This one might seem silly and I know I might get some backlash. I put Godzilla vs Biollante with ...... Little Shop Of Horrors(the musical). I know what some of you are going to say. Little Shop Of Horrors isn't a giant monster movie. But the original ending(now on DVD! check it out!) I think has some of the best giant monster effects of that time! I resently just saw the directors cut with the original ending and it was soo fantastic I nearly cried! That film holds some great special FX and the fact that Audrey 2 takes over the world and destroys cities was stellar! I recommend that cut to anyone out there who disagrees with my monster mash up! But for Biollante's and Audrey 2's similar monster attributes is the reason for this double feature!
I think if the Heisei series stuck with the same dark atmosphere that both The Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs Biollante both shared the series would have been at pare with the Showa era. These two films are the best in the Heisei series and I wish the rest of the series followed the trend that was layed out for them.
It seems king of strange to not release a movie they produced in all these theaters they own in the first place. Why wouldn't they just release it everywhere they can? At least the 2 other sequels are still announced. No matter what we are getting 2 more Godzilla movies after wards despite the low numbers.
Just because it did bad with ticket sales doesn't mean the film is bad.
UPDATE (11/28/17):
World of KJ translated the box office report from Kogyotsushin--Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters faced a harsh drop to #5 in its second week, making $425,000 for Saturday and Sunday. Its total is now at $2.5 Million and it's expected to finish below $5 Million. It's admissions are an estimated 137,000 tickets.
Again, it doesn't appear that Toho intended for this to be a major release given its number of theaters. But anything under $10 Million is pretty disappointing and the film will potentially sell the least amount of tickets in the series' history.
I mean, there's still plenty to theorize about I suppose. Or create headcanon.
That would be cool! Well I get that. I just thought my random thought and theory would be a fun topic.
Your right though, thank god(zilla) for source material.
I think, based on traditional storytelling mechanisms, we the audience are to assume these characters' "theories" are fact unless said otherwise on film. If not, it'd be easy to throw Dr. Yamane's theory about Godzilla's origins to the wind and claim he was from outer space. (Which A Space Godzilla nearly did anyway, but thank God for confirmation from source books, I guess.)
Interestingly, the writers for the IDW comic had a brilliant idea about Gigan's origins that included him being the protector of his home planet. After so many cybernetic enhancements from the race that worshiped him (due to constant battle wounds) he went crazy - wild and hungered for power. Eventually he exterminated his home planet.
Unfortunately Toho shot the whole idea down.
ah! I need that book and spend my life translating it. thank you both @Gman and @The King Of The Monsters!
I know that hedorah is hypothesized in the film, but that was the professors opinion of where hedorah came from. I realize im taking a lot of liberties here, but I feel like hedorah could have come from Space Hunter M. Their planet was polluted and uninhabitable thanks to the species that polluted it in the first place.
I thought it would make sense that Gigan would make an excellent hedorah exterminator given his physical abilities to cut through anything.
^ Those actually both come from the same book, Tomoyuki Tanaka's Definitive Godzilla Introduction. MyKaiju.com uploaded a translation of a large part of the book.
Is an update (especially tickets sold) coming this week?
A page from this source book explains how Godzilla is able to survive on Planet X--Although it doesn't explain how Rodan did it.
Here's the translation:
"Godzilla's body comes with very amazing lungs which work on other planets. On the dark side of Jupiter, Godzilla has lived and function well on the outer space planet: Planet X.
While the exact function of Godzilla's lungs remain a mystery to an extent, his lungs can withhold massive in takes of oxygen, allowing him to release little oxygen for long periods of time without the need of respiration.
When Godzilla appeared on Planet X, he was awoken from a state of slumber. Despite coming from Earth, his movements and functionality remained unchanged under the lifeless atmosphere of Planet X. This is noted strongly since Godzilla was also still capable of using the atomic energy inside his body."
On the same subject, from another book by Tomoyuki Tanaka, it's revealed the Showa Godzilla also had gills:
Hedorah is always stated to have been brought to Earth in a comet as a colony of microorganisms. Upon landing in Japan, the microbes fed on pollution and began combining together into a larger single Hedorah. They never say specifically where Hedorah is from aside from outer space, but during a scene where two characters discuss his origins, the film shows this image of the "Dark Gaseous Nebula of the Orion":

As for Mothra's lifespan, I think it's just easy to interpret from the films that her lifespan isn't particularly long, and part of her divine/immortal nature is the fact that she is perpetually reborn through her egg. There's three different generations of Mothra in the Showa series alone, so she certainly doesn't seem to live a very long time.
^you see that's the shit I want to hear. that makes sense to me. thank you
Anything in that book that talks about hedorah's origins or mothra's life span?
I think the most likely explanation is that Planet X's air is unsafe to breathe for humans, which is why they require spacesuits and helmets, but the Xiliens don't. Tomoyuki Tanaka's book, for what it's worth, says that Godzilla's lungs are able to work on other planets, allowing him to breathe normally in the different atmosphere of Planet X. I would assume the same goes for Rodan.
