Discussing the 'Dark Tone' Of This Film

This movie is supposed to have a dark tone. What exactly does that mean?
Now I'm not asking what it means LITTERALLY. I already know. What I mean is, what does it mean for THIS movie? I understand there's going to be death in it, and it's going to be frightening and realistic. But lately, I wonder how far it's going to go.
The reason I'm asking is because I want to love this movie. I've been pretty certain that it will be my favorite Godzilla film. I'm asking because it looks epic, it looks creepy, and it looks.... AWESOME. But there are things that I've really been thinking about that I haven't thought about before.
This all started because of some things I read.
I've been reading over the forums and everything even though I've been sick, and I noticed that people have been mentioning that this movie isn't really for kids. A lot. Now I knew that, but I continue to see people say things like, "I'm gonna take my kids to see it in theaters," and I keep seeing answers like, "This movie might be too violent or scary or too dark for children." Not those exact words, but answers quite related to them. And stuff like the fact that there's a scene with dead bodies floating in a river or whatever.
So here it is: it's bothering me. I have young siblings who want to see this movie. I love Godzilla. I do want a realistic, creepy Godzilla film. But at the same time, I don't want a brutal, gory film that highlights death and has people die just to have that kind of thing in it, even if it is toned down and is given a PG-13 rating. Even if the movie doesn't directly show gore scenes, I don't want gruesome, violent and brutal deaths to be a main focus of this film. I'm not sensitive, I could totally handle it, but my brothers and sisters...... different story. When my brother found out about the bodies-in-the-water scene, he automatically started to question whether or not he wanted to watch it. (He's eight, so cut him some slack).
I understand a lot of you want it to be violent, or have a lot of death, and that's fine if that's what you want. If that's how the movie turns out, then I'm glad everything will work out for you guys. But that's not what I wanted. That's not what I want my young brothers and sisters to witness when I take them to a film that I've been getting them into. It's going to let me and them down. I can't get into a movie that turns out like that.
I just don't want that to happen.
So please guys, just tell me what it means. Tell me what you think this movie means when it says it has a 'dark tone'. Maybe I won't like the truth, but I want to know. And a lot of you guys will probably think I'm sensitive or whatever, but I can deal with it if you give me answers.
