^Not true. The books being canon are wildly in dispute at best, contradictory at worst.
Everyone seems to forget that Shin goes catatonic whenever he uses his atomic breath. Plus in the movie, and comic it's extremely well known that Legendary Pictures Godzilla tanked 15 Megaton Hydrogen Bomb called Castle Bravo. Let's not pretend that's the same as Bunker Buster Bombs.
Plus Shin needs radiation to even function. All Legendary Godzilla needs to do is be near Shin Godzilla, and he would get stronger from all the radiation that leaks out of Shin. I mean It's been established that Legendary gets his radiation from thermal vents from the earths core. He was built to absorb radiation. Shin would go catatonic way faster before he would even notice he was losing radiation, or even be aware that there's a threat in the area, because he isn't to bright. He only reacts when his in danger. That's the same as a frog in boiling water. I love the comment that Shin destroyed a entire city. Big deal. .. Shin also took a two week recharge period. Legendary Godzilla chased the MUTO'S for days while dealing with the military, and fighting the male on several occasions. Later fought both male, and female for a entire day before collapsing after beating them. You seriously can't compare that. Especially when Legendary could destroy a entire city without needing a rest period. Granted it wouldn't be as fast. It still wouldn't matter because the human race wouldn't be able to do a thing. Unlike Shin who lost to humans.
Plus the parasitic MUTO's have whipped out the Godzilla species. Not a easy thing to do I imagine. You guy's give way to little credit to a monster that evolved to kill the King of the Monsters.
And yes the books are canon. You can literally see all the interviews that basically confirme this, and the film Kong Skull Island using some of the stuff in Awakening. Plus General Macarthur is a character from the graphic novel. He was added to the Monarch Timeline... That alone should tell you how much Awakening is the official prequel to the 2014 Godzilla.
Godzilla 1989/1991 has the best roar of any Godzilla
@Huge-Ben some bomb ass shit from Cali haha. The miniatures were better I'll give you that but in terms of suits and atomic breath showa loses.
@Trapzilla,
Showa had the worst special effects? What weed you smokin'? More blatant disrespect to Eiji Tsuburaya the master of monsters and tokusatsu.
Anyway, The Gamera trilogy, Pacrim, and Shin Godzilla are the best Kaiju films to date.
Kong skull island>Godzilla 2014.
Everyone seems to be forgetting Shin Godzilla's rapid colonization. Even if Shin is blown to pieces, those pieces each can regenerate into a whole new Godzilla. 50/50? I think not.
Wow this is really great. I think that they should enter new kaiju to the monsterverse as a cameo instead of rodan such as...
you know what, I really can't think of any others that everyone knows. I was thinking gamera but like thats ever gonna happen
"Not saying Shin would win, but this is much closer to a 50/50 fight than some are pretending."
Pretty much this.
^Given my Gamera 3 comment, I can largely agree with this sentiment.
Pacific Rim is the best Kaiju movie in the last 17 years.
Not really Godzilla, but relates to Godzilla movies so guess I'll add it.
I grew up with the Heisei series and honestly Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992) and Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah are in my Top 5 movies of the entire Godzilla franchise.
I also want to make this clear. I love the Legendary Godzilla, Im very excited to see the sequels. He is a force to be reckoned with. Just stating what I saw in both films as terms of power and ability. Legendary is a like a football player, he can move and run you over. While Shin is like the Bruce Lee of Godzilla's, he doesn't need to hit you with his whole body to hurt you and take you out. Shin only needs one good shot at you with any of its abilities and then your out. I know somebody is going to call me out on the Bruce Lee comment. Im just trying to make this humorous, calm down.
These posts seem to paint legendary as this unstoppable monster, let's clear something up Awakening is still heavily disputed as to how "canon" it is. If this Godzilla was feet away from a meteor that wiped out basically all life on earth then he should have had a walk in the park going through the military, and mutos. A building by any stretch of the imagination would be hardly felt. Also the movie specifically has a line saying he got attacked by kiloton nukes. A specific line they go out of their way to establish within this universe solely for the reason of specifying the bombs were never megaton.
