News like this is the kind of news that halts my entire day so I can make a video.

I would copy and paste what I wrote in the description, but my comment would be a full page long.

At the end of the day, I owe Mr. Nakajima everything. He will be missed.

As long as Godzilla's name exists.. so will Haruo Nakajima's name.

May God have a special place in heaven for him.

Thank you for the memories and the inspiration.

We all will miss you.. but as long as there is a copy of Gojira in existence.. we will see you every time we watch it.

He was legendary. Known for being Godzilla, but he took on so many roles... Rodan, Mothra, Mogera, Varan, Baragon, Kong, Gaira, Gryphon, Man Bat, Gezora, Gomess, Jirass, Gabora--That's only off the top of my head.

He played Godzilla more than any actor to date and brought a great deal of versatility to the character. He was the one put at risk the most and survived the majority of the tokusatsu forefathers and crew. What an absolute powerhouse.

Didn't Kong Skull Island didn't get it's first trailer until 8 months before it's release? Since Godzilla 2 is being released in the same month as Kong Skull Island, I would expect to see the 1st trailer around July of 2018. How likely is that guess accurate?

There will probably be leaks somewhere along the way. Hopefully until then we get some more monarch timeline hints and such.

I would love to see Gigan come into play. Unfortunately I do not see it happening in the Monsterverse. Maybe again in the toho comeback movies but I highly doubt it. I love the idea of a back story though. To maybe see what Gigan looked like before he turned into a cyborg. pretty sweet.

@Evil Gigan, you got some pretty good ideas there. I'd love to see an evil Gigan team up with Mecha G and Mecha King Ghidorah, all being rebuilt/cloned by some transformers like technology from some aliens. It would make for one hell of movie special effects wise. They could do some pretty crazy stuff with Gigan especially.

Maybe. Who knows? Studios are becoming less and less interested in big reveals at Comic Con by the year, so that could potentially affect what is revealed and how it is revealed--But anything's possible I suppose.

G. H. (Gman),

Would it be likely in the Comic Con 2018 that we would get our 1st look at the new Kaiju designs (like Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra)? Or at least get a glimpse of the designs (like a brief glimpse of Ghidorah's wings or something)?

Comic Con 2018 sounds likely, but if they don't release it online I'd say fourth quarter 2018.

Probably Comic-Con 2018. We will most likely get more stuff like the Monarch timeline in the next year, but a teaser trailer will probs be at Comic-Con 2018.

I don't really see the point of it when it would be easier simply to look the trailer up on Youtube.

Exactly. Just what is the point behind this type of access? Is it to be like some sort of 'hidden' feature?

But, it's right here:http://www.godzilla-movies.com/news/official-north-american-shin-godzilla-trailer-funimation-announces-more-cities

Out in the open. Point and click.

Meanwhile, over at Twitter, Toho Kingdom says that there is a trailer for Shin Godzilla on the FUNimation release. You have to rip the disc to your hard drive to access it:

https://twitter.com/TohoKingdom/status/893961151309991936

Really? Here's an idea: why not just put the trailer for the film on the menu with the other trailers? Nothing had to be 'ripped' to get to the trailers for Attack On Titan on that release. What is the purpose of something like this? I do not get this. The feature that should have been subjected to this kind of 'Where's Waldo' treatment was the FUNimation employee meet and greet.

Has anyone here ever heard of this?

I want to see a movie about Gigan's origin.

At first, he has this design.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3597/3609469461_f5696ef5d5_o.jpg

He is found barely alive by aliens visiting a planet after being brutally attacked by other monsters on the planet. They haul him onto their ship and turn him into a cyborg to be used as a war machine in an ongoing inter-planetary war and is named Gigan. Gigan is an efficient fighter at first but gets pulversized and mutilated in battle with another cyborg monster. Gigan wins, but has suffered fatal skin damage and his spikes and wings are completely destroyed. The side that made Gigan into a cyborg won the battle, but the enemy takes Gigan's dead body back to their planet, revive, repair, and upgrade him so he looks like he did at first in Final Wars. Gigan is reprogrammed and used in another war and is defeated, but not before wiping out a third of the enemies defenses. Gigan is upgraded AGAIN, this time into the Final Wars version with chainsaws and destroys the enemy completely, acting on his own the whole time, just obeying orders. At the end, the aliens arriving in our solar system. It ends on a zooming shot of Gigan's red-glowing visor and Earth being reflected in it.

But again, I can't lay it all at Funimation's feet. As insulting as it is, getting Toho to play ball with American distributors is like training an elephant to walk a tightwire while writing an Aaron Sorkin stage play in Chinese. They have a massive grudge against American distributors it seems and unless they pony up a significant amount for those extras, we don't get them.

Agreed.

But, at least Shin Godzilla should have gotten a release on par with that of Attack On Titan. That means trailers (for the actual film) and ending credits in English. The box art on the Shin Godzilla release mentions "trailers." An unsuspecting buyer would assume, and with good reason, that this means trailers for Shin Godzilla. I know I did. So, here I was, crawling all over the menu, wondering, "Where is the trailer?' The Hong Kong release by Intercontinental Ltd., and the Australian release by Madman Entertainment both have trailers. In fact, the Madman release has both Toho and the US trailers. So, I quite naturally expected that FUNimation, who distributed Shin Godzilla in theaters in North America, would include trailers for their Blu-ray/DVD release. They did for AOT. To my amazement, no trailer. And no ending credits, although I was told in a message that there would be. So I just want to know: what happened, and what is the thinking behind this release? I sent them a message on Twitter, the contents of an earlier post here, seeking clarification. This release, as it is, is simply inexplicable.

And there's a basic principle here: a release of this stature, with this level of critical acclaim and commercial success, deserves much better than "Godzilla vs. The Nerds."

