Dont worry, between character development and all the solo Muto action the film will be just fine. Wasnt the original Jurassic Park a longer movie than G14? In JP I beleive the total scene minutes with dinosaurs was @ 20 minutes in total. I could be off a little but was eye-opening when you think it was a 2 hour plus movie.

I think you are all jumping the gun based on one review (and that reviewer's subjective interpretation of whether we see enough Godzilla). This is hardly what I call clear evidence of whether we'll see enough of Godzilla in the film.

@Tailsman

While limits in special effects and the pioneering of a new visual style is possibly one of the reasons we saw little of Godzilla in the original film, the fact is it still worked and many today even believe he's on-screen longer than he is. That also doesn't explain the small amount of screentime Godzilla had in films like Monster Zero, Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla...etc...

I think the "safe" approach would have been to bombard Godzilla in the viewers faces, ala Transformers. He even said himself that he, "resisted the temptation" to overdo the CGI and tell a more compelling story not saturated with it. It seems most new, young and fresh directors have more of an all-in approach:

Young, early directors Colin Strause and Greg Strause attempted the opposite of Edward's philosophy with Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem and Skyline. Both were abysmal movies. Gavin Hood's first foray into Hollywood Blockbusters was pitting more action than story into X-Men Origins: Wolverine. A safe, young, blockbuster filmmaker sounds like someone who has an impulse for all-out action/effects. That's not how Edwards is reading.

We can project fears of "not seeing Godzilla as much as we'd like" all we want, but if anyone's going to judge the movie for Godzilla's screentime then I'd recomend backtracking to other Godzilla movies where he has more screentime. They'll always have those.

I am agree. I cannot make a good judgement unless I watch it. So I hope this does not turn into something like my "Loch Ness Horror" experience. When I was a kiddo I saw the trailer in a old VHS "Fantastic Dinosaurs from the Movies", where depicts how were created the old monster movies, but the highlight was the compendium of old trailers, from classics like Godzilla: King of the MOnsters and Harryhausen productions, to cheap B movies like the GIant CLaw and The GIant Gila Monster. I loved those trailers, and one that caught my special attention was about the movie featuring Nessie: Loch Ness Horror. I always wanted to see that movie, but very recently I got that chance, and I was very dissapointed because the trailer already shown ALL NESSIE APPEARENCES ON THE FILM, or at least over the 95% of those. The film was pretty short, simplistic and had really bad acting.

I tend to like the cheesyness of B movies, but this hit the bottom. Maybe this is an extreme comparision, but I would be upset if the

GMAN2887,

Here is the way I look at it. Ultimately, we all have to see the film for ourselves. However, it does seem likely that Godzilla won't be in the film as much as some might  like.

Now I realize that the original film also took a similar approach, however, that was the 1950s and they didn't have access to the amount of visual effects that we have today. I think it quite likely that if they did, we would have seen a lot more of Godzilla and not only him, but what he could do.

Also, I still don't get why they would hide him and build him, but then show him in the trailers?

My personal feeling is that Edwards is a new director and less willing to take risks and went with a more "safe" approach to Godzilla.

In the end that actually might work. More people will be captivated and it may in fact cause people to want to see the film again.

Well, the original film needed a real support from the human characters due represented their struggle against a terrible disaster and Godzilla had a stand-alone appearence. If really need such support here I hope the plot and the acting is good enough to bring it, because personally I got bored easily when I do not find  what I am looking for, monsters fights in this case. I need to admit there some movies with good plot besides the monster action and the original film is a remarkable example of that; the second place on the series, at least for me, is Godzilla vs Biollante. It has a good background over the characters, specially when we see SHiragami tragic story and how he laments her daughter death, and the entire complot around the G-cells. That maked a good story, and it was needed because the new kaiju co-star, Biollante, did not do much at all.

^A lot of this smacks of a lot of over-thinking. Seems to me the cast and crew are very confident in the film they've produced and believe this is the best way to go about it.

$50 says much of it leads up to a climatic and fullfilling third act not unlike that of Jaws which is becoming a strong comparison from the cast and crew every day.

And I said fan reviews, not tweets.

Reply
talismanGodzilla 2014 ForumYou Won't See Much Godzilla in "Godzilla"

Which tweets are you talking of? I know, there was a review I seen online, and the person seemed to like the movie quite a bit.

If it is true that Godzilla doesn't have much time in the movie, then I am not sure what the director was thinking. That to me suggests a lack of confidence in showing more Godzilla. It will obviously anger many Godzilla fans, but, Edwards did say he made the film for himself and not really the fans.