Not saying Shin would win, but this is much closer to a 50/50 fight than some are pretending.
oh, so that pretty much ends this topic. So it is canon with the series.
^yet he faints like a grandmother drunk off of schnapps after a building falls on him and again after defeating the female MUTO. for many hours.
Shin destroyed an entire city in seconds and pierced through buildings like butter.
Shin Gojira is at least(to our knowledge) 60 years old and was able to evolve very quickly to do what he did. Legendary is around for millions of years and could barley keep up with the MUTO's. His atomic ray at first put the Female Muto into a power nap, then killed her. Shin straight up incinerated an entire city in less than 60 seconds. If shin fought the Muto's he could have taken them both out in one attack. It took Legendary an entire day to combat just the male MUTO, that was 150 ft less than him(not to mention the weight Godzilla has on the male MUTO)! He had size and that precious atomic ray to use on it and still took him all day to take it out.
As for the radiation leak, Legendary doesn't have the time like he had with the MUTO's to absorb anything from Shin. SHin can blast legendary from a mile away and slice him up before Legendary gets to take a look at him. Shin is built for quick disposal, unlike his American counter part.
Godzilla 2000 is my favorite design, Legendary Godzilla is my second, and Godzilla 1991 comes in 3rd.
The Heisei films are great, minus GvSG, GvMothra, and GvMG.
The showa films had the best stories of the entire series, but also the worst special effects
Godzilla is way cooler as a bad guy
GvMG 1974 is the best film of the whole series
akira ifukubes scores should be played or used as source material in the Monsterverse movies
If Bryan Cranston would have made it to the end of Godzilla 2014, the movie would have made 600 milion plus at the box office
Also still think Legendary screwed up by killing him off, he should be on the head of Monarch operations working with Serizawa for GKOTM
The introduction to the skullcrawlers in Kong was god awful. We get John C reily narrating their appearance with no element of suprise or suspense whatsoever.
The last fight Scene where Kong is chained up by the boats is so unrealistic. You literally have to turn your brain off to watch it. There is no way those people aren't killed by the skullcrawler while Kong is tied up for that long. It's like where you see if you can hold your breath for as long as someone is in the movie. Just count how many seconds Kong is tied up and you'll know what I mean.
Legendary Godzilla needs bigger teeth and more powerful atomic breath.
Godzilla should never faint for longer than a few minutes, that was ridiculous. He kicks ass and he leaves, he doesn't faint.
"That Gamera heisei series is pretty sweet and I would argue it is better in more than just special FX."
Agreed. In fact I don't think a single kaiju movie has topped Gamera 3: The Revenge of Irys since its release. (Another likely unpopular opinion--If I haven't stated it before.)
My unpopular opinion. Even though Planet of Monsters comes out this year, I'm more excited for King of the Monsters.
For me its a draw, Kong swam and Godzilla got lazy to fight back.
^ According to these. Yeah it is, also there's multiple interviews that say it is. Plus the movie Kong Skull Island using the date when Monarch was established from the graphic novel and not the 2014 Godzilla film is further evidence. There's other things to consider as well. The post credit scene in Kong Skull Island reveals that Godzilla has awaken throughout earths history, just like what the graphic novel says, and more recently the monarch timeline includes General Macarthur. A character from the graphic novel.
Some of the inconsistencies from Awakening & 2014 film can be solved by simply remembering that Monarch is a secret organization that won't reveal the entire truth about Giant Monsters owning this earth. What they told to Ford was a cover story that simply only involved the Monsters in question, and keep everything else under wraps. Especially when you take a look at there timeline. They have been keeping track of MUTO'S throughout the years, and even contain some.

PS. Dr Serizawa age means nothing. Especially when the actual actor is 57. He can totally play someone who is 69 in the 2014 film. That's just a couple of years. Hell the pocket watch that he talks about in the film is present in the graphic novel. On another note the kilotons vs megatons was obvious a mistake that slipped through the crack. It happens all the time in movies.
