Skull Island is Not a Sequel to Kong '05, Beginning of Kaiju Trilogy

Gormoru Island has been keeping a sharp eye on Godzilla Resurgence, but they've also been following Legendary's Skull Island with a great deal of detail. The latest detail isn't particularly new or surprising, but it does alleviate some confusion amongst some fans.

Saigon Giai Phong reports that the movie's Unit Publicist, Gregg Brilliant, (how can we not trust a name like that?) has confirmed Skull Island is definitely not a sequel to Peter Jackson's 2005 film. It is also not a remake or retelling of the original Kong story in any way, shape or form. It's a brand new Kong story that is being touted as the first of a “kaiju trilogy.”

This trilogy includes, Skull Island, Godzilla 2 and Godzilla vs. Kong. (Think of it as Legendary's “Wave 2” of giant monster movies. Wave 1 being Godzilla '14 and the unrelated Pacific Rim.)

The confirmation that Skull Island has nothing to do with Jackson's Kong isn't surprising. Legendary Pictures head honcho, Thomas Tull, seems to have little interest in linking the new Kong with Jackson's. Additonally, a fresh start gives Legendary the freedom to envision Kong the way they want to. (Like upscaling his size to fight Godzilla.)

Skull Island is expected to set up the Godzilla sequel in some capacity and of course both will cross in the finale. Does that mean there will be more Godzilla and Kong films after they meet in 2020? It most likely depends on how successful these movies are. Until then we can look forward to Skull Island being the first step in Legendary's expansion of their kaiju universe.

Thanks for posting this up GMan, Not sure how people could still think the two films were connected. But this will certainly update everyone passing by. Interesting to note that Skull Island will lead into Godzilla 2. Will we learn about other Monsters on Skull Island? This does take place well before the events of Godzilla (2014), so I doubt they can "awaken" anything like Rodan or Mothra. My guess is we see sublte hints to their existence but that's about it. Either way, I'm very stoked to see where this goes!

The real piece of info in this post was the reference to this being a trilogy basically saying it will heavily connect to G2 and the eventual King Kong Vs Godzilla. Really interested to see where they take Kong for this movie. He can't do the same song and dance as the last 2 remakes, and due to the upcoming Godzilla brawl taking out some t rexes won't really do it either. I'm wondering if Kong will actually encounter other kaiju in this movie as a way to build him up, especially with the monster star power Godzilla 2 is bringing to the table. Granted Mothra, Ghidorah and Rodan together probably still don't hold a candle to Kong in the west at least in terms of popularity and marquee value.

this is a great three shot of Varan, Baragon, and Angilas. Create a similar scene as one of the easter eggs in the Skull Island movie. since the Godzilla and Kong universes will be shared, and a lead up to the Godzilla and Kong showdown.
