GODZILLA: TOKYO S.O.S.

Mothra and the Shobijin visit their old friend Dr. Shinichi Chujo for massive request; they wish for humanity to return the original Godzilla's bones, or Kiryu, to the sea. As the Japanese government wrestles with Chujo's message from the Shobijin Godzilla returns more vicious than before. When Mothra arrives to battle Godzilla, Prime Minister Igarashi declares Kiryu will aid Mothra and be decommissioned. But when the unlikely allies fall in battle Chujo's nephew, Yoshito, may be the only hope of repairing Kiryu and stopping Godzilla once and for all.

GMAN2887 - This was actually a very interesting conclusion to Godzilla's first round wih Kiryu! I found the aspect of Godzilla's original spirit inhabiting the bones upon which Kiryu's frame was built to be a bit, hmm, let us say interesting. However, despite my slight uncertainty with that aspect, I was still moved at the end when Kiryu told Yoshito farewell. Not only that, but to see Dr. Chujo was a fantastic treat! :)

I look at Kiryu as G'54 brought back to life and manipulated. The idea that Mothra's Shobijin would step in and disavow what man has done with the remains of a being that's suppose to be dead wasn't far fetched in the grand scheme of things and I was waiting for them to touch on that in the first movie.

Godzilla 2000 and Tokyo SOS are easily my two favorite movies in the Millennium series. Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla did a good job of establishing that while none of the other Godzilla movies were in its timeline other monster movies were like War of the Garagantuas and Mothra. This was good for allowing other monsters to come in without there being much of a surprise.

The Mothra puppet looks amazing too. Probably the best she's ever looked they did a good job of making her Seem old, but they had the technology this time to actually show her rather than do what 62 did and film basically every shot she was in with Godzilla in extreme closeups with dust flying everywhere, and didn't follow heisei with a puppet could only move it's head and barely at that.

GMAN2887 - You know, the view you have presented actually makes a great deal of sense to me? How fantastic! I shall definately view Tokyo S.O.S in a different light thanks to the perspective you have offered! :)

DURP004 - Ideed! Mothra in S.O.S was gorgeous! The way in which her wings moved had a certain organic feel that I greatly enjoyed! :)

Mothra was one of the best parts of the movie. She hadn't looked that good since 1964.

It's an ok movie, not one of my favorites but it's not terrible, it was just really bland to me

Mothra not only looked great, perhaps her best in the Series, but she was heroic. She took on Godzilla and made the ultimate sacrifice for her young. Later, Kiryu makes a similar sacrifice by taking Godzilla to the ocean's depths. And he's not just a machine, as he says sayonara to Yoshito. Akiba and Azusa put themselves in harm's way to save Yoshito.

The three-way, knock-down, dragout between Godzilla, Kiryu and Mothra is worth the price of admission itself.

The ending would have made a fitting conclusion to the series.

Ideas in Godzilla, Mothra, Mechagodzilla:Tokyo S.O.S. are simply not developed.

The conflict between Yochito and Akiba over Azuza.

That a high ranking government official doesn't want his son, Akiba, to see combat.

That Kiryu is being rushed into battle when it isn't really ready.

Anyone of the above could have been explored and mined for interesting, and, maybe even intriguing subplots.

The effects are very good, and the action is almost non-stop once it starts.

None of the characters have any edge to them. Akiba was close. But he actually comes off as slightly psychotic.

All in all, though, GMMG is one of my favorites. The ending with the mid-air rescue is visually stunning. The post credit sequence, a Masaaki Tezuka trademark, with his requisite cameo, and laboratory PA annoucement was flawless.
