follow suit. The amount/length of filming is not indicative of a movie's run time, merely a result of scheduling for actors/locations and/or complex shots.

I'm pretty sure that's a crack in the cave wall, not a breath weapon.

I've seen Kong: Skull Island three times and never noticed that. Great observation.

Oh man, you know what'd be a crazy idea?

If this painting is the result of ancient humans having actually killed off Rodan's mate, and thus angered him enough for him to directly attack them!

Then, he awakens in the present day, finds these disgusting things are EVERYWHERE, and starts causing a ruckus that brings out Mothra and/or Godzilla, who promptly try to get him to cut out that crap.

I have a feeling that GKOTM is going to be 3 hour long film, I honestly wouldn't mind it tho.

KingKaijuGhidorahGodzilla ForumWhat would Ghidorah look like?

I think that the Ghidorah would look a bit GMK Ghidorah. Remember when Gman123 said that Ghidorah looks hunched over? The GMK Ghidorah is hunched over too. Also, Legendary's Ghidorah was found in ice, like the GMK Ghidorah. And, a couple of you suggested that this Ghidorah might have an Asian Dragon head. The GMK Ghidorah has that. The plot of Godzilla 2 says that the monsters were "mere myths", and in GMK, King Ghidorah was sort of a myth, being a guardian monster and all.

It began filming June 19th, so it's about a month and a half the way in to it. Rumor has it they will not switch to the Chinese location until around October. They're currently still in Atlanta. So they likely won't finish principle photography until later this year. This does not include reshoots.

"I feel like, after a while, "oh they are a big prehistoric monster that has awoken" would get pretty boring."

Which is exactly what happened in the 1950s.

I may get flack for this, but the more I think about it, the more I feel like the MonsterVerse won't age well. Godzilla '14 is a fairly indifferent movie three years later and already the charm of Skull Island is starting to wear off on me.

If Godzilla vs. Kong ends up being the final film, that would be fine since Toho has proven they can be innovative with the series when the right talent is put behind the camera. It's not that I'm not excited about the upcoming MonsterVerse slate--No doubt the movies will be enjoyable at minimum. But recently I've been more interested in what Toho will offer post-Legendary.

As someone who served in the U.S. Navy during the Cold War and the son of a soldier who fought in the Pacific War, I can tell you that the people most desirous of war are those who have never seen it. The sailors who man the Navy's fleet ballistic missile submarines feel that a successful deterrent patrol is one from which they return with all of their missiles. The 41 For Freedom were the 41 Polaris/Poseidon nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines commissioned between 1960-67. None of them ever fired a missile in anger. As a result, we're here, safe and sound, talking about giant monsters. The motto of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) was "Peace is Our Profession."

G.H. (Gman):

I clicked on the link in your article about Shin Godzilla's themes and re-read your excellent article about the comparison between it and Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack in terms of their themes, especially regarding Japanese nationalism. So, because of you, I'm going to have to watch GMK again this weekend.

These are great times.

And, only 600 days until Godzilla:King of the Monsters.

Shin Godzilla is easily within my top three Godzilla films. During the film's production my hope was that we would be given a film with a dynamic story and riveting narrative. I also wanted to see a film that had a contemporary look and feel, a semi-documentary atmosphere, as if we were looking at a series of events just as they were unfolding. I wasn't that familiar with the work of Hideaki Anno, so I really didn't now what to expect, which turned out to be a good thing. Along with all of this, I wanted a film that was evocative of the 1954 original masterpiece in terms of atmosphere, story, visuals and meaning. When the designs started to be leaked, especially the 'teaser' poster in December 2014, I began to feel that we were on the cusp of something remarkable, a unique experience in the Series. When the first trailer was released on April 2016, a sense of relief came over me. Prior to this, there had been rumors and reports about the state of production, including major changes with regard to techniques used. That beautiful trailer was a joy to behold. I saw in it the potential for a serious, landmark film that would reach and resonate with non-fans well beyond the 'niche' of kaiju eiga and other tokasatsu films. In these forums I expressed a hope that the narrative of Shin Godzilla would be as compelling and important as the special and visual effects. The second trailer, released around July 19th, unfolding against the stirring themes of Shiro Sagisu, strengthened my hope for that great, truly great film Godzilla, a film that would be memorable and beautiful.

Shin Godzilla has fulfilled all of my hopes; it's everything I have wanted to see and, just as importantly, experience in a Godzilla film. I have found in Team Yaguchi a group of characters that not only hold my attention, but earn my respect and admiration. Hideaki Anno, through the use of those almost jarring close ups, transports you from being an observer to being an actual participant in the meetings that punctuate the film's urgent narrative. It is this involvement that in many ways sets Shin Godzilla apart from many other films in the Series. It is not only meaningful, but it involves you and makes you part of its journey. I found myself unable to stop thinking about it and wanting to see it during that amazing theatrical run.

Shin Godzilla is a great, seminal film that is contemporary and topical, while being traditional and carrier of homages at the same time.

TheGMan123Godzilla ForumMonster-verse after Godzilla vs. Kong

For the post-GvK MonsterVerse, if it will continue afterwards, we have to factor in the possibility that, when the rights to Godzilla lapse back to Toho afterwards, Toho may not be privy to continuing to allow loaning Godzilla, as well as other classics.

