Yes! This is the official Toho Godzilla 2016 discussion thread, to stop clutter, here you will discuss everything you have to say about the Revival of the Japanese Godzilla! It can be anything from, his design, to the plot of the film.
Here is what i have to say on certain questions: "What will the plot be about?" I think it will be a solo Godzilla film, maybe even a remake of 1954 since they have never done that before.
"What will Godzilla look like?"I think he will be broad and intimidating like Heisei, yet lean and Muscular like Final wars.
So thats my questions, you discuss anything you want about the film now! Power to the King!
Good grief.

Hey Guest, want to add your say?

Well, they said in the film that the EMP's effected every thing electrical for 5 miles, so without electricity in the winter time, we would freeze to death. However, hospitals would also loose alot of lives especially those on life support. The main thing the EMP's could have done was hit the powergrid here in the U.S. Every thing electrical would have been knocked out completely, then what do we do?
http://hugeben.deviantart.com/ check out my gallery of Godzilla artwork! Follow me on Twitter@thebigbadben90.

There's also the fact that EMPs short out fuses meaning even after they left it wouldn't come back on, and they wouldn't be a fast fix. It be a walking blackout leaving people in its wake. Cars, phones, everything in that path between Vegas and San Francisco would be dead. People would be missing with no transportation or ability to call for help. Any city would be rendered useless. Basically becoming giant hollow castles to provide shelter but nothing else. People would be at a loss, especially the younger generation, the dependence on electrical conveniences is crazy for us. All of that could hve been looked at, maybe have Ford go through on of the cities, and see the effects rather than just Hawaii which was devestated from the tsunami and attacks, an electrical attack would be diffferent though, a seemingly untouched city that lays there empty.

Well, this has nothing to do with Toho's Godzilla, but what do you guys think of this?

Although, not 100% legit, but Legendary did say that they would try to make King Ghidorah more Smaug looking. I think this falls into that catagory.
Back to the topic though, I hope that Toho gets enough courage and confidence to release their new movie world wide.

I think Durpoo4'a idea is great, intriguing actually. A scary sub-text to a kaiju film makes it that much more enjoyable as there are threats coming from different directions. This is especially true if the new perils are caused by something the kaiju does or a power he has.
Part of the fascination in this is seeing how the people rise to and respond to the threats. Anything which brings out the best in people and showcases the better aspects of human nature, is good.
It just has to be well-written and performed with passion, wthout being over the top, so to speak.
One thing still bugs me, and yes, at this stage, maybe its too early to tell, but would Toho Godzilla 2016 get a wide release in North America? I'll hate to have to search for it through only some specialty cinema or wait XX years for it to be released on DVD here.

^I don't think it will get a wide theatrical release in North America. I see Legendary aquiring it for a North American DVD/Bluray for sure and perhaps putting it in some specialty theaters simply for promotional sake.
I also don't think we would have to wait much more than a year. The Millennium films came out pretty quickly (under Sony) after each film was released in Japanese theaters and with Godzilla in the limelight again we won't have to wait as long as we did with the Heisei series.
In addition, Toho seems insistant on producing something very special. If it's as notable as they hope distributors will be more inclined to aquire it fast.

^Makes sense to me. With Legendary partnered with Universal now, chances are we will see the new film released via Universal Home Video on DVD/BD. It could see a limited theatrical run ala Tristar and Godzilla 2000, but time will tell... ;)

^Considering the deal for new Godzilla movies is between Legendary and Warner Brothers (regardless of the partnership) I think we might still see it released under the WB banner. Toho has made no agreements with Universal.
Although I might be getting ahead of myself. I have no idea whether or not the new deal with Legendary includes home video/theatrical distribution of any kind. For all we know that deal may still fall with Sony.
And Godzilla 2000 was actually a wide release. I think if the 2016 film got released in theaters it would be more like a release that Godzilla '54 got this past year and in 2004. Although that film toured small specialty and art theaters around the country. I'm betting it'll simply come out in select cities' arthouse theaters for a few days or so. (If it is released at all.)

