MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-09-2014 1:26 AMWhat if Godzilla won? What if the emotion that gets us at the end of a Godzilla film isn't the triumph of human survival, but instead the complete loss of hope? What if Godzilla (2014) had a "bad" ending?
This is a question I've been asking myself ever since I heard of the darker tone this movie's taking. What if instead of our main characters and their loved ones looking into the sunrise at a better future, it's Godzilla stomping on our most beloved, main character and then looking into the camera at the audience with a sneer; as if to tell us, "This is what you are to me, insects." as if to let us know that nature will never be beaten by us. Or maybe a character falling onto his knees at the site of all that he loves gone, including a future with only Godzilla in sight. Whatever ending it is, it'll have the audience feeling conflincted, not if the movie was bad or not but, what if the movie's final lesson is right? What if Godzilla (2014) makes US the true monster?
Deep stuff I know, but it gets you thinking and that's the perfect ending. We shouldn't get an ending where humanity beats Godzilla, we shouldn't even get an ending where Godzilla walks into the ocean with some of the main characters still alive; it should be cruel and cold-blooded just like how the humans in this film will see Godzilla himself, at least in my opinion. Overall, I feel this ending should hit us where it hurts so to make the whole film's tone and message stay with us and give us a true 21st century Godzilla film that the character deserves. Regardless, I just want an ending like that and what better way to complete it than with Godzilla's mighty roar as the screen fades to black and the credits roll.
Any thoughts on what you'd like in the ending guys?

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-09-2014 2:27 AMYeah I don't like Cloverfield's ending much, but they were on the right track. I just didn't give a crap about the characters that much to care, I think if Godzilla made good characters it'd be much better than Cloverfield. But then again, I don't like Cloverfield that much overall.

GODZILLA HIMSELF
MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-09-2014 3:09 AMyes, it should have an ending where mankind loses, makes sence when you consider the tone of film. besides, its not cliche like, oh i don't know, almost every superhero movie ever!

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-09-2014 8:04 AMI literally made this same post a month back. I think the ending should be the last clip from the trailer except when the secondary echoy roar starts, instead of the Godzilla logo, it's just a black screen until the roar fades out and then "Directed by Gareth Edwards" with no music for the first 5-10 seconds.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-09-2014 8:46 AMlet me start off by saying that I would love a dark hopeless ending to this movie. However, I have a feeling it wont happen. It's just too hard to please the general audience with an unhappy ending, and that is where the bulk of the money is going to come from. So, while it would be sweet, I don't know if a studio is going to shell out 150 million dollars on a movie and have a sad ending. That's why most movies with a dark/nihilistic tone tend to be small budget or independant.

We cant win, nor can Godzilla.
Godzilla is a lesson displayed as a monstrous catastrophe, but you cant teach a lesson to a dead person. Its about learning. If our main characters die, that would mean there is no hope, and without hope we might as well all just vanish.
At the end of every catastrophe, there is the light of hope and familly. Thats the important thing. Yes, many people will lose each other, but the important isnt what you lost, its what you still have.
No one who have been through such a tragedy will be so careless again. And thats coming from someone who lost a father during a house fire. And while a house fire is no where as bad, all castrophes are just a bigger and widespread version of it.
But is it fair to Godzilla? Absolutely not. Godzilla is a victim yes, but he is a victim without a happy ending. He will NEVER have a happy ending, and thats the point. Doomed to forever be angry and destruction, a pawn of nature.
And that why him returning to the ocean is wonderfull. Its a lesson learned, but he would return to teach us it again if necessary. Its not only about the characters learning, but about the audience learning.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-09-2014 10:43 AMI would like an open ending. A bad ending would be okay, too, I hope there will be no happe end.
By the way, the fanart with the light effects is really, really good and creepy. Never saw this before.

MemberMothra LarvaeFeb-09-2014 1:43 PMI almost agree, but I feel all the main character's family should not make it instead, and the main character is the only one that lives. There needs to be a litle bit of hope, but that in itself is a dark tragic ending anyway. Kinda like how godzilla 2000 ended, godzilla just fucked shit up in the end.
That godzilla debris scene though, if it were an ending shot then your whole idea would pretty much work. Queue scene before that shot, it's all the main character's deaths at the hands of Godzilla, next shot is Godzilla destroying the rest of San Fran, then queue the debris scene (maybe oppenheimers quote? but not too sure it will fit film ise, it fit perfect trailer wise though) and end with black. It's a dark ending yet opened, but still it could work as a single film that way too, so best of both worlds
but again, id prefer where the main character is the only one left, but i liked your explanation OP
