well kind of hard to determine kaiju growth periods, but I would imagine that he would at least be hundreds if not thousands of years old. Since the monsterverse suggested there was once a thriving population of Godzillas point in time and it is suggested that his kind ruled during the Permian...possibly the late Permian or even the early Triassic which was 251 million years ago.

G. H. (Gman) Thanks for the reminder. I watched Mecha 2 and need to see Space to complete the Heisei series. Mecha 2 was pretty good. Even though watching out of sequence, I feel no different about Destroyah even if I watched in sequence- just my 2 cents.

I threw 1998 in last night since my other half wanted to see it. It seems evident it was getting in on Jurassic Park from that era. It was not a bad movie by itself but maybe was not a very good Godzilla movie. To its credit, it was nice to see a faster, more agile and calculating creature. It was an ok popcorn flick.

And now Happy 52 to Masanobu's brother, Masahiro Takashima. After his role in Gunhed he went on to follow in his brother's and father's footsteps. He played Kasuma Aoki in Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla II and then played his brother's role, Sho Kuroki, in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. He's a year and two days older than his brother, Masanobu.

Both are the sons of Tadao Takashima who starred in both King Kong vs. Godzilla and Son of Godzilla. The whole family:

dk,
As The King of the monsters explained and as I told you in the other thread where you asked what order you should watch them in, GMK is an anthology movie part of an anthology series. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah is part of a more strict continuity fans call the Heisei series. It has no connection with GMK whatsoever. You've also seen the movie that takes place directly after Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah already--Godzilla vs. Mothra.

The only two movies in the Millennium series that connect are Godzilla against MechaGodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo SOS. Those two movies have nothing to do/are not in the same continuity with the 1993 Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla II. MechaGodzilla II takes place immediately after Godzilla vs. Mothra. Please refer back to this in terms of order and continuity:

Seeking advice from the forum

On another subject, I'm glad you enjoyed GMK. It's usually considered one of the best in the series and is one of my top favorites.

Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (most people just call it GMK) isn't connected to Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, it's a reboot to the series envisioned as a direct sequel to the original film. The version of King Ghidorah in that film was an ancient guardian monster, while the King Ghidorah from Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah is a mutated creature created by terrorists from the future.

The King of the MonstersGodzilla ForumBeing lazy- Godzilla gender: Female?

Like has already been mentioned, Godzilla has always been portrayed as a male, evidenced by his official title, King of the Monsters. His sons, Minilla and Godzilla Junior, are both adopted. They were younger members of his species that Godzilla adopted and raised in order to preserve his kind. It's never clear in Son of Godzilla itself that Godzilla just adopted Minilla, but supplementary materials and Toho's own website confirm that Minilla was simply adopted. Godzilla Junior, Godzilla's son from the Heisei series, is explicitly stated to be adopted and have no blood relation to Godzilla in the film and in informational books. Junior was an unmutated Godzillasaurus that Godzilla raised, with his radiation gradually transforming Junior into another Godzilla like himself.

Even the 1998 American Godzilla, which most fans are hesitant to even consider to be Godzilla, is explicitly said to be a male creature in the film. After analyzing the creature, the protagonist discovers that the creature is "a very unusual he" with the ability to lay fertilized eggs. People often say Godzilla 1998 has to be female because it supposedly reproduces through the process of parthenogenesis, something only female reptiles are capable of, but this isn't the case. The 1998 film doesn't follow actual science very closely at all, and the process of parthenogenesis as it occurs in reptiles wasn't well understood at the time the film was made and is never mentioned in the film. Godzilla 1998 is a male organism that due to its mutated genes possesses the ability to reproduce asexually through its own bizarre process. In Godzilla: The Series, the sequel to the 1998 film, Godzilla's sole surviving offspring is identified as a male and even mates with a female giant komodo dragon and acts as a surrogate father to her offspring. It also lacks its parent's reproductive ability. When its parent is resurrected in the show as a cyborg, the characters explicitly say that it is the other Godzilla's "daddy," rather than its mother.

There are never any female members of Godzilla's kind seen in the films, but non-film media have featured them. Examples are Bijira and Majira, Godzilla's girlfriend and mother, respectively, from the Game Boy Godzilla game, and Gojirin from the Get Going! Godzilland OVAs.

