Variety is reporting the next Fast & Furious movie will open Memorial Day weekend, 2020--The same as Godzilla vs. Kong. The knee jerk reaction is that the competition is stiff, but I have a feeling Legendary may move Godzilla vs. Kong for two reasons:
1) These studios don't want tentpole movies cannibalizing each other. And in this case Godzilla vs. Kong is the underdog--The last two Fast/Furious movies made well over $1 billion at the box office. Even when you add the worldwide gross of Godzilla '14 and Kong: Skull Island together, they equal the $1.5 billion and $1.2 billion grosses of the last two Fast/Furious films. Legendary can't risk it and may likely move GvK.
2) If they move it back a few weeks, this could potentially give Wingard and his team a little more time to work in post. There's been many occasions where studios delay a film to give it more post time. Godzilla: King of the Monsters got far more post-production time than most blockbusters these days. Likewise, should Godzilla vs. Kong wrap shooting soon, I don't think the film would necessarily need the extra time--But in case there's a catastrophic circumstance regarding the film's production it might be in Legendary's favor to give the movie some extra breathing room.
The date move is of course speculation on my part. But if Legendary decides to pit Godzilla vs. Kong against the next Fast/Furious flick, both films will suffer. Godzilla vs. Kong will likely take the harder hit since Fast/Furious is a more popular and proven franchise.
