That's a really good point, I didn't really think about that. I always thought that the Tomatometer or whatever is called was pretty stupid because good movies, in my opinion, got sucky ratings a good portion of the time and bad movies get good ratings (also in my opinion) another large portion of the time. I didn't really think that the tomatometer actually somewhat changed the outlook of critics and dumbed down their words this much, so that was a very interesting and valid point.

Ultrazero80,
But the thing is, critics don't hate it. The positive reviews are very positive and the negative reviews aren't even all that bad.
This is the problem with Rotten Tomatoes--It has nothing to do with critics. We need critics to keep art in check. What we don't need is a percentage telling us how many of those critics liked or disliked a movie.
The "Tomatometer" tells us how many critics "liked" the movie, but it doesn't immediately give us the average score by critics. You have to click another tab in order to see what is [very] arguably more relevant. After all, what if a movie gets a 95% fresh rating, but the average score is 6.5 out of 10? What good is a 95% fresh score if most people grade it with a 65?
Even then you shouldn't be looking at the score critics give. You should be reading their words. As an English minor it's absolutely embarrassing how we've allowed Rotten Tomatoes reduce thought, analysis and words to an arbitrary number.
There used to be a day where you read reviews after you watched a movie. But now people have become dependent on a website where they don't even read reviews. They just look at some digits and throw a party when the numbers are high or claim, "critics know nothing, Jon Snow," when the percentage is low.
I was a film critic for nearly a decade. I can attest that Rotten Tomatoes has helped destroy film criticism. Too many websites, magazines and other publications require critics to conform to certain word counts and formats just so they can make it on the site. Some sell out so they can be listed as a "Top Critic" or "Featured Critic" on Rotten Tomatoes. This has perpetuated distrust between audiences and writers and it's unfortunate because it's the fault of Rotten Tomatoes more than anything.
It's the rise of this website that has stopped audiences from finding some intelligent things to read about film. Instead, they assume a critic's job is to tell people if a movie is good or bad. What's worse is that many critics today believe that's their job too.
Understand that's not the case. A film critic's job isn't to say whether a film is good or bad. Their job is to inspire audiences to think about a movie and engage it differently than they would have on their own. Yes, they do this by offering their opinions and views--Because new discoveries are made by going outside your box.
My recommendation is not to get mad at critics and be so close minded as to assume that they collectively, "don't understand" your favorite movies. My recommendation is to do your research. Find critics you trust - Listen to them - Let them help you engage with movies, whether you agree with them or not - And stop watching a tomato thermometer.

They nit-pick at everything. I get it's their jobs but movies like these are meant to be fun. But their are more audience viewers compared to critics. And audience reviews are rocking at 97%. So whos word are you gonna take. A few thousand people or a few hundred critics?
Godzillatheking123Godzilla ForumIgnore most of the reviewsMay 29, 2019Reply
It would be naive to pretend all critics are objective or don't come to a movie without an agenda. Sometimes their criticism has a solid basis and I can agree with them if they are well-reasoned. Sometimes they let their bias cloud their judgement. They may try to hide it with flowery phrases, but usually we can tell whether they are going to dismiss a movie before even watching it.
Since we are the true fans, our opinions are ultimately the most important.

I tend to think that critics like these don't fully understand Godzilla movies like we do, they probably expect a masterpiece of some sorts.
I'm sure we've come to expect that giant monster movies are dumb fun movies, you watch it for the monsters beating the hell out of each other. It doesn't need to be anymore than that.

That’s not to say none of them at all have legitimate criticism, I’m sure there are one or two who actually didn’t like something about. But at the end of the day people should really just form their own opinion about the movie after watching it.
Titan of WaterGodzilla ForumIgnore most of the reviewsMay 29, 2019Reply
Whether the movie is actually good or not is completely irrelevant to them, it was doomed to be panned by critics because:
1. It’s a Godzilla movie and a according to them all Godzilla movies are bad
2. It isn’t a Disney movie
3. Probably won’t follow the SJW narrative

I’m not gonna sit here and say that critics are always wrong, sometimes they have legitimate criticism. However, seeing the stellar reviews for The Last Jedi and Captain Marvel has kind made me loose a lot of faith in them. The main criticism they are giving is that there is too much Godzilla and not enough human focus. I would only have a problem with that if he was on screen for a ridiculous amount of time like 30 minutes like in MechaGodzilla 1993. If he’s on screen for a big chunk like 15-20 minutes I’m perfectly fine with that. Also, the screen time of the humans shouldn’t matter much as long as they’re interesting. It seems they are pulling the stopwatch bull crap but the other way around! So yea, in short, I’ll keep the criticisms in mind, but I’m gonna be really wary of them and really just judge the movie based on my opinion.

I never go with what the critics say. They sit there and nit-pick at every little thing that is wrong with it. And I get that's there job, but movies like these are meant to be fun. So yeah just don't listen to what a critics says. And if you are fan of what ever genre the movie is you will have fun regardless.

