!!GODZILLA MOVIES GETTING AN ULTRA-HD MAKEOVER!!

At a humble Tokyo laboratory, Godzilla, including the 1954 black-and-white original, is stomping back with a digital makeover that delivers four times the image quality of high definition.

The craftsmen at the lab made a point to keep visible the wires from which the flying monsters hung. The goal was to stay true to the intention of the original.

In turning Godzilla films into 4K, each frame of the reel-to-reel is scanned by a special machine. Each frame is then examined for blotches and other damage that has crept in over the last 60 years. Any problems with a frame are fixed on a computer, one by one, by a film-processing specialist.

hoko Ideriha, one of the specialists, said the team pieced together the best segments, working with the only three copies left of the 1954 Godzilla. She compared fixing film to being a doctor treating a patient.

The details of the cityscape models, the bumpy skin of Godzilla and the metallic shine of the robots are revealed as they once were.

To bad I won't be able to experience 4k since that's way beyond my price range

Here's hoping these restorations will be better than Toho's previous HD restorations. They practically did all 29 movies in 14 months. That's about as sloppy as you can get. This sounds promising, but I doubt Toho's going to foot the bill to have each film cleaned up this well.

I'm not buying their 'We're keeping the wires to honor the original films' line. If you went to Toho in the 60's and 70's and said "HEY! Want to make it so all wires are invisible?" they'd be totally on board with that.

^Most likely. Part of it could be laziness, another part is they simply don't want to alter what is clearly there.

When Speilberg was asked if he was going to touch up Jaws to hide some mechanical flaw with the shark for Bluray he said no. Because the movie was made for a specific time period and it holds up on its own it's going to bring that era of film with it. The same goes for Godzilla. They may have not wanted you to see the wires, but they're there as quality gets better and better over the years.