^I have a fan-fiction idea where Godzilla Junior, now King of the Monsters after his father melted down, adopts Twin Godzillas; one male called Godzilla III, and one female who I still haven't figured out a name for. I also have a head-canon that Mothra Leo, the only known Male Mothra (from the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy) is Godzilla's illegitimate son. Some of Godzilla's scale were still on Mothra when she laid the egg and they got mixed in. It would explain why Leo was so powerful and had all those lasers.

Anyways, Godzilla is definitely male. There is no question. Otherwise, he can't be called the King of the Monsters.

TheGMan123Godzilla ForumBeing lazy- Godzilla gender: Female?

Nope. Godzilla is referred to as a male in BOTH instances.

The former is even called out for being a REALLY REALLY WEIRD male, but a biological male, nonetheless.

The latter, Godzilla is referred to as a he by EVERYONE, even psychics, as is Godzilla Junior. It's unknown if Junior is Godzilla's true son, or if he merely adopted him, but it's a father-son relationship regardless.

The only instance of a female Godzilla member that I'm aware of is in my own fan-fiction writing where I gave Godzilla a daughter instead of the sons he usually has.

To all- thanks for the input and discussion- I like to have fun and we all like different things for different reasons. For instance, it was stated a certain movie was the worst- I need to check it out since I might like it.

G. H. (Gman) is correct that I am all over the map in viewing the movies. It is strange though. I watched All Out Attack and then Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah next- Ghidorah began exactly how Attack ended- same type of ship in the ocean viewing remnants of the final battle from Attack. But Attack came later- weird.

Yeah, I dig Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah well enough, the time travel stuff is just as messy as the screenwriting gets in the series. But there's plenty of things that work in spite of it.

Seems like you're all over the map in terms of which ones you're watching. I'd certainly take a break after binging that many too.

G. H. (Gman) I do nit pick but only because I like it. Indeed, I am becoming familiar with some things like music and actors.

That said, I saw  Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah and can understand why you recommended as a first or early watch. Although I usually think the time travel thing to explain a story is weak, it worked really well and I thought it was a very strong movie and also an origins film of sorts. It was also nice to see Godzilla be the undisputed winner and survive at the end.

Tokyo S.O.S was really good too- I just wish G could be King of the Monsters and kick everyone's ass quite honestly. He is almost like Rocky- Get up Rock! Get up!

I have noticed the music recurring in different ways so I will just go with it.

Watching 2000 right now and am on the fence- possibly Zillaed out in the last 48 hrs lol!

dk,
The two females characters in Destoroyah you mention were Miki Seagusa and Meru Ozawa. Miki is a reoccurring character in the Heisei series--You actually saw her in Godzilla vs. Mothra. She has psychic abilities that allow her to sense Godzilla's presence. Meru is an original character to the film and came from a psychic institute in the US. That's why they're talking about their "powers". That being said, the actress that plays Meru actually played one of the Cosmos in Godzilla vs. Mothra '92.

Shame you didn't enjoy Ifukube's score as it's one of the better parts of the movie. The piece at the end of Giant Monsters All-Out Attack is stock music from the same composer who also scored the original 1954 film and is Godzilla's main theme for the overall series. (He also scored Godzilla vs. Mothra and was nominated for a Japanese Academy Award for it. Some of the same themes are used that you hear in Destoroyah.)

Do check out these when you have the time. Although I agree Destoroyah isn't as great as a lot of people seem to make it out, it may clarify some things a bit:

Small update. Making my way down the list. Just saw Destroyah (1995) and All out Attack.

Destroyah was not very good imo. Good thing I am temered with MST3K films. Some observations:

o A kid mentioned his dad's extensive Godzilla research and the camera panned to a shelf with Godzilla action figures.

o Destroyah had an inner jaw- an obvious nod to the Xenomorph

o musical scores should enhance movies but Destroyah's was bizarre and distracting: weird piano music and strange militaristic music

o I wondered if the two females were supposed to be the Cosmos. They had an abrupt conversations about their powers that came out of nowhere.

o some scenes seemed to be shot from different people who didn't communicate about the flow. The baby Destroyah attacking someone hiding in a car, for example, felt like it belonged in a different movie.

All Out Attack was pretty solid. It was a pretty good mix of everything. The only bad thing was the end credits music- same military music from Destroyah scenes. It sounds like boss battle music to a video game.