SpaceGodzilla is probably able to survive in the vacuum of space simply because he is the result of crystalline alien organisms absorbing Godzilla's cells. G-cells are likely able to remain alive in a vacuum, while the crystalline organisms that gave rise to SpaceGodzilla presumably survived in the vacuum of space to begin with.
^that's what im trying to say without sounding like an idiot! thank you. But my still doesn't give me a satisfying answer to whether of not they can breath in space or not.
Personally, I'd say that the oxygen content of Planet X is simply too low to be breathable by Humans, but daikaiju are just able to deal with that kind of stuff.
^Thank you. Im just asking because I realize Godzilla and Rodan both seem to have no problem breathing on Planet X.
Since there is water on planet x, the only movie that touches how Godzilla can breath and where he can breath is Shin Gojira when they talk about where he can live and breath anywhere as long as it has oxygen. I know that sounds silly when I type it out, but since Planet x doesn't have our atmosphere and I see the astronauts using their spacesuits to breath, that tells me that no earthling can survive on the surface of planet x. But since water can be found on the surface maybe that's how Godzilla is able to breath. same with Rodan
Hey what happened to Manda?
I know im opening up a can of worms here but Godzilla is not a dragon. Or at least not the traditional dragon we all know. He is some kind of dinosaur mutated from atomic radiation. Japan hasn't lost its sense of Godzilla, they are expanding his sense. Giving him new areas to expand. Godzilla can be lots of variations here. A hero, a bad guy, an anti-hero, a nightmare, a monster, a father, a friend, a anti-nuclear warning/message, a cartoon character, I can keep going here but you get my point. So whatever he is in this movie isn't all that far fetched.
Are we dealing with the Gyaos of the 90's or the Gyaos of the 60's?
With the picture above I'm guessing the 90's. The Gyaos have many advantages, but they cant win against such a force of all of Monster Island. Mothra, Rodan and Varan would be great feats for the Gyaos since they can all fly and fight. Seeing how well the monsters fought together in unison against King Ghidorah, Im sure they can come up with a basic battle plan to defend Monster Island. If Kumonga were to spin a protective web around the mountains on the island that would stop a lot of the Gyaos. Same with Mothra Larvae. Collectively those two can stop a wave of them just on there webs alone. But when that barrier eventually breaks down due to the Gyaos ray, the two might become chum.
Gabara(even thought he isn't in the same reality with Monster Island, and is a figment of a boys imagination, but for the sake of the discussion I will add him anyway) shouldn't be trusted, but im sure can take out a small number of Gyaos if they came on land. He would be taken out pretty quick. Minya even gave him a hard time. Imagine an adult Gyaos.
Anguirus, Gorosaurus, Baragon, and Minya. Anguirus can hold his own against many Gyaos. Baragon may take a few, but given his small size he could be easily carried away if he doesn't burrow underground to retreat. Gorosaurus im sure can take on an adult Gyaos, but a swarm of them? Nope, hes going to be taken out. Poor little Minya. Sure he can take out Gyoas with his atomic breath, but if the Gyaos don't blast right through him, he would be easy picken's for the Gyaos based on Minya's small size. Minya doesn't stand much of a chance if his Fathers not around.
Ebirah may have the element of surprise working for him, there isn't any known incidents where we know the Gyaos can even swim. But given the location of Monster island the Gyaos would need to eat and since the ocean provides the only food source outside of Monster Island, Ebirah can indefinitely starve out the Gyaos by grabbing whatever unsuspecting Gyoas that tries to grab any fish or dolphin and cut those buggers in half with his powerful claws. That goes on speculation that the Gyaos cant swim or breath underwater.
The Karmacurus would suffer a great loss in its population(Im assuming there would be a good number of them on the island). They can fly, they have sharp claws, but they are not all that powerful. They had a hard time trying to penetrate through Minya's egg and hide. So trying to combat fast and cunning adult Gyaos would be a hard time for the giant insects. I think the Gyoas would actually use the giant insects as a food source on the island, destroying that ecosystem. The Kamararus might even flee the fight altogether. I would not trust them.
Godzilla.... well... if Gamera can take on these overgrown bats, then Godzilla has this in the bag. Not saying there wont be blood. But Godzilla has his fighting experience, his weight, size, strength, his durability, his amphibian traits, and above all his atomic breath on his side. Godzilla can take on these guys.
The Gyaos are a great force if they have the numbers. If we are dealing with the Heisei Gyaos then Monster Island has a lot of problems if the Gyaos reach there full size before invading the island. If the gyaos are not full size then forget it, Monster Island has all of its size against these pests. The Gyaos ray is indeed their ace in the hole, but given the fact that the ray cant penetrate Gamera's hand, gives us a clue that the ray has its limits against fellow kaiju.