Hi guys, here is a couple of things we have yet to discuss for this new Toho godzilla film, and that is his height and weight.
From 1954-1975 godzilla was 50 meters tall or 164 feet.
From 1984-1989 godzilla was 80 meters tall or 262 feet.
From 1991-1995 godzilla was 100 meters tall and also in 2004, which is 328 feet tall.
Godzilla 2000 and vs. megaguirus, godzilla was 55 meters tall.
GMK, godzilla was 60 meters tall.
Legendary godzilla is 108 meters tall, 355 feet.
The weight have varied also with these different heights.
Personally, i would not mind godzilla reaching 120 meters tall for the first time ever, but i am more comfortable with godzilla ranging between 50-80 meters. How do you guys feel regarding this issue? How tall would you like him to be?
http://hugeben.deviantart.com/ check out my gallery of Godzilla artwork! Follow me on Twitter@thebigbadben90.

Honestly, if it's for toku, I like Godzilla to be smaller. A smaller Godzilla makes for more detailed miniatures which is one reason why the miniature sets in the later Heisei movies and Final Wars looked so bland. I'm all for 50 meters.

I completely agree gman. I also would like to see Yukijiro Hotaru play a role in this film. I loved his acting in the gamera heisei trilogy, along with GMK.
http://hugeben.deviantart.com/ check out my gallery of Godzilla artwork! Follow me on Twitter@thebigbadben90.

^Agreed wholehearredly.
He is a fan favorite and a link to the Heisei Gamera films and GMK. Having him in Toho Godzilla 2016 would be a nice tip-of-the-hat. It would be good to see him, even if he doesn't do his usual shtick, i.e., the panicked, reluctant comedy foil thust into the midst of events they are way beyond his control.
Of course, it would be better if he did.

As for Godzilla's size, I would like to see at about 60 meters as he was in GMK. As Gman2887 mentioned, it makes for better, more detailed and therefore more convincing miniatures.
I really love the miniature work in Gamera, Giant Monster Mid-Air Battle.

Glad to know that I'm not the only one who likes his acting.
@Gman2887,
My question to you this, do you want Godzilla to be tough like showa or with regenerative powers like heisei? You know, it won't bother me if he has regenerative powers. I do like his toughness though from showa.
http://hugeben.deviantart.com/ check out my gallery of Godzilla artwork! Follow me on Twitter@thebigbadben90.

I vote for Showa-Tough. Especially if an early, Showa-like design is used (e.g., Shodai-Goji, Mosu-Goji, etc.)

Yep, everyone loves a tough Godzilla. Hopefully it could match that of the original, mosugoji, or even the GMK design.
GMK just goes to show how tough the showa was. I mean it took a hell of an attack from king ghidorah to puncture a hole above his left shoulder, no healing powers needed for the rest of the fight though.

I also wish that Nick Adams was still alive to play a role in this Godzilla movie. I loved him in both invasion of astro monster and Frankenstein conquers the world.
By the way, Gman2887 your birthday gift is completed. :)
When I send it in the PM I hope you like it.

Nick Adams is the reason why Monster Zero (Invasion of the Astro Monster) is the only Godzilla film that I prefer to watch in English. His lines, his character are a great part of what makes this film so much fun. I love this film, one of the best of the Series.

@BigBadBen:
The GMK-Goji is a great, imposing design, scary, even. It's a great example of a design fitting the atmosphere and story of the film it's in.
If Toho goes with something like it, I'll be a happy man.

The GMK suit feels to fake, the pure white eyes never made any sense to me it just made him look Demonic which he didn't need to look like.
And they made him way overpowered, i mean a Nuclear explosion beam? I understand for homaging purpose's but why couldnt 54 do that? Why is GMK so damn special? Sorry that part just kind of irked me.
GMK should have hade 54's amazing breath and should have been the same suit just for nostalgia, and he didn't even need white eyes make the 54 suit a bit more detailed if they must.
Good grief.

