November is not a great month for Japanese box office, it's true. But December is usually a great month. It could be considered close enough to make much of its ground there.
I'm don't want to make too many excuses for it either. But I think the fact it had around 290 less theaters than most major releases hurt it the most. I'd be surprised if this hit $5 million.
I think it's also worth noting the month of the release. I'm not sure how box office trends work in Japan, but with Shin Godzilla being released in July and Monster Planet in November, I'm sure that had an effect on ticket sales. I think Toho is expecting to make their money from the Netflix release.
I NEEEEEED IT
I wonder if it’ll come with any accessories
It looks AMAZING!!!
That doesn't mean Mothra wasn't responsible. It could be 2009 larvae's mother. An earlier generation of Mothra possibly.
But if your right, the only other winged MUTO's that we know of that have wings are either Rodan or King Ghidorah. The male muto's don't fit the timeline.
That smog wasn't Mothra. The smog was in 1952 and Mothra was discovered in a cocoon in 2009. It shows that prior to 2009, Mothra was either in a cocoon or in her larval stage.
I feel like if the 70's Godzilla movies were more like Terror Of MG, the 70's entries would have been a little better. Still love the 70's movies but ToMG is the best one of that decade.
This one might be a surprise you all.
I put Terror of Mechagodzilla and Gorgo together. I thought Gorgo and titanosaurus shared similar designs and made a great night.
Seems these big ones have claw sizes that don't correspond to body size like the above picture suggests. Check this short video:
Can't wait to see this! The run time doesn't worry me, but I really hope the human parts don't drag between the action scenes. The Godzilla parts never feel as rewarding to me when they're the only thing I'm waiting for... But they say the action and visuals are good, and in the end, that's the most important to me, so I'm excited!
Not really concerned about duration- it just needs to be good. I will go in with an open mind since I like what this movie could be based on trailers I have seen. Netflix and popcorn ready!
I thought Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla(1974) paired with King Kong Escapes was a fun mecha monster showdown!
it is the only time I will say a Fukada film outclasses a Honda film side by side like this. I can't stand the characters in KKE! I love the mecha king, but it's the only thing I think is great about the movie. Usually I praise Honda's films above all else. But I think King Kong Escapes is Honda's worst film. Anyone else have a different opinion on this?
thank you Gman,
i hope despite the short film it still delivers!
still very excited to see it.
well the one in the middle of the "zombie" on-lookers is the same character from the beginning of the film where that fisherman brought in that tadpole Hedorah to the doctor. If he is a "spirit" did he die from hedorah? it just doesn't make any sense but im very intrigued by the whole scene with them. I want an answer damn-it!
thank you EmptyH for your insight, but im not satisfied with that as an answer. I want to know Banno's reason for their presence in the movie.
It sounds to me like the pacing issue may arise from both its original conceptualization as a series and its purpose to act as the first in a trilogy and set up two subsequent films. Many of the shorter G-films don't have quite as noticeable pacing issues, or at least not the same kind of pacing issues, simply because their story is meant to stand alone and doesn't need to set the stage for what follows quite as much. I imagine the pacing issues with Planet of the Monsters will seem less glaring once chapters 2 and 3 are released. Given the announcement of a trilogy I wasn't really expecting it to function as a completely satisfying standalone experience anyway, so I'm not really troubled by these complaints.
I have to agree with Gman here. While Planet of the Monsters is shorter than the past few Godzilla movies, there are shorter films that use their time better. I think the pacing problem is down to that the trilogy was originally conceived as a series, so I've heard.
riggzamortis86,
Godzilla x MechaGodzilla (2002) was 88 minutes. Godzilla vs. Megalon was 86 minutes. Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla (1974) was 84 minutes. Terror of MechaGodzilla was 83 minutes. Most tend to average at about 90 minutes--Give take a couple of minutes.
While people are complaining about the run time, I think has less to do with the actual length of the film and more to do with the pacing.
uniqueusername,
"What western fans and critics?"
So you completely didn't read the article and the links the quotes were from? Cool. Good observational skills. 11/10.
That's certainly not to say the individuals on the site aren't completely allowed to express their own opinions on a movie. But the reviewers there do tend to be very critical. I've always wondered why that is.