Legendary Godzilla tanks multiple megaton nukes in his background stories. The 2014 movie's opening sequence depicts the Castle Bravo detonation which was a 50 megaton nuclear bomb. For comparison, a 1 megaton nuclear bomb's gamma rays would vaporize humans (leaving "ghost shadows" on the ground) within a 16 square kilometer radius and be followed by a pressure wave that induces bleeding from every orifice. That's not to mention possible resulting "firestorms," the ensuing gale force winds, and high temperatures. Nuclear detonations reach temperatures of over 100 million degrees Celsius; forget the surface of the sun, that's multiple times hotter than the core of the sun (this is because the fission rate of a detonation is instantaneous compared to the sun's prolonged core fission, leading to hotter temperatures), which is only 15 million degrees Celcius. To withstand a nuclear explosion at its epicenter is an impossibly mind staggering durability feat, let alone multiple detonations.
But wait! There's more. Following 2014 lore, Godzilla: Awakening depicts Legendary Godzilla in the impact vicinity of an asteroid that collided with Earth, in an event that is suggested to be the precursor to the age of the dinosaurs, known as the PT extinction. The PT extinction rate is estimated to be in the ballpark of 90% of all species on Earth. In comparison, the KT extinction that killed off the dinosaurs had an extinction rate of 70% of all species on Earth; this may be relevant because the KT extinction was very likely to have been caused by an asteroid around 10 kilometers in diameter. Such an asteroid would have a blast yield of... wait for it... 100 million megatons!
Shin Godzilla, on the other hand, was heavily injured by two GBU-57 MOPs (Massive Ordnance Penetrator) to the extent that he had to utilize active countermeasure defenses (the laser defenses) to avoid being hit again. While GBU-57s are massive (14,000 kg), they are still conventional weapons and their blast yields are nowhere near comparable to those that Legendary Godzilla has tanked (repeatedly). But why would Legendary Godzilla display reactions to conventional weaponry while Shin Godzilla doesn't flinch (aside from the MOPs)? We know that Legendary Godzilla has literally walked away from nuclear blasts, so what is the meaning of him showing pain when he is hit in the gills despite his healing ability and durability? Simply put, pain is one way the nervous system communicates outside influences; it's a survival mechanic. Therefore, it is possible that these conventional attacks don't actually have any significant physical effect on Legendary Godzilla (how could they in the face of the nuke feat?) aside from sending neurological messages of attempted assaults on the body, aka "pain." Shin Godzilla, on the other hand, is covered in scarring. If nerve function isn't functioning properly, there may be no indication to him that he's sustaining damage. As for a fight, there are benefits and disadvantages to either side of being able or unable to process pain; Legendary Godzilla will process pain and act accordingly while Shin Godzilla might not notice damage until the point where his life is in jeopardy. In the end, I give the durability edge to Legendary Godzilla by far, for the nuke feat.
Regarding Legendary Godzillas heat ray, remember that the FEMMUTO has an organic EMP defense system evolved specifically to suppress and disable the Godzilla species's heat ray (this is stated in the novelization of the movie and the sphere of influence is shown in the movie). Despite the FEMMUTO's kryptonitesque hindrance, Legendary Godzilla was still able to summon forth his heat ray on two occasions while near the FEMMUTO. This is not only an extraordinarily impressive biological feat, but also suggests Legendary Godzilla is actually capable of producing a far more powerful heat ray, perhaps by many orders of magnitude.
Lastly Shin Godzilla has thermal vents to stabilize his radiation output, because of this he contaminates everywhere he goes. That helps Legendary Godzilla considerably because he gets stronger just by being near Shin Godzilla. Plus those vents gives Legendary Godzilla easy access to Shin's atomic energy making Shin weaker and go catatonic faster. Legendary is very good at absorbing radiation. He lives at the bottom of the ocean absorbing radiation from the earths core through the thermal vents of the ocean floor. Shin Godzilla to him is nothing but a buffet of never ending nuclear energy. Plus the ocean floor is one of the most pressurized place on earth. You can add that to Legendary Godzilla durability scale. I mean he lives at the bottom of the ocean.
