also that just feels appropriate
what inconsistencies? I get the other complaints about the story, but inconsistent?
Personally I felt that Singular Point's constant focus on physics got really confusing and hard to follow after a while. Inserting real life science into a Kaiju story can be interesting, but I feel like the series put too much emphasis on it. As someone who has a lot of trouble with subjects like math and physics, it got to the point where it took me out of the story and it ended up feeling like I was watching an overly long college physics lecture, rather than an entertaining Kaiju show. There's also a couple of inconsistencies with the story and characters, as well as moments where it felt like the show kept contradicting itself and not explaining certain things that it should've, which kind of bugged me.
The reason that Ford joins up with the military was due to the fact that Godzilla, the Male MUTO and the military were heading toward San Francisco, where his family was. So, in his mind, joining up with the military would be the fastest way for him to get back to his family. He also wanted to help in the fight against the MUTO so that he could not only protect he family he had left (as that MUTO already killed both of his parents), but to also to help prevent other families from being torn apart by them as well, which is why he was so focused on reuniting the kid he saved on the monorail with his parents and was relived when the kid found his parents.
No i get it. I just dont get the SP complaints.. but yeah, Noodle Ghidorah is basically 98 ghidorah.
I honestly thought Ford was realisticly acted. Maybe a little bit more emotion could have been helpful. The only moments I think were weird is him joining the military against the mutos after Honolulu. But other than that really eveuthing that happens makes sense. He also is not the most proactive protagonist in MV
I think some of the issues with some of characters, like Ford, was due to some of the performances, rather than the writing. The Novelization for 2014 gives a lot more insight on Ford's character and motivation, which weren't as prominent in the movie due to Aaron Taylor-Johnson's more held back performance.
I would argue that Joe Brody is a pretty underappreciated character.
Sorry lol,
It's cool if you like them, I personally didn't, but I wouldn't try to take away someone else's enjoyment of them.
Yeah, the human characters bore me. Except for Ishiro, he is the man.
Eiga gave it a 3.6/5 stars.
Yeah this is why I dont get the complaints about G 14' maybe because the characters bore some people is why people dislike how long godzilla takes.
Godzilla 2014 is the first legendary godzilla movie.
Yeah, The Planet Eater was pretty much the only Godzilla movie that genuinely mad while watching it (Singular Point came close though), which considering that there's currently 36 Godzilla films (not counting the TV series) and I enjoy most of them, that says a lot.
Godzilla Fan,
Mostly Japanese box office outlets and sources that can translate it.
Godzilla in Gojira (1954): about 8 minutes
Bruce from Jaws: about 4 minutes
The Blob from The Blob (1958): about 1 and a half minutes
Lawrence Talbot in Werewolf form from The Wolf Man (1941): roughly 4 minutes
Clover from Cloverfield: 2 and a half minutes
Parasites from Cloverfield: 1 minute and 20 seconds
Zilla from Godzilla (1998): roughly 12 and a half minutes
Baby Zillas from Godzilla (1998): roughly 5 minutes
Godzilla from Godzilla (2014): 11 minutes.
vs
Yautja from Predator (1987): 8 minutes
Xenomorph in all of its forms from ALIEN (1979): 4 Minutes.
I only know Legendary Godzilla.
Haha, I agree. I think Plant eater is worse than 1998
"Top" lists of the last 10 years have been added.
Didnt Godzilla Technically show up in the first seconds of G14' then?
the montage?
my favorite of my 3 godzilla figures (yes really) is my bandai movie monster series biollante.

my favorite figure in my entire collection is probably my hammond collection baryonyx, wich I aquired just yesterday!

Technically, Godzilla showed up in the first few seconds.
Darth Vader shows up in the first 5 minutes.
This is really great, I cant wait to see it!
What about darth vader? Or Alien?
Plus Godzilla only gets around the same amount of screen time of screen time consistently across the MV films.
I dont get this complaint bc even in the original it still takes a while for Goji to show up and when he does he doesnt stay, and we get short scenes with goji.
Plus Goji gets less screen time in the OG than 2014!!!
It is very rare that Godzilla gets over 20 minutes in any of his movies released so far. Most lf the movies range from 9-15 minutes of gojis total screentime.
Plus 2014 had the added benefit of having other monsters.
UPDATE 05/16/2022:
Kogyotsushin, via World of KJ, confirms Shin Ultraman's numbers from the original post are accurate! The movie has opened with a staggering $7.7 Million three day opening. ($5.5 Million Sat/Sun opening weekend.) It currently sits at an attendance of 641,802 and should hit 1 million next weekend.
Shin Ultraman is Japan's biggest May opening in 11 years. It has beaten out The Superior 8 Ultra Brothers as the top grossing/attended Ultraman film of all time. And it is the 3rd biggest opening for a kaiju/giant monster film in the last 10 years behind Shin Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Additionally, Shin Ultraman is the 5th biggest opening of the year and at its opening sits as the 17th highest grossing 2022 film in Japan.
Box office pundits and specialists think it might hit the $40 Million mark, which would make it the biggest May release in 10 years. We'll see how the movie holds next weekend.
Also, trying to repeat the success of the MCU already brought back horrendous results when it comes to stuff like the DCEU, Sony's Spider-Verse, and The Dark Universe.
We need to get back to serious on the MonsterVerse. And the sillier tone is wasting frankly spectacular actors and actresses who are somehow brought in (like Millie Bobby Brown, Ken Watanabe, etc.)
Hands down my least favorite. Can't call it Godzilla when the title character shows up A FULL HOUR INTO THE MOVIE.
2014's tone worked for setting up the series, but I feel that there's only so much they could do with the realistic/grounded tone in a series like this. I feel like they would've needed to bring in the the more out there sci-fi/fantasy tone eventually, especially when you bring in characters like Mothra, Ghidorah, and Mechagodzilla. I do hope that the upcoming Apple TV series brings back a somewhat more serious like 2014 though.
@SasquaDash:
Definitely. Because of how different the tone of the MonsterVerse is right now, I also think that people shouldn’t get their hopes up about seeing Gareth Edwards come back to direct another movie. The tone he established in the first movie wouldn’t work at this point in the MonsterVerse.
But even KSI has a darker tone, granted that may be just due to more human violence and death in that move than other MV movies, but it feels like now MV is trying to replicate the MCUs tone
Yeah, for the most part the general audiences and some critics thought that Godzilla 2014 took itself "too seriously" (even though the original was extremely serious), which probably had to do with the fact that the genre isn't as respected as it should be and the fact that Pacific Rim kind of set a standard for big Hollywood Kaiju movies. The general audience responded better to the more crazy action movie tone that Kong: Skull Island had, which resulted in the rest of the MonsterVerse having that tone.
I think you have really nailed it. While I do miss the more serious tone, lightening was definitely the logical decision.