If this were the Showa Gyaos, we may want to take a moment and think about the possibility of how this could go down. As far as I know the Showa Gyaos are always big. There size is about the same as Godzilla. Their ray goes right through gamera's arm, but not through his shell. So you can either argue Gamera's durability against Godzilla's skin, or take it that the Showa Gyaos Ray is much stronger than the Heisei Gyaos. They also can regenerate there limbs completely! Something many Toho kaiju can not do with the exception of Godzilla and the Gargantua's and Frankenstein(I know the Gargantua's and the Franekenstein monster are the same). We don't see that ability in the Heisei version.
However, one of their biggest weaknesses in the Showa Gyaos is that they cannot stand the sunlight. It kills them! You cant take on Monster Island and win in one night and then fins shelter before the sun comes up. There is no way! All the monsters on Monster Island can fight day or night. If the Gyaos retreat to a nearby island to hide from the sunlight after attacking Monster Island, Godzilla and the crew are coming for you and attacking you during the day. If Godzilla and the others don't get to you, the destruction to there layer will expose the daylight and the sunlight will get them in the end.
The Losers- Gyaos
The Survivors - Godzilla, Anguirus, Varan, Rodan, Adult Mothra, and Ebirah.
"A legion." Huh?
And yet again...
Maybe not- depends where eggs are stored- possibly off island or somewhere in space?
Liked the new chapters, SFK.
THAT.. is very well done.
Detail is spot on.
Japan seems to have lost its basic sense of Godzilla. Godzilla is a Dragon. He is not a plant or a legion. All Amphibians and Reptiles are Dragon-types and the further evolutionary a creature is away from these base Dragons the less Reptilian life becomes. Groot is a perfect example in de-evolution from the Dragon into something else. Why change perfection? A Tyrannosaurs with Stegosaurs spikes and Iguana arms, No Otachi mouth or faces on the tail, and now scales not bark. Ill watch it but Im already upset with the design and if it's as bad as shin Ill only watch it once. Pretty shabby tellin someone Godzilla is making a movie and he isnt even in it. That's twice now Toho with two more announced. I hear they killed off a Grootzilla in this as well, not cool even if it is an imposter. Im still pissed off about that alleged murder crap they pulled in 54, 95, 98, and in GMK. The physical changes in 98 were shocking but nowhere near as off-Godzilla as Swamp thinging him. I was more pissed that they killed her in 98 than anything. Now we have a worst-case ugly dogface Grootzilla I can hardly look at next to shin and they still kill off the imposter. Yeah there is a bigger one alive yet but its still NOTZILLA!
Godzilla reigns supreme and will defeat Kong, but not killing him and they will team up to stop Destroyah in a DAM monster mash. Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra all have to fight Destroyahs of there own until the Destroyahs all merge into a super Destroyah where the monsters combine fires to kill him after Kong finds a way to freeze the final boss. Best case scenario...
I'm however very concerned and upset with the evolution of Godzilla. I think G14 is the closest thing to perfect that we can hope for other than 89 and 2000, G14 rules minus the gills. The Dragon/Dinosaur Godzilla is my father. Shin and Grootzilla arent even Godzillas. They are phony usurpers, imposters that lay siege to the throne of the world. Godzilla is at minimal a Reptile or Amphibian and as angry as I was in 98 at least we got a Lizard. So Shin 2 will be the walking dead and we finally get an anime and they turn a Dinosaur into a plant... I don't want to see the Legendary Godzilla lose his Dragon attributes and his bottom jaw had better not go to shin or they will have totally ruined it for me in the states as they did recently in Japan.
I wrote a book called Tiamatzilla vs the Kaiju Kongs in 2015 and am in the process of turning it into a graphic novel and movie as a failsafe for Godzilla in 2020. In my story, Tiamatzilla puts the Kaiju Kongs in there place and then teams up with them to save the world from a massive flying Kraken the size of a mountain.
I hope Godzilla and Kong Kong will become the new Batman and Robin of the Monsterverse and will bring us many new adventures while maintaining a healthy respect for all the Dragons in the series and keeping Godzilla classic. All weapons and even fictitious ones such as the oxygen destroyer will fail on Godzilla, Rodan and King Ghidorah. Dragons are invincible!
finally, something that isn't a repaint.
I love him as well.
i also put The Return of Godzilla along King Kong(1976)! Both I feel like both films are the best of there series. That King Kong movie is the best KK film of them all. Yes even more than Peter Jacksons remake. That along with one of my top favorite Godzilla movies is a great time.
cant wait
ALL HAIL GHIDORAH
CANT WAIT
TEAM GHIDORAH
I liked the movie only complaint would be the limited monster screen time
it'll do better when it comes to america.
New chapter. It's pretty short but introduces a big character.
I don't need it.
I don't need it.
I definitely don't need it.
I don't need it.

I'm just curious what the budget for the film was and what they're getting from their Netflix deal.
It's really not doing that well. It's okay for the amount of theaters, but I doubt it will make more than $5 million, which is pretty abysmal in the grand scheme of things.
well at least its doing well so far. I cant wait to see it on Netflix! im sure it will rake in a lot more money once it hits internationally.
