The Japanese Academy Awards have just wrapped up with Godzilla Minus One dominating this year's show. Minus One was nominated for 12 Japanese Academy Awards and walked away with 8, including Best Picture of the Year!
This marks the second Godzilla film in the history of the awards, since 1978, that has won the coveted Best Picture Award! The first Godzilla movie to take the Best Picture win was Shin Godzilla.
Director Takashi Yamazaki lost the Best Director Award to Wim Wenders of Perfect Days--The Japanese Academy's first foreign director to win the honor. Yamazaki has previously won the Best Director Award for Always: Sunset on Third Street in 2006 and Eternal Zero in 2014. He did however win the Best Screenplay honor for Minus One.
The following is Godzilla Minus One's complete list of wins at the Japanese Academy Awards:
- Best Picture - Minami Ichikawa, Shuji Abe, Takashi Yamazaki
- Best Screenplay - Takashi Yamazaki
- Best Supporting Actress - Sakura Ando
- Best Cinematography - Kozo Shibasaki
- Best Lighting - Nariyuki Ueda
- Best Art Direction - Anri Jojo
- Best Sound - Hisafumi Takeuchi
- Best Editing - Ryuji Miyajima
It was also nominated in the following categories:
- Best Director - Takashi Yamazaki
- Best Actor - Ryonosuke Kamiki
- Best Actress - Minami Hamabe
- Best Music - Naoki Sato