^ All that spells Shin's defeat. Before anyone says the books aren't canon. There's multiple interviews saying that it is. Plus Kong Skull Island using the date when Monarch was established from the book, and the post credit scene showing Godzilla waking up throughout earths history, basically saying what the graphic novel told us, and even now with the inclusion of General Macarthur in the Monarch Timeline is enough evidence.
That Gamera heisei series is pretty sweet and I would argue it is better in more than just special FX.
Is that a satellite image of a big body of water near the shore or a picture of the sky?
its crazy when you watch something for years and think its all connected. For example, I believed that Godzilla 2000 through Megaguirus (SKIPPING GMK) and GAM and SOS were all connected. The same Godzilla. Since they all take place in similar years. Now I know other wise. Mind=Blown
Another interesting side note: the recent book Shin Godzilla Walker, which covers a great deal of the franchise including Shin Godzilla, has some interesting details regarding the continuity. First of all, it provides years of construction for most of the JSDF weaponry, which often correspond to the films they are featured in. It says the weapons featured in Destroy All Monsters were all built in 1990, with the weapons of the 1970's films all built in the 1970's, further reinforcing Destroy All Monsters' being set chronologically last in the Showa series.
Most intriguingly, it actually gives a rundown of the continuity through a chart. It demonstrates that all the Showa films comprise a single continuity, while all the Heisei films plus Godzilla (1954) comprise their own continuity. It shows that each individual Millennium film is a sequel to Godzilla (1954), with the exception of Godzilla: Final Wars, which is shown to be standalone. It also places both American Godzilla films as standalone. You can take a look at this chart courtesy of this scan from Toho Kingdom.
The Gamera heisei series is better that the Godzilla Heisei series with special FX.
The Return of Godzilla and Shin Gojira are the best in the entire series!
^ I don't see anything, but a white smudge. What do you think it is?
did anyone notice this during the Kong skull island opening credits?
Legendary Godzilla got knocked down by a building. Shin took several buildings plus the trains plus the coagulant. Even if shin is cooling down and standing still, he can still attack and not even need to move. If one of those beams hits Legendary G, it will slice him up. Shin is deadly in a 360 degree danger zone. He can attack above as well as below, behind and in front effectively. Plus Shin evolves with every attack.
I always thought that "Awakening" gave fans a fun introduction with Monarch and the relationship with Godzilla. I felt as though we kind of see Serizawa's origins in contrast with the beginning of Monarch.
^Why do you think he won? Could you please elaborate?
^ Found this awhile back. There's a event that they noticed that I think should definitely be in the MonsterVerse Monarch Timeline.

^ I think it's time for a update for the MonsterVerse Monarch Timeline, courtesy of username twospirits.
I wonder about the others that can't be read are. 1944 two years before Monarch was founded and 2013 right before the events of the 2014 movie.
1954- Monarch Goes Global
As the age of the atom bomb dawns, Monarch, a multinational coalition of scientists leading covert missions to understanding of M.U.T.O.S. authorized unofficially and overseen by General Macarthur, ( ) flotilla under the guise of "Nuclear ( ) weapons across the Bikini Atoll in they were not test. They were trying to kill it.
General Macarthur being included in the MonsterVerse officially includes Godzilla Awakening as canon. Especially when they use 1946 as the start of Monarch like the book says and now Skull Island movie. Plus the idea that Godzilla has awaken throughout the years like the book says and end credit scene in Skull Island.
I am going with what the film makers wanted it to be, a Kong victory. Godzilla was originally made because the film makers were fans and respected King Kong. If the original Kong and the original Godzilla fought of course the much bigger and stronger Godzilla most likely would have won, but that is boring. They wanted to tell a story so that story was up to them.
