If they were to get the rights to Toho monsters, I’d love to see Anguirus, Manda, and Mechagodzilla. But original monsters are cool as well.

Gotta agree with the majority here, KnifeHead is also my favorite. Otachi does come in second though. Very Rodan-esque but still original enough. With Pacific Rim, it was hands down the most fun I've had watching a monster movie in theatres since Godzilla 2000(first g movie I ever saw in a theatre). If you weren't a Godzilla fan, it would've been pretty easy to fall asleep watching the 2014 movie

You know, upon reexamining this, I can't help but be reminded of Disney acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

I know it's in no way similar, but it just reminds me of that. More specifically, the memes that arose, like how Mickey Mouse is basically Thanos with the completed Infinity Gauntlet.

Maybe someday, the House of the Mouse will buy out the kingdom of the King of the Monsters :P

Ah ok, well I'm sure Toho can still do their own stuff, think of it like Sony developing Spider-Man spin-offs that have nothing to do with MCU Spider-Man and definitely nobody asks for.

The Bootleg Rebellious,
No. Toho merely "leases" the rights to Legendary for them to make their own Godzilla movie. They've never co-funded a production. In the past Legendary has bought the rights from Toho and Toho has given them a playbook of the "do and do nots" with the Godzilla character. Now, if the MonsterVerse continues with Godzilla (and this is not confirmation that it will) Toho will fund 25% of each movie that has their property in it. Meaning they will get more money in box office returns and have even more specific creative control of each film.

Personally I'm not sure if I like this. The MonsterVerse has been a fun distraction from the prime series, but I'd rather Toho focus more on their own films. This does not guarantee they will.

Wait what? I thought they've been doing this since 2014? You know what? It doesn't matter, hopefully this means MonsterVerse will continue to thrive.

This is an interesting move by Toho.  If my assumption is correct, it may serve as an excellent alternative to licensing their properties proper, which is a double edged sword.  Here's what I mean: last year, "Shin Godzilla" director Shinji Higuchi said that no sequel to the Japanese-produced film, nor any other live action film, could be made by Toho until after 2020, when their deal with Legendary expires.  (This is why the next two Monsterverse movies are coming out so close together.)

Now, if I'm understanding this right, this new co-producing deal would enable Toho to both produce more Hollywood adaptations of their work AND create their own live action films at the same time.  This is good news for fans; after 2020, it may not have to be a case of "one or the other".  Legendary can continue using Godzilla and other Toho monsters in further installments of the Monsterverse, and Toho themselves could pursue a sequel to "Shin Godzilla" or other live action films.

It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out!

Oh man, I sure hope it means Godzilla gets to stick around for the Monsterverse.

Don't get me wrong, I like that Toho is going with experimentation with the character/brand back home, but I'd prefer if we have a stable monster franchise in the global public eye. Transformers and comic book movies have theirs, and the Monsterverse is the only chance for monsters to have theirs.

Interesting. Perhaps this could clear up licensing issues for movies in the future as well?

MinecraftDinoKaiju,
Completely agree. Slattern was a little too over-designed and muddled looking to remember for my money. Knifehead was simpler, but very effective.

Same here. He even looks better than Slattern, and we only saw him for a few scenes (or minutes, I'm not sure which).

Agreed again. Knifehead had a lot of Showa series influence to him and immediately stood out compared to even the other kaiju in Pacific Rim. He had a great, bulky silhouette, imposing head design and actually looked like something that would tear those jaegers in two--And it nearly did! The opening fight sequence was incredibly suspenseful.

I'll take Knifehead any day over MUTO or Skullcrawlers. No contest at all.

Knifehead reminds me a lot of Guiron from Gamera fame. I like that monster most out of the whole showa series of gamera. Until Iris came around.

Knifehead?, I mean he's not bad but his design honestly didn't "wow" me, probably because he was a quickly thrown away.

^KNIFEHEAD FOR PRESIDENT!

haha, but I sincerely hope Dougherty takes a page or 2 from del Toro, instead of anything Edwards did for the franchise. Don't get me wrong Edwards can be an ok director. I watched his movie Monsters and I thought it was pretty good. Not close to a favorite, but it was ok. But with Godzilla I thought, "Well they cant screw this up all that bad can they?", I was disappointed and let down. Honestly, before we all the saw the movie and the teaser trailers were out, I thought the images in the trailer and the story and the way it was portraying Godzilla was better than the actual movie. Silly right?

Point being is that Pacific Rim is great both with story and design, and for a franchise to mimic another franchise and do it better is amazing! Legendary Godzilla has a lot to live up to more than ever. If Godzilla were to be the only franchise featuring kaiju running right now, maybe I wouldn't be so picky, Pacific Rim set the bar higher for me. Lets hope 2019 brings in a great monster movie.

Fingers crossed for 2019 and 2020.

riggzamortis86,
Massively agree. Pacific Rim's kaiju designs aren't the best designs ever, but they're leaps and bounds better than the MUTO and Skullcrawlers. In an interview del Toro explained that the philosophy to designing them was to create them in a way that could also be brought to life through suitmation. The design team found that the philosophy expanded they're creativity, rather than limit it, because they were able to bring to life fuller, bulkier creatures that Hollywood usually steers away from.

