Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures will be releasing a sequel to the monstrous hit, Godzilla (2014) in roughly 3 years, releasing June 8th, 2018. Though unrelated, this will be the second Godzilla film to grace the big screen over the next 3 years, with TOHO's own Godzilla film stomping into cinemas next summer!
Given that we're about 3 years away from the King's mighty return to Hollywood, any news, especially artwork for the film is unlikely to breaking any headlines. However, it's not unheard of that early concept art has leaked years before a film has entered production. This artwork below was leaked in 2012, before anyone knew it was related to the 2014 Godzilla film and it was only later taken down after we and a number of outlets discovered it and shared it across the net - forcing Warner Brothers' hands, to preserve the surprise for audiences at that year's Comic-Con screening.
But, without confirmation from a studio or a takedown request, there's no way to validate any artwork we're sent or shown from now, until 2018 when the film releases. So when concept art "leaks" we urge our readers to always take the content with a grain of salt.
With that said, one of our members in the Godzilla forums did share a photo with us, insinuating that it was a pair of early concept sketches for the upcoming Godzilla 2014 sequel. The photo shows sketches of both (what looks to obviously be) Rodan and Mothra, both iconic TOHO Monsters which have been confirmed by Legendary to appear alongside Godzilla and Ghidorah in the 2018 follow-up. The author of this post claims to have a friend close to both Warner Brothers and Disney who sent him the picture and adds that he has received early concept work for other projects by those studios in the past by the same friend.
Unfortunately, as mentioned above, there is no way for us to authenticate this member's word or the artwork they provided. But for argument's sake, you can check out the picture below:
Do you think it's early concept work? Or simply fan art? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section or in the ongoing discussion in our Godzilla sequel forum topic! Thanks to Krif33 for the image.