It seems that this movie is trying to reach a larger audience and not so much playing to the Godzilla fanbase as much.

Lets be realistic though. How much Godzilla is too much and how much is not "not much?"

that is a difficult thing to know.

We will have to wait and see though. Its not a good idea though to irk your main fan base or ignore their wants and desires.

I think what it comes down to is that Edwards would be taking a hugh chance with his career if he went all out. The movie would flop he is probably thinking, and then he is more or less done as a film maker for a bit.

If he plays it safe, he has more of a chance and what safer way then to play "the human card?"

The other thing to note. If they are so worried about showing Godzilla too much, why is he being shown in the trailers? If your film has Godzilla in the background, and your building the climax of him etc, why then show him in the trailers?

The old adage 'less is more' might be cliche but its cliche for a reason. I can enjoy a solid build-up to the big reveal. It worked for some of my favorite movies, like Jurassic Park and Alien.  And as much as I liked movies like Pacific Rim and Godzilla: Final Wars the plot was thin and there was no real suspense or mystery.

Reply
G. H. (Gman)Godzilla 2014 ForumYou Won't See Much Godzilla in "Godzilla"

I'm really not concerned about this. And never was. He's right about how many shots Jurassic Park has in it and Godzilla was only on-screen for 17 minutes in the original film. The thing is Godzilla's presense was felt thorughout the original movie and that's what counts. I'd be happy if the same goes down in this movie.

Quality not quantity, folks.

Besides those first two reviews from casual fans were certainly fullfilled so that's good enough from the fan standpoint.

Destroyah-xGodzilla 2014 ForumWhich movie do you think will dominate the box office?

I think Spiderman 2 literally cheated its way to massive takings through the use of its marketing materials. Having watched the show, I thought the movie was a bit too stretched out, the storyline wasn't particularly fantastic, and the worst thing is that the most exciting scenes of the movie are actually the ones already being played out repeatedly in the Spiderman 2 trailers, except for the unexpected ending.

So basically the most exciting parts are already in the trailers, making people think Spiderman 2 is gonna be fantastic, and in that respect, I think the marketing people have succeeded in 'cheating' the moviegoers.

For Godzilla, I think the marketing is doing a great job too, it seems a lot of people on my Fb list have been posting statuses like: '" Can't wait to catch Spiderman 2, Godzilla and Xmen Days of Future Past. "

With Godzilla released in between these two epic movies, there's no worry of competing for the same pie because they are in a different league, and these 3 movies combined will make a hell of a movie season.

Mothra's duration in the Millennium series was leaps and bounds better than her 1990s appearances... She looked like a plush doll in both the Heisei series and the Mothra Trilogy. Tokyo S.O.S. was the best Mothra had looked since 1964.

I think this could answer my question above... I start thinking the Mutos will have a hive-like community: the big thing there is a Queen, because the shape of the body reminds me the inflated abdomen of a termite queen, which has to lay eggs continiously. All the smaller Mutos are always seeking for food in order to bring it back to the nest(s) to feed the Queen and larvaes. Everything it is mere speculation but matches perfectly to the concept of entire vessels like cargo ships or submarines carried away to mainland, so the war head with the eggs attached to it.

Eh it's hard to tell at this time.

MOST likely, MUTO is an acronym for the monsters, while Monarch is the organization.

It's also possible that MUTO is the acronym for the organization, while Monarch is the organization's leader.

It hasn't been 100% confirmed yet in any case.

I'm not a 'nay sayer', I just try to keep things real. I mean you REALLY think Godzilla is going to make $300 mil in its opening four days??? Really??? If so, I applaud your optimism I guess, but objectively I just don't see it.

Because that's exactly what Spiderman is doing right now. It already actually has $150 mil, and it's not even Friday.

I'm not saying Spiderman will be the better movie. In fact, I'm 95% sure Godzilla will be the better film. Unfortuantely, Box Office receipts don't usually go to the better film though.

