Happy Birthday to Teruyoshi Nakano, special effects director of Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Godzilla vs. Gigan, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla, Terror of MechaGodzilla and The Return of Godzilla. He's 82.

He had a thankless job more difficult than his late mentor, Eiji Tsuburaya--Pull off the same spectacle at a fraction of the cost. A lot of people look down on his pre-1980s work, but I admire what he was able to accomplish with so little. He showed more resourcefulness and experimentation than most effects directors in the series. As a result he's one of my favorites.

Glad he's still with us. Which film do you think features his best work?

I'm going to have to wear a bag on my head for this one, but Nakano's birthday is actually Monday the 9th. Oh well. He's worth celebrating throughout the weekend. Love this guy.