In this particular scenario, we have to work off of Kong and the MonsterVerse's original elements. Perhaps take the Phase 2 approach of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by way of introducing ancillary elements to known story backgrounds to monsters already introduced, as well as experimentation with less surefire properties. For example, perhaps taking a more concrete dive into the mysticism of Mothra by taking MONARCH to more esoteric locales that make them question reality as it is in a fantasy adventure flick.

However, now we must consider the possibility that Godzilla and potentially other classic Toho daikaiju will continue to be a strong presence in the MonsterVerse post-GvK. In this case, the same general principles as I've highlighted before remain intact, but now you have the esoteric cast of classic monsters necessary to add some extra star-power. For example, change that MONARCH fantasy adventure idea to involve Godzilla having to contend with increasingly esoteric abilities that go beyond brute force after his encounter with Mothra.

These are just my own personal thoughts, and are most definitely subject to change as the MonsterVerse continues to develop.

A mechagodzilla could be totally realistic in this universe just make up some bs about how his stature is more structurally sound for a larger scale weapon basically meaning we had to copy his look to get something that big with that many weapons to fight him.

If we can have monsters living below us and buy that I'll buy aliens and mechs anyday.

Wait aren't all animals evolved? The one thing of many things I hated about Shin Godzilla was it can evolve like a damn virus. Evolution doesn't work that way, Hideki Anno! Shin Godzilla was less of a Godzilla more like Neon Genesis Evangelion Angel and the ending was very reminiscent to this with Shin Godzilla about to start Third Impact!

Also, I hated how they couldn't even bother to hire a Japanese American to play as a Japanese American!

Also, I hate that they still make America the enemy even though we are allies. Well, frienemies.

I originally was hoping for realism and stuff but I thought it over and I have changed my opinion. Now, I would actually like to see the concept of aliens get introduced, because it would allow for a lot more introduction of monsters and movie plots. I feel like, after a while, "oh they are a big prehistoric monster that has awoken" would get pretty boring. I would welcome the introduction of aliens because I feel like it would make it more interesting.

Happy one year anniversary to my 2nd favorite Godzilla film and what I consider the best Godzilla film since the 1954 original.

I'm glad Toho took risks and got such incredible talent involved with the making of this film. While the film does drag a bit in the latter half of the film, it's easy to get caught up in the action altogether when watching this film. Like GMK, it addresses for Japan to become a stronger nation like what Gman pointed out in his article a few months ago.

There were so many references to the 54 original film While also providing some 84 in the mix. I love this film. Sure, people are going to say GINO 2.0, but they're misguided. Hell, the 54 original press material and Shin have a lot more in common than what meets the eye. They're both animals that either already evolved, or was able to evolve.

Even if this is a stand alone film, I am so happy they made it, and that I was able to watch it in theaters for the limited run here in the states. I can only hope that Toho eventually makes more live action films in the near future. I'm going to give the anime Godzilla a chance, but, I sincerely hope that Toho goes back to tokusatsu as it is their tradition and their art form. While I do like the CGI in Shin Godzilla, I would have loved to have seen it in practical effects, although the CGI was rough in a lot of parts earlier on in the film, it got better as the film progressed and the CGI was convincing at some points where you would think it was a animatronic puppet.

Exactly. Honestly I use to think the purple atomic breath was an odd design choice, but I got use to it real quick.

I like how the atomic breath started out as mist and slowly compressed into a fine beam. It's like the orange atomic breath from Godzilla 2000 like Gman said. Toho decided to go a different route to be original. Speaking of which I just got the email saying my copy has shipped.

I've always giggled at the complaints over the beams from his spines. Because Godzilla's never gone nuts with lasers and lights exploding from his body before....

Like you said The Legend of Brian, adding to preexisting attributes.

I had a blast with Shin Godzilla, I saw it twice when it got the limited release here in the US. It's definitely a different take on The King of the Monsters. Some people will say that it's Godzilla 1998 all over again, but in my opinion where Godzilla 1998 took away classic attributes of Godzilla, Shin added onto preexisting attributes, like the back and tail lasers. For some this was too much and it stopped being classic Godzilla. It's a fair argument, I just happen not to agree. Like in the movie, Godzilla as a franchise must evolve to survive, and hell why not go crazy with lasers?

Aliens is right up there with the Hollow Earth theory that's been introduced anyway, so they might as well at this point. It wouldn't be that much of a stretch if done in the same way they've portrayed the Hollow Earth explanation.

riggzamortis86Godzilla ForumWill Godzilla vs Kong have a 3rd Monster (and another question)?

maybe after GKOFM is done the entire world is sick of monsters and Godzilla destroying their cities and killing many people in the process they want a counter MUTO agency. That agency develops a new gigantic mecha-unit, but there is complications with the robot, like getting permission from the president to get it deployed. so the agency hatches a plan to kidnap Kong from skull island(since they know where a MUTO is they want it to destroy a city in order to force a their mecha-unit to deploy), then Godzilla shows up. Kong fights him. then they meet the 3rd monster. the mecha unit.(since Godzilla and kong had robotic versions of themselves in the past this would be a fun way of both of them having a common enemy). they team up!