I'm absolutely with you. I'm still insulted by Sony's GMK release and wish that movie would get a grand treatment here in America. It deserved far more than the release given. I had to pick up Toho's Blu-ray for that movie as well.

But again, I can't lay it all at Funimation's feet. Sony's one case merely because they don't care to give us a quality product. But Funimation knows better--It makes me wonder if Toho made it really difficult to secure anything considering how well received Shin is.

The next event featured was a screening on August 15th at the Shinjuku Baltic 9, where the audience was encouraged to interact verbally with the film. Given some sort of lanterns, they enthusiastically played with, and  reacted to, the action onscreen. The scene where the member of Team Yaguchi goes nuts about the radiation readings was loved by the audience, who, by this time, were a crowd. Prior to the screening, the audience was warmed up by some personality/master of ceremonies, who got them in the mood to have fun with the film. And they did.

After the screening, the personality returned, obviously worked up by the film. And then, Hideaki Anno comes on stage, and the audience goes nuts! By this time, they're on their feet: "Anno! Anno! Anno!" The director is clearly in his element here, relaxed, joking with the master of ceremonies, clearly enjoying being with this audience.

At the end of this feature, the audience, as a group, do their best (?) impression of Godzilla with their hands turned up, shouting in unison, with Anno in the midst of them.

This was one of the best features, seeing this audience having so much fun, and being able to show their appreciation to the person whose vision directed this great film.

The next event featured was the red carpet premiere on July 25th 2016, in Shinjuku.

This is one of the better features just because of the fan enthusiasm, and the pure joy one could see them experiencing as the stars of the film came out to meet and greet and sign autographs. The aerial views of the red carpet, which I understand was 118.5 meters long, or as long as Godzilla was tall in the film, were breathtaking.

The next day Hiroki Hasegawa and Satomi Ishihara were on some kind of barge at an event in Osaka. This is great stuff, watching the run up to the theatrical run.

On July 29th, Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenochi, Satomi Ishihara, Kengo Kora and Co-Director/VFX Director Shinji Higuchi appeared at the film's opening at the Toho Cinema's theater in Roppongi Hills. Besides the actual screening of the film, the highlight of this event had to be the appearance on screen of the man who played Godzilla by way of motion capture, Mansai Nomura. He was very animated and charismatic.

My goal is to watch Shin Godzilla enough so that I can watch the Toho release and still follow the story.

I'm working on it.

I remember that in one of the previews of the FUNimation release that the subtitles were yellow and the location and officials' titles were in quotation marks. I thought this was pretty cool. But, I'm happy with the final product, subtitle and font-wise.

Right now I'm looking at an event that took place on July 19, 2016. It features Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi, Satomi Ishihara, Hideaki Anno and a producer, I think. It's some kind of panel discussion, and they look exhausted.

If I ever star in a Toho-produced film, I'm going to take a lot of vitamins.

I'm going to start with Disc Two, which has the trailers and TV spots, especially that first main trailer released on April 13th 2016, a beautiful 93 seconds that majestically fills the screen graced by Shiro Sagiso's elegant and moving "Persecution of the Masses."

After the trailers which are repeated several times (perhaps so that we can memorize some of the details in the shots), you get the various promotional events, special appearances at screenings, etc.

In honor of the release by FUNimation of their Shin Godzilla Blu-ray/DVD, I'm going to celebrate this by watching the extra features on the Toho 3-disc Blu-ray.

Thank God Almighty that we share a Blu-ray region with Japan.

Instead of the Nerds Interview, that 34 minutes could have been devoted to something that actually had entertainment value, like:

1. 5 minutes of trailers/TV spots

2. 30 minutes of outtakes/making of/behind the scenes/Previz/VFX and some premiere footage.

I would buy this, if available, God willing.

I have the 3-disc set from Toho as well, and with about 333 minutes of extras, there's plenty to watch. But, for some people, the FUNimation release is going to be 'it.' And there's a basic principle here: a release of this stature, with this level of critical acclaim and commercial success, deserves much better than "Godzilla vs. The Nerds." At the very least, include trailers and ending credits. And lose the interview with the employees. But, optimally, some behind-the-scenes/making of features, featuring VFX/SFX techniques would be most appropriate for a film of the status of Shin Godzilla. A reviewer over at Amazon described FUNimation's effort as "lazy."

Not too far off the mark.

I guess I'm not that burnt by it since I have the Japanese special features through the Japanese release. If those features were to be released with English subs, however, I would gladly triple-dip.

Dear FUNimation:

"If you chose to re-issue this seminal Godzilla film, Shin Godzilla, you may want to consider giving it at least the treatment afforded Attack On Titan: Japanese and US Trailers and translated Ending Credits. I do not understand why your present release of this film does not even have a trailer for the film itself? Why would a feature like this be omitted? This was one of the most anticipated Godzilla films in the history of the Series. Shin Godzilla was a massive critical and commercial success in Japan. And you, very admirably, distributed it in theaters last fall. This was a great treat for fans. But this Blu-ray/DVD release is disappointing. It looks and sounds great. But, in terms of features meant to enhance the enjoyment of the film itself, it falls short."

"I don't know if anything can be done. I would imagine (and hope) that Shin Godzilla will do well in this release. But, as a film and entry in this iconic series, it deserves better."

I love the dvd release of this movie. I love the alternate endings they have featured with them. Honestly I wish they kept the alternate ending with Frankenstein fighting that giant octopus. mainly because it would make sense in the opening scene of War of The Gargantuas, Gaira is fighting a giant octopus.

i love old horror movies featuring Frankenstein, and the opening scene with the test tubes and the mad scientist really bring that fandom of mine home with it.