Yes it was fans that gave it bad reviews and it was the other side that made the claim those reviews were invalid for one reason or another trying to change the trend that they couldn't be trusted. The point being that RT may not always be right but there are valid reasons why people did or did not like a movie, and while it's not something to base everything off of, it's also not something to throw away and completely refuse to acknowledge.
Godzillatheking123Godzilla ForumWhy no scores yet for Godzilla on Rotten Tomatoes?May 29, 2019Reply
Im Durp: TLJ got stellar critic reviews on RT. 91% in fact. It was some of the fans who were up in arms over it, angry over the way Skywalker was treated in the movie.
There is a possibility the opposite could be true in this Godzilla movie, the critics do not like it but the fans will love it. But maybe I am a bit premature, since at this moment, only 46 reviews are counted, whereas a major Hollywood movie like this usually get 80+ reviews at least.

Assuming we take them as they are Gigan since he's over twice the size, if we scale them up Godzilla because FW Gigan has to be one of the dumbest monsters in the series.

Where exactly did I judge the movie, or jump to conclusions in my response? Maybe people who aren't part of the SW fandom don't know so I'll explain the joke. When TLJ received less than stellar reviews on RT many jumped on the idea it was only through vote spamming and bots that the score was low and the movie was great, since Godzilla has a low score I jokingly compared it to that, in no way did I say anything about the movie's actual quality in my post.

If you want to see it, get out and see it, and judge it for yourself. I rarely put much stock in what critics say, tbh. I look at RT scores for many movies, and I'm left scratching my head, so...

macumbalove and Im Durp, have you guys seen the actual film? Maybe you shouldn't jump to conclusions just yet? Don't always listen to critics. It is up to you whether you like the movie and not what the critics tell you to like.
I'm not going to insult the critics or call them childish names. They are entitled to their views and their expectations may simply not be the same as us godzilla fans. Don't let them decide what you see.
For balance, longtime Godzilla fan Mr H likes it and say the movie is for the fans, so that's a good contrasting balance with his non-spoiler review:

G. H. (Gman)Godzilla ForumGodzilla vs King Ghidorah 1991: Anti-American?May 28, 2019Reply
Godzillatheking123,
I think it mostly comes down to the idea that Shindo was a main character wanted us to sympathize with. In order to help set up Godzilla as a "heroic" figure against King Ghidorah and, later, Shindo's tragic end, he had to be painted as having a sort of bond with Godzilla. The best way to depict that, as far as Omori was concerned, was for Godzillasaurus to come to the rescue. And the only thing to rescue Shindo from was the American forces.
I think the resentment is there, but mostly at the expense of character work.

Godzilla vs Megaguirus: I find this one meh as well, but maybe a little bit worse than 2000. The main character is a Haruo type, only thinking about Godzilla and always saying how much she hates him and wants to kill him. The self-employed scientist guy was just your average comic relief, nothing really special about him. Look I know he was just a kid, but that little boy was an idiot. Did he really think taking the egg with him was a good idea? And worse, the main character says that the Meganula invasion wasn’t his fault! Uh, yea it was! Also, everyone seems so calm and sure that the black hole plan will work. It’s a BLACK HOLE! Don’t they realize how easily wrong it could’ve gone. I don’t care if it’s miniaturized, it still could’ve made untold death and destruction if it went wrong. If you want to know a scene that I actually though was really good, it was the back ally scene. It was kinda disturbing and reminded me of the aggregate Destoroyah Scenes. Megaguirus herself looks really creepy looking, but that effect is sort of lost because for the millionth time the wings are stiff. The fight between her and Godzilla itself is good, but like Millennium it drags on too long. Honestly this movie bored me to tears in some places, and I remember almost falling asleep during one scene. Watch this film only if you have the endurance. 2/5.

Godzilla 2000 Millennium: It’s okay, but it’s nothing really spectacular. The main character actually interested me a little bit. He has a past at a college that practiced unethical science, he has a friend who works on the opposing side, and he had an interesting sub-plot about using Godzilla’s cells for medical purposes (sadly it went nowhere.) Besides that however, he mostly felt like a a underdeveloped character to me. The female reporter was kind of annoying, she spent 90% of the movie complaining and moaning. The daughter is by the far the most bland character. She has very little screen time and her acting is almost as emotionless as Hayden Christiansen when he was in the SW prequels. I laughed when she was supposed to have an emotional moment with her dad after the blowing up tower scene, cause I could not believe they expected me to get teary-eyed over this girl. I love Katigiri, he’s just so over the top. He is just so over the top evil and he always had these big bulging eyes. Can you say ham? However, I though he would have worked better as a grey anti-villain rather than pure evil since considering his role as the protector of Japan. I will say Godzilla looks really good in this movie. It’s different but not too different. The green skin and purple dorsal plates go really well to together and the suit seems to be able to express a decent range of emotion (not as good as the Heisei suit though). I really didn’t care for Orga. He just seems like a combination of tropes of foes from previous Godzilla films. He does have a decent design, but I didn’t really see it as spectacular. The fight between Godzilla and Orga itself good, but it drags on way to long and I just wanted it to end after awhile. Overall, this movie is just kinda meh, 2/5.
