Discussing the 'Dark Tone' Of This Film

Hello everyone! Just got sick, that's why I haven't been online very much, but I've been getting over it. That said, I have to ask a question that's bugging me lately. I'm not sure how everyone will react to this, but I'm willing to find out.

This movie is supposed to have a dark tone. What exactly does that mean?

Now I'm not asking what it means LITTERALLY. I already know. What I mean is, what does it mean for THIS movie? I understand there's going to be death in it, and it's going to be frightening and realistic. But lately, I wonder how far it's going to go.

The reason I'm asking is because I want to love this movie. I've been pretty certain that it will be my favorite Godzilla film. I'm asking because it looks epic, it looks creepy, and it looks.... AWESOME. But there are things that I've really been thinking about that I haven't thought about before.

This all started because of some things I read.

I've been reading over the forums and everything even though I've been sick, and I noticed that people have been mentioning that this movie isn't really for kids. A lot. Now I knew that, but I continue to see people say things like, "I'm gonna take my kids to see it in theaters," and I keep seeing answers like, "This movie might be too violent or scary or too dark for children." Not those exact words, but answers quite related to them. And stuff like the fact that there's a scene with dead bodies floating in a river or whatever.

So here it is: it's bothering me. I have young siblings who want to see this movie. I love Godzilla. I do want a realistic, creepy Godzilla film. But at the same time, I don't want a brutal, gory film that highlights death and has people die just to have that kind of thing in it, even if it is toned down and is given a PG-13 rating. Even if the movie doesn't directly show gore scenes, I don't want gruesome, violent and brutal deaths to be a main focus of this film. I'm not sensitive, I could totally handle it, but my brothers and sisters...... different story. When my brother found out about the bodies-in-the-water scene, he automatically started to question whether or not he wanted to watch it. (He's eight, so cut him some slack).

I understand a lot of you want it to be violent, or have a lot of death, and that's fine if that's what you want. If that's how the movie turns out, then I'm glad everything will work out for you guys. But that's not what I wanted. That's not what I want my young brothers and sisters to witness when I take them to a film that I've been getting them into. It's going to let me and them down. I can't get into a movie that turns out like that.

I just don't want that to happen.

So please guys, just tell me what it means. Tell me what you think this movie means when it says it has a 'dark tone'. Maybe I won't like the truth, but I want to know. And a lot of you guys will probably think I'm sensitive or whatever, but I can deal with it if you give me answers.

There will be death, but I highly doubt it will be a main focus of the film. When they say it's going to go back to it's roots I think the original. It showed wounded, it showed death, but that wasn't the focus. If your siblings can handle the original without cringing I don't think this one will be much of a problem for them.

DINOZILLA0439 - Your concerns are not without weight. It's extremely sweet of you to want to take your siblings for an outting to see this film. I've a great desire to take my nephews. That being said, Godzilla (2014) has been, as far as I'm concerned, varified to feature intense sequences of action, destruction, peril, and sci-fi violence. I've read an article stating that there's an instance in which the bodies of multiple drowned men and women are seen washing by a window in the wash of a tidal wave generated solely by Godzilla making landfall - bringing to mind images of the various tsunami footage we've all seen in recent years. As a whole I'm certain this film will feature images that some viewers will find disturbing. I'm the type of girl who prefers a more realistic touch. However, I've no way of divining what will feature in Edwards' upcoming movie. How about a little advice? Perhaps you could have a go at the film prior to taking your brothers and/or sisters to see it? That way, you'll be able to see for yourself if the filme is too violent for them. I certainly hope this helps, sweetheart, and I definately want you to feel comfortable taking your siblings to see this movie - I simply wanted to be up front with you about what I suspect Godzilla (2014) will feature. :)

@Durp004

Yeah, they could definitely handle the original. If that's how it turns out, I'm completely okay with that. Thanks for reassuring me, as well as not judging me for my opinion. Appreciate your time. :)

And @Something Real

Aw, thanks! I appreciate your advice as well. And it's alright, you simply gave me what you think is the truth and that's what I wanted.

Also, I had heard about that water scene (as I mentioned it in the post), but I didn't really know the details so thanks for telling me.

And lastly, I love your idea and I wish I could do that.... but I can't. You see, my parents (I'm pretty much sixteen) are planning it as a special trip for my birthday, which is on May 26, by the way. We only have enough money to go one time, especially if we see it in IMAX 3D, and they're taking everyone, as far as I know. So I can't, for lack of money, and because it's going to be a group and one-time thing. I was the one who asked to go (you probably guessed that. But I haven't been to a theater in like, thirteen years), and I sorta got all my siblings into it. Not on purpose, but still. (Well, not entirely, haha). So that's why they want to go, and they pretty much expect it now.

But anyway, I totally appreciate your advice anyway. Thanks for not judging me for being sensitive and all. You're a really nice fan. :) I suppose I will just have to hope for the best.

You're quite welcome, DINOZILLA0439. Happy early birthday, sweetheart. Sweet 16! You'll have a blast! Regardless of the films tone, I hope you have a fantastic time with your family. That's the most important part. Always enjoy the moments you get to spend with them - they're worth their weight in gold! :)

@Something Real

Thanks again! XD

And right you are. I'm pretty sure that that will be the best part of it. As much as I love Godzilla and am so excited about seeing him on the big screen, being there with everyone is just going to make it so much better. :)

And once again, thanks for everything. You're very nice. :)