Knifehead is probably my favorite new kaiju since Iris.

I think we will get an extra scene after the credits of KOTM, like K:SI I can guess that after the ending credits there will be a scene that somehow includes Kong and the possibility of other monsters that Monarch must deal with. then end scene.

riggzamortis86Godzilla ForumMonsterVerse Monsters: Who do you want?

I think Pacific Rim kaijus represent the best reimagined classic kaijus of the 2 franchises. The mix and match of the monsters strikes a great chord with me. What del Toro did was amazing, I only wish this carried on into the Legendary Godzilla movie. That movie made me an anti-Edwards fan.

I just hope Dougherty can deliver a great movie and design into the monsters he is directing. I think KOTM will bring this Monsterverse into a great new light!

Tbh tho, Pacific Rim Monsters(NOT ALL OF THEM) never honestly "wow" me, well yes sure some of them do look somewhat original but some of them also look somewhat generic or a mix both.

That I can agree with. If Toho takes the charge with making new monsters and the Monsterverse does get stuck with the old favorites, I'd be mostly satisfied. I think if we do get a sequel to Shin Godzilla, we could get the best original monster since Biollante.

Reply
G. H. (Gman)Godzilla ForumMonsterVerse Monsters: Who do you want?

Pacific Rim has far more satisfying original monsters. If future Monsterverse movies are made and they go the original monster route, they need to consult del Toro and his design team--Not necessarily to create carbon copies, but to find a better philosophy for designing these things.

On the flip side, I'm far more interested in original monsters from Toho. I think Shin Godzilla could potentially set itself up for interesting original creations--And Higuchi hires far better designers than the team Edwards and Vogt-Roberts pulled in.

That would kinda steal Pacific Rim's thunder tho, maybe is just me.

Edit: Although If Legendary wanted to introduce mechs in the MonsterVerse then I want them to introduce Jet Jaguar for very stupid reason that I won't go over.

I know. My little sister typed that in, sorry. But anyway, I think that if the Monsterverse is going to have any new monsters in it, they should make original mechanical monsters. They were doing something similar in Pacific Rim, so it doesn't seem crazy to do the same thing for the Monsterverse. Who agrees with me?

Gman,

I can see where you're coming from as well. I agree that most of the creatures thus far have been underwhelming, but that's why I felt that of the Millennium and Heisei movies were retreads.

I think part of the reason is that we've had some of these classic monsters for decades. I'd imagine if Godzilla 2014 was your first Godzilla movie, the MUTOs would seem pretty darn cool. It's hard to get excited for new things when they aren't reminiscent of what came before. I think Legendary also put themselves in a box by describing the creatures in the Monsterverse as naturally occurring. Sure they could work their way out (aliens, mutants, etc.) of it if that's where the money is, but I don't most audiences would as readily accept it as most Godzilla would. There's no Guardians of the Galaxy to bridge that gap in the Monsterverse.

I don't think Legendary would do something like that tho but it would be cool if they did.

The Legend of Brian,
I can appreciate that sentiment, certainly, but when the new stuff is so incredibly underwhelming compared to the tried and true you lose hope after awhile. There's a reason Mothra and King Ghidorah returned after Orga and Megaguirus--Both of which rank among some of the most forgettable monsters in the series... Next to the MUTO, really.

I thought the Skullcrawlers were okay, to be fair, but completely unremarkable--And that's a problem. If these things don't wow me or look like something worthy of Godzilla's (or Kong's) attention I begin wondering why they even bothered at all--It's too underwhelming. Conversely, perhaps underwhelming is what was needed for Godzilla's first film in this series. I suppose they need not upstage him in a more proper return to Hollywood. Still, pairing him with the MUTO was like sitting Christopher Plummer next to Hayden Christensen in a Shakespearean drama. Only one is going to benefit from that and be interesting.

If Legendary can surprise us with some really neat, memorable creatures then I'm all for it. They were beating around the bush with Pacific Rim, but the Monsterverse in nowhere near the mainland and I simply can't get excited about the prospect of new creatures from them.

TrapZillaGodzilla ForumMonsterVerse Monsters: Who do you want?

I'm really hoping we get a solo Mothra movie, with or without Battra. I think it'd be the one movie in the MonsterVerse that is kind of "out there" I like to picture it as Kong Skull Island meets Avatar. Mothra could also help to appeal to the female audience as well, in a genre that pretty much only men watch.

Reply
The Legend of Brian Godzilla ForumMonsterVerse Monsters: Who do you want?

While I agree with the sentiment @Gman, I'd rather see the Monsterverse make new monsters that don't necessarily become classics then see rehashes of the old favorites. It'd be fun to see an original Monsterverse creature make their way to a Toho film actually.

I've always been partial to seeing new things than getting the same old stuff again and again, especially if new and/or interesting things aren't attempted.
