MemberMothra LarvaeOct-20-2013 12:17 AMI personally don't really care for the idea. I think it really contradicts a few themes that are being aimed for in the 2014 film. I think a DAM like movie would sort of push aside those themes in favor of something a bit contradicting of those themes. I'm not saying that it would be a bad movie, I'm just saying that I don't care for the idea.
But enough of my usually unpopular opinions (not just within Godzilla, everything else in life as well), what do you, fellow Godzilla fanpeople, think about the possible Destroy All Monster like movie?

AdminGodzillaOct-20-2013 1:24 AMI think it's too early for a Destroy All Monsters-esque movie. I'd rather Godzilla take on new variations of old opponents (Rodan, King Ghidorah...) and the characters in the first movie have their lives altered further by Godzilla's existence.
One of the most interesting aspects of daikaiju films, to me, aren't the fights, or the designs, or the monsters, but how these monsters and their battles directly, or indirectly, affect the human cast onscreen. It's what made the original Godzilla so wonderful and movies like Monster Zero so fun. If Edwards hits the right beats with that, then I'd like to see how deeply the aftermath of the new movie affects lives in future sequels. Another DAM/Final Wars doesn't interest me right now.

MemberMothra LarvaeOct-20-2013 2:42 AMI agree. If they have to make a DAM movie, then I'd hope they slowly move the tone of the movie in that direction, instead of having what we're expecting from Godzilla 2014, and then all of a sudden, Kaiju are on an island, and Godzilla's taking care of his offspring and shit.

AdminGodzillaOct-20-2013 3:53 AMTo be fair, Edwards said he, "liked" the idea, but that doesn't necessarily entail a perfect blueprint for what DAM was. If he were to do something like that I'm sure a little more thought would be put into it.

MemberTitanosaurusOct-20-2013 5:34 AMWell, maybe "Destroy All Monsters" right after this movie is a bit soon. It's not a guarantee that it'll happen though,so there's room to introduce at least a few more movies that gradually allow such a movie to be made in terms of tone, monsters, and interactions & reactions with the human characters. Maybe it's not impossible to have a slightly more serious take on monster vs. monster brawls, but we'll just have to wait and see. Regardless,us G-fans must unite and support this movie all the way!

MemberBaragonOct-20-2013 6:00 AMDepending on the tone they use I could see a DAM type movie but it's have to be a third movie. The only reason DAM and final wars, to a lesser extent, worked was because the monsters were all known and fans wanted to see them together. To throw a bunch of new monsters who aren't established or known wouldn't have the same effect.
I am happy it's being thought of though as that means the type of tone I'm hoping the movie will go for would have to be met to follow it up with this type of movie.

MemberMothra LarvaeOct-20-2013 9:53 AMNow remember, edwards said he liked the monster island aspect of destroy all monsters, keep that in mind. But anyways, a DAM style sequel would be great. I cant see why it would be a bad idea. It would give a bigger threat to us and Godzilla instead of just repeating a new monster who just appears out of nowhere. As long as everything else, characters, stories, are also taken to a new level which shouldnt be a problem for Gareth.

MemberMothra LarvaeOct-20-2013 9:55 AMI think it would be a smart idea to hav a Destroy All Monters remake,But I think it will be better if they do spin off's.Because if the next godzilla movie is DAM it wont be as good .If Gareth Edwards does good Toho might give him other rights to other monsters: Mothra,Rodan, ect. It would then be amazing.Mabye at the end of every spin off they can show a scene after the credits on how they capture these terrifiyning beasts and put them on Monster Island....The End?

MemberMothra LarvaeOct-20-2013 1:17 PMI could have sworn that there was a topic description on this thing that said "Director Gareth Edwards had implied that he'd be interested in making Monster Island movie, like DAM. I never meant to make it seem as if the possible Godzilla sequel will without a doubt be like DAM, no. Not at all. It was just an sort of hinted idea Gareth had probably been playing around with in his head.

AdminGodzillaOct-20-2013 2:03 PMYou're right. He implied the possibility at Comic Con, but never said it would be a sure-fire thing he'd do.

MemberMothra LarvaeOct-20-2013 2:08 PMFirst I want to see how the new Godzilla turns out to be. Then I think they shouldn't remake Destroy All Monsters. It's classic and should stay classic. I would like it more if TOHO would make some new Godzilla movies in the future.

BCrockett94
MemberMothra LarvaeOct-20-2013 2:16 PMRight? Everyone needs to take some of Gareth's implied statements with a grain or two of salt. He really just said that it might be a possibility, something he'd maybe consider doing.
I agree, Kiryu26snake. However, Toho already, in a sense, recreated Destroy All Monsters with Final Wars. Toho itself will probably make a Godzilla movie a few years after we Americans are done with the franchise, which may be just a one movie sort of thing, or a maybe we make a trilogy. Who knows? Either way, Toho will probably go on making more sooner or later.

MemberMothra LarvaeOct-20-2013 3:01 PMI feel that Gareth should introduce some of the old monsters like King Ghidorah or Mothra. It would be too soon for a DAM sequel with all of the monsters we know because non-Godzilla fans who see the movie won't know who the monsters are right away. This is just my opinion.

BCrockett94
MemberMothra LarvaeOct-20-2013 5:23 PMIt doesn't even have to include Toho monsters. It could be one of those "in the distant future" movies, and have a bunch of unknown creatures and monsters all over the place.
I'm just not one of the people that could appreciate Destroy All Monsters in a modern retelling.

MemberMothra LarvaeOct-30-2013 4:45 PMIt was never a Destroy All Monsters sequel!
Why do people always misinterpret this?!
Gareth Edwards said he wanted to explore the concept of Monster Island, not remake Destroy All Monsters. There is a difference!
Paying attention to detail is a wonderful skill, and a mind is a terrible thing to waste.
DAM is Edwards' favorite Godzilla movie aside from the original, but he never at any time said he wanted to do a sequel based on that film. He wants to explore the concept of Monster Island.
Don't start a thread based on misinterpreted information please. It's a waste of time for everyone.

MemberMothra LarvaeOct-30-2013 5:51 PMYo, Kyero, this thread is rather old. lmao it's been stated that I was misinterpreting this somewhere in the discussion. I've already made a recent post, "How Gareth Edwards can use the Monster Island idea and still get a serious film". It had nothing to do with Destroy All Monsters, other than mention it was a film that had used this concept.