Looks like some of the movies may  have been removed but I am going through them. Seems these are newer remakes so far.

riggzamortis86,
It's a very loaded question, and I might break the website if I go into it. One day I'll write my novel about why it's the worst film in the series, but until then it largely comes down to an attitude of 'more is better' on the surface (even if none of it works--even on an entertainment level), the most wasted potential/resources of the entire series and insulting the audience/fans with an attempt to legitimize its existence via issue that doesn't exist. Apart from some nice photography in the first act, the movie is nails on a chalkboard from beginning to end.

To dk, just go in with an open mind and formulate your own opinions regarding these movies. Make no apologies for what you like, or don't like. I could debate anyone here until I'm blue in the face regarding certain Godzilla movies, Star Trek, James Bond, superhero movies, you name it. It's not going to change my mind or theirs. No one's opinion is any more valid than yours. Remember that.

Let dk find the fun in each of them.

What exactly do you find so abysmal about Spacegodzilla movie anyway aside from the obvious, Gman?

I can see some short comings in the film(music is one of them), but I actually like it way more than some other entries. Im just curious what you don't like most about it?

BIG Happy 51 years to Masanobu Takashima who played the memorable and commendable Major Sho Kuroki in Godzilla vs. Biollante. I always enjoyed his standout presence in that film. He successfully carried on his dad's legacy who stared in King Kong vs. Godzilla, Son of Godzilla and Frankenstein Conquers the World.

I wish he had reprised his role as Kuroki in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. I've seen him in other movies as well and he's just stellar.

Yeah, but even on those merits getting through it is a pretty abysmal experience. I don't find anything fun about it and am often bored. It's one of two Godzilla movies I can't make it all the way through in one sitting.

I usually like to say I don't "hate" any Godzilla movie and that I can normally find redeeming qualities in each film that keep them above the water. But SpaceGodzilla is the one that really tests me with the "H" word...

I'm sure I'm really selling dk on sitting through all of them.

I get it. I was a fan of spacegodzilla when I was a kid. But I liked how the movie tied in characters and plot from Godzilla vs Biollante in order to give the movie better continuity. I think Spacegodzilla is a great monster and fun to talk about. The movie growing up... I see its many flaws now, but still enjoy it way more than most other Godzilla movies from the 2000's era.

My advice to watching the movie is "Listen, its a monster movie. Not the Godfather. Go in and have Fun."

For some reason the fan base still highly reveres Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla '93. The movie has aged so poorly that I find it particularly boring to get through. That being said, I can understand why many think it's better than Godzilla vs. Mothra '92.

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla on the other hand...

Reply
riggzamortis86Godzilla ForumHulu Godzilla

I also find Godzilla vs Mothra (1992) a really bad stint in the series. I do enjoy the Heisei series a lot but so hard to get through the film without cringing when the daughter gets involved and just goes from being cute to really annoying. Plus Battra clearly having Rodan's roar really confused me. do they not think fans will remember such an iconic roar from such an iconic monster?

I do enjoy the next two entries after this though. Mechagodzilla and Spacegodzilla are better that Mothra entry. Destroyah is the best! Im glad Hulu got so many movies in time for Halloween and Christmas. Now I can watch these films where ever I go without lugging around the movies themselves.

G. H. (Gman)Godzilla ForumHulu Godzilla

Nice to hear your thoughts, dk. A lot of people consider the '92 Godzilla vs. Mothra one of the weakest entries in the entire series. While I somewhat agree, I'm one of the few that think Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla is worse--Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla is almost universally agreed to be the weakest of the Heisei series though. (For me it's the worst film of the entire series.) So your complaints so far are certainly justified, if not downright spot on. (Especially that Raiders of the Lost Ark comment. The screenwriters and directors of the Heisei series had some weird obsession with badly aping superior Hollywood movies.)

I've not watched Godzilla vs. Mothra in a long time, but I remember the main characters being pretty steadfast about rooting for Mothra--At least Takuya and his family. As for the dialogue, some of that you can definitely chalk up to the dubbing. Maybe I'm misremembering, but I don't recall the "hostile" line in the Japanese version. I'll have to go back and look.

How come you didn't start with Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah? Despite all its logic flaws I usually tend to find that a more enjoyable watch than Mothra, MechaGodzilla and SpaceGodzilla--Maybe Destoroyah too.

Going to be honest, even as a Heisei fan, the next two movies might be a struggle, but don't give up Godzilla vs Destoroyah is worth it.