And keep in mind, as I've mentioned in other threads, Godzilla vs. .....insert movie here.... battle really is not important. The more important thing (to me anyway) is that Godzilla gets a sequel. To get a sequel, it needs around $500 mil, which it is tracking to get, which is awesome!!! Godzilla originally wasn't tracking that high 3-4 months ago, so great work marketing team!!!. In that sense, mission accomplished :-)

I've been asked this question many times in school. When they asked who will dominate the box office for May 2014, everybody was saying Amazing Spiderman 2 or X-men. When I said Godzilla, everybody was laughing. Anyways, I saw a review on the AS2 and the reviewer said it was the WORST super hero film in history. X-men, meh. I am not liking what I am seeing. They just wanna get money and use it for their own good. Looks like AM2 is like an advertisment to AS3 (Yes, you heard me right. Their will be an AS3 in 2016) and that tells us that they don't care about the films, they just want money. XMDOFP (X-Men Days Of Future Past) looks very disapointing. The pic's they've released of the characters are horrible. Godzilla on the other hand, looks like the production really payed attention to the film and weren't even thinking of sequels (Cough cough Amazing Spiderman 2...). On many "Top 10 most anticipated movies of May/year", Godzilla is either #1 or if not, it is in the list. Overall, I think the "God of Kaiju" will dominate the box office. Hopefully the Kaiju genre is reborned!

Spiderman is going to win out easily. It ALREADY has over $150 mil worldwide (healthily outpacing Captain America 2, which itself is resting at $650 mil), is tracking for a $95 mil opening in the U.S. and hasn't opened in some of the largest international markets yet, such as China. So that's $300 mil, basically in the bag/on the books before we even hit next Monday.

It won't be a better movie, but it will be the more popular movie. It has an uncontested release date, and MOST of it's reviews are positive. Maybe just slightly above average positive, but still positive. More importantly, most people are saying this Spiderman was better than Andrew Garfield's first one, which logged $750 million. So expect this Spiderman to rake in AT LEAST that much, $850 mil or more probably.

X-Men vs Godzilla??? This one will will be a more interesting contest.

The previous X-Men (even the popular ones) sat around the $450 million range. However, this is by far the most popular cast ever assembled for X-Men (let's face it, the whole world has gone gaga over Jennifer Lawrence for some reason), and with the last two films getting good reviews, and this X-Men the most likely of the three films to bring in a female audience, this X-Men is poised to be the strongest one of the whole series at the Box Office (not best X-Men movie, just best Box Office). I'd give X-Men a $550-600 mil estimate.

Godzilla itself is already tracking into the $500 mil ish range, with $60 mil estimated on opening weekend, and 2-4 more weekends of 50% declines after that, and a basically guaranteed $300 mil overseas. More if China picks it up. Godzilla also has the strongest reviews I think, despite having a stronger negative predisposition to overcome.

Godzilla vs X-Men will be close, with X-Men having the SLIGHT edge at this point. If X-Men specifically gets BAD reviews, I could see Godzilla only dropping 30%-40% in weeks 2 and three, while X-Men might see 50-60% drops instead of Godzilla. If they both get good/okay reviews however, I see X-Men nudging out Godzilla...but by less than $100 mil.

Whoever wins May, wins the Summer most likely, as later competition is actually weaker. How to Train Your Dragon 2, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and Guardians of the Galaxy being less likely candidates to contend, but not so weak as to be outright dismissed.

On the year, The Hobbit is probably the winner of 2014, and probably one of the only 2014 films to cross $1 billion worldwide. Christopher Nolan's Interstellar remains a dark horse in the Box Office race until we get a trailer. Almost everything Nolan has touched in the past 10 years has been Box Office AND Cinematic Gold, and everyone knows it. As such, Interstellar will make bank either way, but it really depends on what kind of piece this is. If more of a niche, artsy thing, maybe less than $600 mil. If something with broader appeal, yeah, it tops a bil, and maybe wins the whole damn race.

Maybe it is not a tentacle what stabbed the guy in the drawing above, maybe it is piercing tongue like Barugon or Zedus from Gamera series.... But What puzzles me is the drawing where it is said "And the I saw it. A Monster summoned by our own monstrosity". What is the thing that senior Serizawa was looking at??? Godzilla was on the other blocks, but I cannot determine the shape of the thing merging from the rubble and smoke.

He's a bit more to scale, yes, but it's still not accurate.  The max height of the Eiffel Tower, from base to the tip of the antenna, is 324 meters or 1,063 feet.  Godzilla is 350 feet tall.  Still, having Godzilla shown from more of a side angle makes this a better image than the San Francisco one, even if he never goes to Paris in the film.

Judging from this, entirely speculation of course, we can guess that the MUTO organisms, if that is what that creature is, were originally squid-like creatures.

BUT, if that thing turns out to be an entirely new kaiju. Again. Well. We've got a load on our hands. A nice one.