For me, the GMK-Goji personified the rage of a giant monster, mutated by nuclear weapons and angry at Japan for having precipitated Wortld War Two. The design conveys this, and it is at the heart of the story. Just look at Professor Isayama's riveting narration of the reasons behind his return and why the Guardian Monsters must be awakened. Godzilla is a menace in GMK; not the savior of Japan or it's guardian.
In an article penned by Norman England for Fangoria, Shusuke Kaneko said regarding Godzilla in GMK:
"The Godzilla in GMK will be different from recent Godzillas. Godzilla is malicious and relentless, having been given life by the spirits of WWII dead. Godzilla is at its heart the specter of war. Recent directors have tried too hard to create sympathy for Godzilla. This is wrong. Godzilla should be cruel throughout the whole film."
Then he said:
"Godzilla is a force. He is not something that can be stopped by human weapons. He is brutal and severe. My Godzilla will be the cruest and fiercest in the history of the series."
And he was.
And this is one of the many reasons why Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack is so special.

"GMK should have hade 54's amazing breath and should have been the same suit just for nostalgia, and he didn't even need white eyes make the 54 suit a bit more detailed if they must."
Why? It is never established in the film that it is the same Godzilla from 1954 and the ambiguity of its genesis is part of why it's mysterious eyes and powerful ray made so much sense.
And nothing should ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever be done JUST "for nostalgia."

Jamaal, I would also like to add that Tomoyuki Tanaka also stated that having Godzilla become a hero was a bit of a mistake and that they had to make him mean and destructive again. That's why in the return of Godzilla in 1984, he was a force of destruction once again. Godzilla is after all the embodiment of the atomic bomb, and a result of man's arrogance.
http://hugeben.deviantart.com/ check out my gallery of Godzilla artwork! Follow me on Twitter@thebigbadben90.

GMK is not the 1954 Godzilla, they specifically said that the first Godzilla attack was repulsed, the animal was killed by using an unknown chemical compound. The inventor has since died, and his records have been lost.
GMK, Godzilla is another reason why we would like to see Shusuke Kaneko get another shot at Godzilla but, he won't. I have an article written by Matt Frank that says Kaneko already made his Godzilla film.
http://hugeben.deviantart.com/ check out my gallery of Godzilla artwork! Follow me on Twitter@thebigbadben90.

^Well, why couldn't he re-manifest or re-grow his body like he would no doubt have done eventually around his still beating heart? If Godzilla in GMK was a supernatural force, than he would, like a ghost, always find a way to return. Isayama states that the creature cannot be defeated by ANY weapon... the "Unknown chemical compound" stopped him... but did not kill him.

That's one problem I have with GMK is the origin especially in the english subs and dubs. It's one thing to be obscure and another thing to be outright confusing. Original godzilla or new one? Ghost or animal, possed or natural. All these are addressed but none have any answers, aaccording to the movie he's in some way all of the above depending on what characters you ask. As for design I don't really have a problem with the suit from the neck up, but I think that the only reason it really stand out is due to the abilities it had moreso than the design maybe if any other millennium suit could at least turn its head much less make facial expressions it wouldn't be so recognized. It was impressive though. I'm split on the white eyes, I don't think they'd really work in a movie outside a supernatural evil Godzilla. They were a nice touch, but I wouldn't like to see them again

I've always felt that the idea Godzilla reginerated from nothing for GMK and/or after the fact was taking fan speculation about his regeneration to the absolute silliest level.
First did the GMK Godzilla even have super regenerative powers? I don't think he did otherwise his neck wound would have healed during the battle. Even if it was the 1954 Godzilla with regenerative powers why did he "regenerate" to be 10 meters taller? Besides, Kaneko, like Tezuka, is a fan of the older Godzilla films where regeneration hadn't been mentioned or was even considered. I doubt he had that ability in mind when he made the film.
And he wasn't necessarily a supernatural force either. His rage was certainly fueled by them, but that's it. He wasn't a ghost, he wasn't a spirit, he was an enraged animal carrying the unrest of Pacific conflict within him.
As for the heart beating at the end, I think it means and stands for many things. But the very, very, very last thing it stands for is that Godzilla is going to "regenerate" from it. I absolutely despise how fans take that scene so literally.

