So far Polygon's Godzilla anime trilogy has been a divisive experience for fans. Although the upcoming Godzilla: The Planet Eater is enjoying some good early buzz, the former film, City on the Edge of Battle, came under fire for failing to deliver MechaGodzilla as advertised. The movie had some great ideas comparing religion with technological assimilation, but the characters and story development left much to be desired.
However, co-directors Hiroyuki Seshita and Kobun Shizuno stick to their guns, enjoying the criticism. They confirm the divisiveness was intentional. “We welcome getting bashed by the traditionalists,” said Seshita, an avid Godzilla fan. “That proves more than anything we succeeded in creating something different.”
“I’m not a Godzilla expert," Shizuno added. "And so I simply made a film I thought would be enjoyable.”

Godzilla: The Planet Eater will continue the exploration of faith and religion in the face of the apocalypse, but it's also considered a more action packed entry in the trilogy. The movie opens in Japan on November 3rd, 2018 -- Godzilla's 64th Anniversary.
The film stars the voice talents of Mamoru Miyano (Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Ultraman Zero: The Movie), Takahiro Sakurai (Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans), Kana Hanazawa (.hack//Quantum), Yuki Kaji (Attack on Titan), Tomokazu Sugita (Attack on Titan), Junichi Suwabe (Space Dandy), Kenta Miyake (Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn), Kenyu Horiuchi (Bleach, One Piece), Kazuhiro Yamaji (Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children), Kazuya Nakai (Dragon Ball Super) and Ari Ozawa (Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun). The film is directed by Kobun Shizuno (Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare) & Hiroyuki Seshita (Knights of Sidonia) from a screenplay by Gen Urobuchi (Kamen Rider Gaim).
The film's prequels, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters and
Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle are currently streaming on Netflix worldwide.
