With most of our members having seen Godzilla in theaters, I'm curious to know what everyone thought of the MUTO monsters. Did you think they were a good fit for Godzilla's comeback? Let me know your opinions below.

Personally, I really quite enjoyed them. I like how Gareth Edwards gave them personality and made them seem natural. I also quite liked their design - something very unique yet I could notice inspirations from past Toho Kaiju as well as other movie monsters which inspire Edwards' filming career.

They were an interesting foe, none the less. But through the whole film, I knew neither of them could defeat Godzilla. They were not as big or as bad as he was, so they could never win. That doesn't mean I did not like them, but there not like Gigan or anything. Gigan, per say, is as big as Godzilla and stands a chance against Godzilla on his own. The Mutos did not. Just my thought.

I really liked them. I thought the design was great and their powers were cool. Overall a great for for Godzilla.

CHRIS PICARD - I felt that the MUTOs were a fantastic creation! Everything about them was both alien and recognizable  - somewhat like a familiar stranger. I could certainly see the inspirations taken from other creatures and Kaiju from the past. That being said, I could also see a great deal of originality in the designs of both MUTO. Their grace and personality made them excellent foes for Godzilla. Naturally, I absolutely adored the nuzzling scene when the female "kissed" the male as he presented a nuclear warhead to her - that was so very darling! Additionally, I was quite moved by the instance in which the momma MUTO lost her babies - a necessary act of destruction, but dreadful all the same. Regardless, I believe the MUTOs should certainly be counted among some of the most fascinating and destructive of Godzilla's enemies. I hope to see new iterations of them in the future! :)

I really liked them! They seemed like a cross breed between Kamacuras and Gigan! I liked the subplot of the 2 wreaking havoc across the world just to find each other, it humanized the creatures and made me sympathetic for them. Their fighting was unique and I thought their EMP attack was interesting.

On a side note, how cool would it be if they somehow introduced aliens that capture the carcass of the MUTOs and BOOM! That's how Gigan is created. I'd probably pass out if that happened.

Not much immagination.  They copied off the Cloverfield monster.  The offspring thing copied off Godzilla 98.  Why they were housing the female in Japan didn't make much sense to me (plus, how can you have a project that big, for that long, with thousands of people involved, and not have it leaked to the press).

I think they would have been better off dumping the MUTO thing.  Godzilla was one of the few movies coming out that had a chance for $1 billion dollars.  But too much MUTOs caused them to make only half that amount.

I'm curious to see what kind of plot they come up with for the sequel.  Another Godzilla vs monster movie  will be redundant and will probably fail.

A very well done opponent. I love the Mutos. They are monsters not to be taken lightly.

The MUTOS weren't bad, but like pretty much every element of this film(in my opinion,) they weren't great either. To me, they were a cross between the monster in Cloverfield an a Gyaos, which are two decent kaiju designs, but nothing stellar. Now I know it's very hard to be original, but they could have done better. The conceptual threat of the MUTOS was good, but the visual representation of that threat was not scary. In fact, I think they were somewhat awkward looking, much like Cloverfield. Not much tetxture, and not much personally and expressiveness in the face.

And then they practically friggin' cuddled right before they are killed. I mean, did we really need that? Yes, it adds more heart to the characters, but unfortunately, we are supposed to be rooting for Godzilla to destroy them, not feel bad for them when Godzilla wins. I may be simple, but I want my villians bad, not family orientated. Why we had two American Godzilla movies which in the climax are s-load of babies babies being blown up is beyond me.  I don't know, maybe I look at this sort of thing a certain way because I'm a parent, but the whole ending left me feeling hollow.

So MUTOS are nothing more than okay. They get you through the film I suppose. But I hope for G2, they give you a villian who is scary, and who you can love to hate. Like Gigan, Hedorah, Destroyah, Megalon, Orga,or King Ghidorah. Not that we need THOSE characters, but they hit the antagonist mark in such a more satifying way.

I had no problem with the Muto's themselves. Its the film that I had an issue with in a very big way.

The Muto's though were designed well, their EMP was a very good addition.

I thought there should have been more of them that Godzilla should have swatted like flies, but, that wasn't the case.

They dominated most of the destruction and truth be told, they had more quality screen time than Godzilla.

Just to add one thing. I never understood (according to the mythos in this movie)

I don't get how the Godzilla species survived against the Muto species. 2 Mutos were pretty well mandhandling Godzilla and he needed Ford's help to gain the upper hand, and even when he gained the upper hand it was via one of the Mutos being distracted by Ford. Then Godzilla only could win by jumping the Muto from "behind" when it wasn't looking.

When pregnant they seem to have lots of offspring, so I assume they had higher numbers that the Godzilla species.

2 against 1 and Godzilla won't last long. With the amount of offspring, I am not sure how the Godzilla species could have really survived against creatures that also seem not to tire as Godzilla at times seemed very tired either that or very old. The Mutos seemed like they could have just kept on going.

So in the world long ago, it should have been the Mutos that ruled with the Godzilla species more on the run from the sheer numbers.

I loved them Chris, what I instantly thought when both MUTOs got back together was, honey we made it, it doesn't matter if we die, we are back together and we are gonna have children. That really made me start to tear up during the movie. They look so awesome, the way they fought was so deadly, they both showed no mercy. I loved the seen when Godzilla was on the ground cuz he had the $#it beaten out of him, and the mutos started to stab him with thier claws, then came a part where Hokmuto flew in the air and flew back down extremely fast and pounded godzilla. Over all I love um and I hope there is another one in the new film and is bigger and stronger, more evolved.

Talisman, you need a little class of Biology here:

In the movie, the two mutos do manage to almost defeat Godzilla, that is true, but if you are going to talk about species, then you most take in count that while we know how the mutos species look, based in two specimens, we only know ONE specimen of Godzilla, and while he was acknowledge as an “Alfa predator” by Dr Serizawa, in fact, there is no evidence to say that THIS particular Godzilla specimen was, in fact, the largest or the strongest of the species (to be sincere, we don’t even know its sex or age).

Other thing is that despite how old was this Godzilla, we don’t know if he had ever had a fight, fighting skills are important, and although the mutos had not had a fight either, they were two and that was a good advantage.

The large number of eggs is irrelevant here. We don’t know the ecosystem of that prehistoric time. Check the turtles and insects, for example, they lay dozens of eggs in one moment, and about hundreds in large groups, but from all of them, only very few survived. There could be smaller predators that feed on the baby mutos, if not, why the adults were so protective? They definitely had parental skills for something, don’t you think?

Other point, how do you know that the Godzilla species don’t live and hunted in groups too? We don’t have evidence to say that Godzilla was a lone hunter, but even then, these three specimens (Godzilla and the two mutos) could be just exceptions to the rule. What he have saw in the movie, is just a single picture of a large mosaic, biologically speaking, you CAN’T generalize that ALL the fights between these species where the same. Check the hyenas and the lions, most people think that lions simply destroy the hyenas, but that is not the case, as sometimes, the hyenas defeat and even kill lions! Nature is not plain and bi-dimensional.

Finally, about the strength issue, Godzilla was just there to make his work, while the mutos were protecting they offspring. Do you know any more dangerous than a mother-father protecting they offspring? In fact, check that in Hawaii, the male muto simple got away and don’t fight too much against Godzilla. So, this part is psychological.

The world of Godzilla was not a “two animals” place. There were probably hundreds if not thousands of species, and although Godzilla was the top of the food change, you most know that in nature, there is no animal that is 100% the “king”. The same Serizawa say it: nature has a balance, she knows the way.