Yeah, I think that heartbeat meant that Godzilla was not done with as far as that being the final installment. Hopefully with the resurrection of this new Godzilla, we can get at least 5-7 films in total depending on how successful each movie is.

I believe this new Godzilla will be a stand alone film due to the Legendary series. It may just be me, but it feel's like they are doing this just to sort of...do it. I think they just feel like doing a Godzilla movie, i dont think they will make more until after Legendary is over.
Good grief.

Huh, i always thought GMK was 1954. Still, the white eye's were to corny, he could have still been a evil demonic beast for you, "Destruction" lover's but he did not need the white eye's and the fat belly kind of took away the fear factor.
However i fear im going to be hated on for that. The new suit should look nothing like GMK, it need's to be something we haven't seen before, if not that then maybe the original suit would be great.
Now here is something you all are forgetting, this Godzilla most likely will be fighting another monster. We need to flush out what he will look like for this task, the original 1954 suit wasn't the best at combat, he was ferocious indeed, but he didn't compare to the likes of the later Showa, even Godzilla 2014.
I think he will be muscular like Heisei, yet will have 1954 features. But he is most likely going to be 60-80 meters.
Good grief.

^But we thought that when the new Legendary movie was announced. Sounds to me they'll keep going if it's successful. Why not? Getting a Godzilla movie from another country in between each other sounds like a likely scenerio that keeps Godzilla in the limelight.
No company makes this big of an announcement with likely plans to re-organize how they approach filmmaking from year-to-year, "just to do it". That severely undermines how huge this really is.
"...just to do it." "...just for nostalgia." "...the film may be better in terms of story and nostalgia but it can never be the, "Better film." Gorilla... When did you last take your meds?

I often ask myself that Gman2887.
GG,
No one here is going to deny your passion for G14, we understand just how much you love it. We just want a Godzilla film that is going to reboot and resurrect Tohos franchise. It's how it started, and most likely how it will end when the time comes.
Gman2887, send me a Pm, I need to talk to you privately. :)
It's about your birthday present. :)

Now, if we are getting a vs. film, I would like to see old monsters like Hedorah, Megalon, Gigan, Biollante, and even King Kong to come back. Mothra, Mecha Godzilla, and of course King Ghidorah are the main money hitters. It would be nice to see Varan to have his match against Godzilla as well. Heck, it would be nice to see Anguirus again.
http://hugeben.deviantart.com/ check out my gallery of Godzilla artwork! Follow me on Twitter@thebigbadben90.

The white eyes of the GMK-Goji were meant to represent his malevolent nature along with the fact that he is possessed by the spirits of the soldiers who died in the Pacific War.
In GMK, Godzilla is literally and figuratively the specter of war. He's a physical being as well as a symbol. The eyes enhance his menace and destructive nature.

Right on Jamaal, so in other words, we need and want this Godzilla to represent something.

Gman- ......
Well maybe i didn't word some things correctly.
Hey, im all for a resurrection of Toho's Godzilla, just it need's to be done in a way to make it most successful. Man i didn't realize the hate that would be coming at me from my word's, perhaps i should just leave this thread alone.
Good grief.

Jamaal- Good point's, but still he white eye's were just to corny in my opinion. There are many way's to make Godzilla Menacing, heck, we all thought 2014 was going to be menacing when we first saw him.
Good grief.

GG,
No one is hating on you. If I personally made u feel like I hated on you then I apologize. If I hated you, I wouldn't talk to you. You can't take things to heart though when we discuss a fictional character like Godzilla. We all have an undying passion for this famous franchise, that's why we continue to discuss things. Technically, there is no perfect Godzilla film, they all have some sort of flaws to them.

As Shinoda said in Godzilla 2000, join our network, you will learn something. :)
So, no. Don't leave, we all care for Tohos next installment, we want the best for it. :)

Thanks alot BBB :).
Perhaps we could change the subject to more on the lines of how the plot will go, what do you guys think currently?
Good grief.