I love Godzilla vs Hedorah. I believe it is in my top 5 of Godzilla films. I have heard a lot of talk about the "zombie" people in that film but never anything definitive. David Kalat refers to them as "rural villagers? spirits of the dead?" in his book A Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series. I could see it being either of those things. The teenagers drove their cards (which adds to the pollution) up to the mountain and then started a fire (which probably doesn't help with the pollution problem) which probably drew the attention of Hedorah and lead to more death. This could be adults, or "spirits", that are trying to see what is going on or just judging the teenagers for bringing more death and destruction to the mountain.
^That'll probably be a while. Besides, Toho Kingdom, as much as I love them, tend to painfully overly critical in their movie reviews. Any site that gives classics like Ishiro Honda's Atragon two stars out of five makes me arch an eyebrow. Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters could be a masterpiece, and Toho Kingdom will probably give it a star and a half.
What western fans and critics? The only one I found said it had quite a bit of problems, such as very shallow characters and a not so good script filled with a lot of random technojargon, but they said it was good overall.
I wonder when Tohokingdom is going to start getting reviews up
89mins? That's the shortest Godzilla movie since All Monsters Attack isn't it? Still I cant wait to see it! It better get to Netflix asap!
So on the topic of Godzilla vs Hedorah I have a question for anyone who wishes to answer!
What is the deal with those old "zombie" people watching the teenagers party at Mount Fuji?
also I think Godzilla vs Hedorah is the strangest Godzilla movie along with Shin Gojira. Those 2 stand out the most out the entire series as the most abstract. Any opinions?
So I matched up Destroy all Monsters with Gamera vs Guiron. Both have female alien protagonists aliens. And both have a large Kaiju cast.
Also All Monsters Attack and Gamera:Super Monster. Even tho All Monsters Attack is a much superior film to the Gamera flash back film. The reason I chose the, together is obvious. Both have children antagonists along with a flashback sequence of earlier monster movies.
Godzilla vs Hedorah with Gamera vs Zigra. Thank you King of the Monsters. Your suggestion really fit the bill!
Godzilla vs Gigan with Gamera vs Viras! Both have aliens trying to take over the earth(again)!
Godzilla vs Megaon with Gamera vs Monster X! This ones a stretch i know but both Jaiga and Megalon are completely different they are both not aliens and both come from strange backgrounds and ancient cities.
All in all, It's getting good reviews. I wasn't expecting a masterpiece. I was hoping for something good. Based on the reviews, it's just that. Can't wait to see it for myself.
From what I'm remembering the juvenile members of the Godzilla species being so high up on the list may be related to a cultural direction in entertainment media in Japan.
Basically, childhood is often used as the backdrop for many pieces of media in the country and revered because adult life in Japan is very soul-crushing and laborious due to the long work hours, strict work environments, and a general oppressive atmosphere that lends itself well to great deals of escapism fiction.
Yes, the most forgetable monsters in the franchise played a huge role in securing the 2014 film's mediocrity. I concur.
However, Mothra kept the franchise alive.
G.H. ^ I agree.
Insects played a huge role.. even the MUTOs from Edwards version.... basically big insects.
It's different. Not crazy about the design... but let's see what it looks like in action.
uniqueusername,
I don't really see the problem. I think it looks enough like Godzilla. The 2014 monster only sorta matches Godzilla's silhouette, but the fandom goes bonkers and accepts that one. The floodgates have opened for experimentation.
Wonder when we'll get a trailer?
What can I say, I'm not a negative nelly! I tend to enjoy the results of this lind of experimentation, and I respect the fact that creative chances are being taken. No need to complain six months before the movie opens.
You could say the very same thing about Shin Godzilla's previous few forms, but it was a unique and interesting idea that played into the direction they took the character.
Mecha-Godzilla has been an alien war machine meant to impersonate Godzilla, a Human countermeasure built using technology from the future, and a Human countermeasure built around the skeleton and DNA-based processing system of the original Godzilla.
This is hardly the most egregious thing to come of the character property, and we've yet to see it in action anyways.
>mechagodzilla
>doesn't look like Godzilla
>somehow very few people have a problem with this
This community continues to intrigue me
@TherizinoRex,
I couldn't agree more! Apparently a mech code named Jaguar J IS a part of this continuity, and is mentioned in the Monster Apocalypse prequel novel. I wonder if he'll pop up in the second and/or third film.
How can I be skeptical if I haven't seen it in action yet? :D I love the experimenting they are doing with the formula in Japan, and a Mechagodzilla with a head that looks like a giant ant (gi-ant?) is definitely an experiment! I'm all for new ideas and designs, so I'm super excited!

How come this thing isn't on the official SH Monsterarts website?
